Glad I dropped into this excellent Trading, Drafting, List Management thread, it so full of ....... well it's not full of trading, drafting, list management, it's full of posts about positives and negatives of current going no where players!

Can we move this stuff into another thread and just use this thread for it's titled purpose? Please.

On the AFL site they have the indicative draft order with us at 13 with draft points 1212. Can some one explain how it works if we nominate Nick Blakey as an Academy pick.

It means that you've gone into a coma and woken up in 2018.

That spring afternoon remains dead to me for 2006, 2014 and 2016. Though I didn't hate 2006 as much as 2016 and 2014 was beyond awful.
2016 has to be the worst of those. In 2006 we were just plain unlucky. In 2014 we turned up with the wrong attitude. In 2016 we would have won the premiership had it not been for the incompetent and/or corrupt performance by the umpires/AFL. We were robbed, and it feels like we have been violated, almost like being the victim of a crime.

Attitude? We got beaten up. We got outsmarted and outcoached. We were too slow. They've made a lot of changes since then to address this.
2016. Can't blame the umps for losing a game we should have won. We, similar to GWS, couldn't compete with the Doggies inside game, then rapid spread. Hence why we were happy to move on Mitchell for Florent.. a player who can go inside but then spread with lightning pace.

Hayward is out of his depth at the moment (as shown the last 2 weeks) and shouldn't be playing finals, but is super talented and will grow in to the role Rohan plays.

I'd be trading Rohan, as he has real currency, and looking to get a pick or younger player who can add speed to our half back line.

We may be playing our hand a bit early. I would prefer if the club didnt telegraph it this far out.

As pointed out you've gone a bit early but I'll show you so that way you don't have to ask the same question next year. If the same scenario happened next year if he was nominated by a Club at pick nine or higher we'd only have to use our first round pick but if nominated lower at say pick 6 we'd have to make the points difference up using our next pick. Personally I think he's in the 6-10 range ATM but this will change as next year progresses I'd expect. He's not the standout in his draft year that a lot of Sydney supporters think. He'll be good but he's no Lukosius or Rankine. Here's an article for next years draft

Here's a clip for the 2019 draft. Jackson Barling from the Sydney academy has his name as a possible higher end draftee. Good clip. Presented by Terry Wallace but he wouldn't have done the leg work.

Small sentence about Barling from the championship

The coming 12 months call for some astute forward planning from our list managers. With our excellent age profile it's hard to point to anyone in our best 22 (indeed best 30) who is going to leave the club this season except for Macca, and even he may get another season. Down the track Grundy, Kizza, Joey, Smooch, Laids will go out the door but with the exception of Laids and Reg none of them are likely to go this year or next. So how do the promising talent in the 2s get their opportunities? Consider the talent not currently best 22 (Dawson, Florent, Aliir, Swampy, Harry) and then the next tier below them (Cameron, Murray, Fisher, O'Riordan etc.) and then add whoever comes in over the off season. Maybe we do need to start thinking about trading some of our older fringe/depth players to create opportunities for the talent below. How patient will our youth be? Maybe they'll surprise us. Hawthorn's youth were pretty patient. But they were aiming at a 4-peat until this season.

I'd be very reluctant to trade Gazza. What would be the point? He's got what we'd be looking for to replace him. He's pretty well the fastest player in the comp, can take high marks and is a long kick. He applies amazing defensive pressure and brings people to the footy. However, he would have currency. Towers is definitely worth considering for trade if there are any suitors. At least we are fattening him for market by playing him in the 1s. Who else? The best 22 players we'd most consider letting go (looking at you, Tippett) are not going anywhere anytime soon.

It's a good problem to have. We have a relatively settled, young team with plenty of depth. What more can you ask for? (Perhaps some more really top shelf key position talent - but that's just greedy (and expensive.))

                      +1

I would be more than happy to trade Towers and Tippo, but someone needs to be willing to accommodate them in a fair deal (for the players and both clubs).

I would be reluctant to trade Gazza for the reasons you've just highlighted. He is an excitement machine and I feel he's just starting to string some consistency together.

                        Towers had no currency.
Tippo, to the right buyer. Eg. Richmond of the fail this year and it's blamed on small forward line.
Rohan, I'd only trade if he fails in finals again. He would get offers from non-contenders.

I don't think we'll be active at all. Yep we've got a few players pushing for a place in the seniors but that's a good position to have and let's not forget our injury situation right now and the back end of the season has been very good. No players I can think of not available right now who would be in our first 22.

The McVeigh situation is interesting. I think we'll let him go. One to free up a spot and also the fact that I think he'll get a reasonable offer for next year from another club with the coaching add on. I'm not sure he'll take peanuts from us and freeing up $150,000 or so of cap space may tempt us to call time, hopefully with a flag.

Wouldn't worry too much about guys not getting a game, it's their job to demand selection. Florent, Dawson and Aliir are ones that come to mind as guys that will be pushing very hard for a spot next year but both Ollie and Dawson have two year extensions. Who would they push out of the current 22? Towers is always vulnerable of course and Newman will need to repeat this year's efforts but I can't see anyone else fading. But there will be chances via injuries and they just need to take them like Melican did.

re the others I can't see any of them (Towers, Robbo, Marsh etc) having any real currency but if we got a chance to get an upgrade of our third rounder to a pick in the late 30s then I guess we might be tempted. There's only two players that I can see getting offers we may look at. Tippett purely because of how much cap space his departure it would free up and Aliir because potentially he could have some real currency. Tippett it would have to be a compelling offer to satisfy both us and Kurt and Aliir I think we would only entertain if he wanted to leave which hopefully he doesn't.

I can see the end of next year being one of movement. Robbo, Towers, Rose, Foote, Laidler, AJ and Jessica (Maibaum) are all playing for a new deals and McVeigh (if here) would be a retirement. Think Reg probably has another year but he will be 32 at the end of next year. Smith will only be 30 and should go another year but the end can come quickly.

So, looking at next year, lots of players coming out of contract. None you'd class as critical re-signs and not suggesting they'll all get delisted but surely a good sign for lots of competition for spots next year.

All in all the squad is as good as I've ever seen it.

McVeigh really has played great since his return, he's a backline general, reads the play so well and elite by foot, not easy things to replace, deserves another year but will he be let go to free up a spot for a younger player? We gave Goodes another year and lost Membrey. I think you need to weigh these things very carefully, McVeigh playing on could be the difference between a 2018 flag or not but you have to balance that with the needs to provide opportunities for talented younger players.

This is a nice place to be with your list, we have a substantial number of very good to elite players, none of whom are immediate retirees, we should be contenders for 3-5 years at least.

Of our most recent 22, Towers, Cunningham, Sinclair/Tippett are the most vulnerable IMO. Players unlikely to get an extension are Leonardis, BJ this year, Rose, Laidler, Foote, Robbo who may not improve sufficiently to survive past next year.

Players like Aliir, Hayward, Florent have already displayed high level skills and footy nous, Dawson must be tried next year, O'Riordan, Cameron, Murray and Fisher have displayed ability, plus there's pick 17 & 35 coming this year.

I'm bullish on our list but it will take clever management to bring through the best players at the right time and avoid Membrey/Biggs type absconding. We could even pull a trade like swapping our first this year for someone's first next year and making the required three list changes by two upgrades and pick 35. That would give us two first rounders next year in case we need them for an academy player. Very interesting trade period coming up.

Membrey only plays well against lesser sides. No loss to us. Biggs has been good for the Dogs.

Since our picks will be later here are two i would like to consider.

I believe we need big body midfielders like Crisp and the Bont, although we have shied away from that the last couple of drafts.

These two player have had their injuries, so they have slip under the radar, hopefully.

                                Tom McCartin and Aiden Bonar.

"The younger brother of 2014 number one overall selection, Paddy McCartin, Tom McCartin, 192cm, 86kg, who missed the 2016 season due to back and hip problems, has announced himself. McCartin collected 21 disposals, eight marks (one contested), three goals, five behinds and two score assists, turning that in against arguably the TAC Cup's premier key defender in Oscar Clavarino. This performance from McCartin follows 11 disposals, eight marks (four contested) and two goals in the first round."

                                For Aiden - 190 cm, 89kgs

"He can play anywhere, but I think he's an inside midfielder. He's a beast, he kicks it really well, he's got explosive speed still. He's a booming 60-metre kick, and he hasn't lost his vertical jump. He's got an unknown factor about him."

I really feel we have been lucky with Mills and Heeny, two top three picks, but to get the most out of the present draft we need to think outside the box.
Burton from the Hawks and Witherden from Brisbane are two players who had injury in their draft years and have turn out brilliantly.
We should roll the dice, but both players have recovered from their injuries and are showing great promise in the games they are playing.
We need to think of replacements for midfielders.
                                doof-doof
