Does it start with Mc and end with Laren?

Darren Goldspink? Though he might have been the one before. He was umpiring back in the 1990s. I once met someone (cousin of a friend) who was an avid Bloods fan (of the South Melbourne variety) whose ex-wife was married to Goldspink. He reckoned it explained why Goldspink hated the Swans so much (because he was insecure about his wife's ex?)

Ha ha! Sounds like TV's Doctor Foster. (Not that I've watched the show but have read about it - glorious marital revenge.)

Not until we get to the weeping and gnashing of teeth.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

So, if Richmond beat us in the GF, then that is a sign of the end times, then?

Definitely. Weeping and gnashing of teeth in abundance.

Is it just me or is this thread supposed to be about 'Longmire'? I'd be overjoyed if there was another thread where all the umpire talk happened.

That would make it 1 out of 4 GF wins for Longmire. Not great, but he has still led us to 5 GFs.

FWIW, from 1996, the Swans have been in 6 grand finals and only won 2. Wish it were the other way around.

Goldspink - of course. Thanks Liz. Though the interview I heard as I drove down to the 2005 GF where he said he and the other umps were proud they let those last few frantic minutes of the semi run their course gave me grudging liking of the man. But there were resounding cheers when he failed his physical tests and was dropped as an ump. He was a postman - or owned a post office - I believe.

A win would make it 50:50 and I'd take that any day.

Wow, just consulting AFL Record, we did have both Goldspink and McLaren that day. And we still won!? Though the free kick count was only 13/12 in the Weagles favour. Maybe the fact that we were the feel good story, tempered their natural tendency to cane us?
Of course, I still haven't forgiven McLaren, for the 15/1 count that he dished out at Subi one night.

And on Longmire's finals record, the Essendon thrashing was his tenth finals win, which means that he has now coached more Swans finals wins, than any other coach. The previous best was Roosy with nine and for the next best, you have to go back to the 30s, where Jack Bisset had six wins. Another stat that emphasises, that we modern fans are living in a Swans golden era.

Good point, we really have been lucky from that perspective.

Yes, I'm a lucky boy. (Mainly because I've survived the previous forty odd years of degenerate behaviour).

Come on guys, let's start razor Ray campaign as GF umpire. He may make strange decisions, but he comes across as impartial. I respect him for that. No doubt Gil M will ensure Stevic and Meredith will umpire the big match, especially if it's Richmond v Sydney.
