I thought Towers was also one of the few who tried to run to intelligent spots and do something other than "dump kick" (copyright Roosey) the ball to the forward line.

Despite the disappointing result last night against the cats, there is plenty of upside for mine. First, look at the five youngest swans on the field:
1. Mills, 20, 46 games. I don't think I've seen a more consistent Swans player over his first two seasons.
2. Heeney, 21, 58 games, plays a bit like Dangerfield, our side is so much better when he is firing.
3. Hewett, 21, 48 games, dead eye dick, the next Luke Parker?
4. Papley, 21, 40 games, love this kid. His defensive work is second to none and has goal sense that cannot be taught.
5. Jones, 22, 54 games. A hard nut who has had a break out season.
Secondly, you've got to have the cattle. Whilst our kids are talented, they will benefit from another year under their belts, and consistency will come. There's not much that a coach can do if across the park it is so hard to find players that won their position - in my view we were beaten physically and mentally and the Cats players (who were embarrassed last week) had something to prove. Another year into our list and I think they will develop the capacity to absorb the pressure and respond with precision. As example of this is towers who had his best season this year. He has been a whipping boy in past seasons but watching him come into his own this year reminded me that our recruiters know what they are doing.
Thirdly, injuries to our ruckmen have meant we could not get a settled midfield system. Tippo is still good enough at his best, but he simply needs to perform next season. Naismith is getting better and Sinkers needs to improve consistency. That we have been afflicted with so many injuries to ruckmen this season and still managed to make the prelim, imagine what would be possible with a fit and firing ruck/forward combination. Same goes for bud. He was injured last night and it really showed.
Fwiw I don't think we would have beat the crows anyway. Remember that we squeaked past them last time when mills received a dubious 50m free. I don't think we have the cattle this year but by next season, I think our core is going to improve and we should get a better start next year. I don't think the cats will go much further either. I think it's Adelaide vs tigers for the gf.

This bloke you say is a crap coach has the second best winning % of any coach since 1965 who has coached over 100 games. The best record, the bloke who beat us last night.

I don't know how many coaches there have been at VFL/AFL level over the last 120 years, but only just over 50 (54 I think) have successfully won a premiership. That's an awful lot of failures by your yardstick - and Horse was one of the successes.Comment

Created history from 0-6. Simply ran out of juice understandably. Should be contender for coach of the year. Too many spoilt entitled modern swan supporters.Comment

Good point. For those born after 1990, you don't know what real football pain is......I was born in 1960. I am loving our power club at the moment but on the other hand, I would really like another premiership real soon!Comment

I don't think it's about being entitled. Its about understanding the position the club has been in for the last few years and knowing that you don't get handed endless opportunities to win premierships, you have to convert those opportunities while you have them.
Longmire has got the club in the position to win premierships, so he's obviously not a bad football coach. He backs his team to go harder and outlast their opponents.
I hear a lot that the Swans play, every week, a brand of footy that stands up in finals. The problem is that if another team steps up to play finals football. He's already played all his cards.Comment

I was born six years earlier Stevo and still have mental scarring as old South fan despite fantastic run over last 20 years. One more flag would just about do me but they are a bit addictive!Comment

The worse finals score in a 100 years, a performance that is nothing short of embarrassing. Great coaches don't have such records on their CV's. John is a good coach not a great time. Good coaches win an occasional flag when they get the chance. Great coaches win more than they lose when the get the chance. It's the difference between John and Clarkson. We have a great list (Clarkson predicted us to win at all) yet what we got was a disgrace, again.
Losing is fine, I wouldn't have been disappointed but happy if we lost a close won. But we got smashed in a final with at least the second best list left. Great coaches don't get smashed in finals.
If we want to win another premiership we need a great coach not a good one. I'm happy to take the risk to win one in the next few years. The current set-up is not going to win a premiership, change is needed.
Thank you to John its time to move on. With luck a great coach will get performances from our finals under-performers, sure cant change them all easily but we give them a new coach and a year to turn it around before we undertake ruthless list management. If we just accept such a poor performance we risk repeating it again and again. Great cultures don't accept embarrassment without action.
It's a risk for sure but I would rather roll the dice and chance it then stand still. Buddy probably only has 1 or 2 top notch years left, if we don't win in the next 2 years we will see his salary weighing the side down. I'm happy we took the risk to get him. It's time to roll the dice again and hope it work out.
There isn't a great coach out there people will say, yes there is we have to find him.Comment
