Little bit difficult without a fit Heeney, Papley and Jack. As for the previous 3 years, 2 GFs and a finals berth not bad for someone who apparently sat on his hands.

Good point, one of a number of changes he's made since then. Much made of the stars returning and once again winning contested possession - but can you name one of our stars that even now is having a better year than last year, and there have still been times in recent weeks when we haven't managed to win CP. The major changes have been the success of the team defence approach (holding the opposition's key playmakers, strangling them at the clearance, and brilliantly stopping opponents even getting inside 50), as well as the greater flexibility of the players. All of that requires acknowledgment of great work by the coaching staff as well as the players.

Any season that doesn't produce a flag is a failure. Especially after 2016 grand final robbery. No flag with Franklin in the team would also be a lost opportunity.

Totally agree. Success is what the Swans have achieved in the last (how many years?)
- Making finals in all but 1 year (2009?)
- Making 5 GF, winning 2 since 2005
- Not bottoming out
- Good 'culture'
- Not making the news for all the wrong reasons (Talia excepted).
- Record membership

Last year our best five players had fantastic years, as evidenced by their selection in the AA team. It's why we were able to reach a grand final with so many young, inexperienced players.

I agree with you than none has attained those heights this year. Franklin will probably be the only Swan in contention for the AA team (and in a season where the goal scoring by all the best forwards is a little lower than last year - partly because JJK has been injured for several weeks). I think Rampe is close to last year's form but his spell early in the season means he won't make the team.

But we've had improvement from the next tier of players, including some of those who were very young and inexperienced last year. It's a much more solid foundation for a team, I think, though it's also good to know that Kennedy, Parker and Hannebery (in particular) have another level they can reach and may yet do in the last two months of the season.

Well, incredibly, it is actually possible different Swans supporters measure the teams success in different ways.
Not quite sure how one person's measure of success can be "wrong" and another is "right".
It's highly likely the players themselves don't all have exactly the same way of measuring their own and their
teams success either.

Perhaps the term "ultimate success" for a flag meets all needs.

Some can settle for "partial success" of a good solid 4th or similar.

As supporters we don't have much choice but to settle for what the team deliver. The reality is flags are ridiculously
hard to win. Personally, after last year when I think we should have won because we were the best team in the comp,
I won't be happy unless we will the whole shebang. I've seen six Grand Finals, and we've only won two of them.
Two is not enough out of six for me at least. Four would have been better, 2006 & 2016 were the one's that go away IMO.
Sure, coming third or fourth this year after the 0-and-6 start will be commendable, but in a few years time it's not
going to count for much. But I understand that others have a different take on what constitutes a successful year.
