It would have my house on the fact that McVeigh will retire at the end of the season. That frees up at least $500K. Split that between Jones and Reid on top of what they are getting now and the job should get done.

    - - - Updated - - -

Listening to all the chatter going on about player movements just confirms to me that player managers are all about churning players for a commission.

Would have thought the club had already factored in McVeighs career coming to an end when re signing Mills and Heeney so reckon that money is already spent - i still can believe K Jack was signed last year till 2019 - now that is future money that could of been better spent given his health and form over the last season and this season so far.

        Hellooooo, anybody listening?

The new EBA is delivering more than a million dollars over and above what clubs were told to budget for. I can't see a well run club like ours not being able to re-sign required players to sensibly priced new contracts. McVeigh, given his ongoing history with old man soft tissue injuries is a likely retirement or a very much reduced one year contract freeing up more money.

Only if players like Reid and Jones are offered silly money by Melbourne clubs would we be likely to not match, in which case Reid would attract a Band 1 compo draft pick but can't see how a Melb club gets a Jones deal done.

Both to stay IMO. Think all this talk is media and manager driven.

Rather than worry about who might leave to big offers, surely we are overdue to bring in a big budget player. Mitchel gave us some cap room. A few retirements at seasons end (mcveigh) and extra $1m. Time to go for a big target. The question is, what sort of player do we need

The only way we have cap room is if Jones and Reid depart at seasons end, if they stay we'll still be bulging and wont be bringing in a big name

                How can that be ?

Interesting to see GWS sniffing around Dusty Martin. You'd think their cap would be pretty full. Maybe prepared to offload a player or two.

I don't think it's so much a matter of whether we have enough salary cap to sign Reid and Jones, but rather if we want to break the pay scale that has probably been in place with the signings of JPK, Parker, Hanners, Mills and Heeney. We can't really pay Jones more than these guys and Jones should feel satisfied with a long term offer that's around the same that was given to Heeney.

Tippett's remaining year on this big contract should not cause a problem in signing any players. After next year we should gain some extra cap space regardless of what happens with Tippett. It's understandable that people are upset with Tippett's injuries and inconsistent form (usually associated with an injury), but when he's in form, he's a very good player.

Maybe if we lose either Reid or Jones we should go after Steven May. He can play both forward and back. But I think other clubs would be willing to pay more for him than we would.

Collingwood has committed too much to Wells and Mayne to be in the market for a big name signing.

Melbourne have too many young stars who will be demanding big pay packs in the coming years, although Steven May could be a target for them.

Richmond would be desperate for another key forward like Sam Reid and even though they will have to put a lot on the table to keep Dusty, should still have enough for another player. But I think Sam is staying.

North and STK are the teams that have the most salary cap to land a big fish or even 2. Neither has to worry about signing star players already on their list and must have lots of cap space. It seems like the main targets are Martin, Kelly and Fyfe. I'm not sure how much they would be willing to offer to someone a notch down from these players, such as Zak Jones.

I'm sure we can be outbid if money is the only issue, but we will have to hope that a good working environment, premiership prospects and player loyalty will be enough to keep our current players.

I would personally dive Reid to Melbourne, if it freed up the cap to land Fyfe

Fyfe is a surfer. Think about it.

Jones and reid could get alot more elsewhere as could everyone else who signed
I wouldn't be breaking a pay cycle to hold them they should fit within the others
For jones to be 3/4 of Kennedy yr 1 of a new deal would be a disgrace

Am i reading most posts wrongfully.

If we lose this player we should get that player.

My view is that if we lose Reid and/or Jones it is just about money and that means we can't bring in any other GOOD player.

Maybe players like Kennedy, Mattner, Richards, Bolton are available and will develop in the Swans system.

We have spent a ton of money in Parker, Hannebery, Heeney, JPK, Mills and can only offer $???.

Saints, Norf and others might just spin the chocolate wheel and offer whatever $$ the wheel finishes with. These clubs might be willing to pay overs and maybe even way overs to bring in ready made players.

Reid has a premiership. Jones hasn't.

Unfortunately it might be like a last man standing situation. However signs first means the other one is gone.

Both would be great but I just can't see it.

The Swans List Manager is just waiting to add the final $$ per year for the player wage spreadsheet before their last offers are made.

                        Until then, please standby ????

That just goes to show how much of this speculation is rubbish. Didn't Dusty have a tour of GWS last time he was out of contract and the Giants said they wouldn't touch him with a barge pole. I can't imagine they have any interest.

I think we just have to trust the club to do all they can to re-sign these guys without jeopardising the salary structure and our future salary cap space.

If there are silly offers being bandied about by desperate clubs (i.e. North Melbourne, what a scummy outfit they are) then we just will have to let the guys go and go to the draft. Unlike Mitchell these losses will hurt us but I just have a feeling we will keep whoever signs first and lose the second.

IF we were to lose both, which would be a short term body blow, then surely we'd also have a huge hole in our cap - I'd suggest we take our three first rounders, sign up a few required players on front ended deals and put together our own war chest for 2019 after Tippet comes off contract. Of course if we dare sign a player another club wants there will be squealing from all parties and the Academy will be irrationally targeted.

For some reason I'm quite philosophical about how this plays out. I fully expect we will put fair offers above Reid and Jones (unlike what we did with Mitchell) and whether that is enough is really just totally out of our control. These are crazy times but it will settle down in a year or so and I expect us, as always, to play the long game.

I personally don't think we'll go for players from outside the club if we lose out on these guys. I'd suspect we'll just re-focus on developing our list internally and possibly signing up a raft of players to extended deal - Melican, Newman, Aliir, Florent, Maubain and Cameron all have good long term futures at the club and the money saved could front load some new deals there.

I don't expect us to be active until the external market until Tippet's deal expires
