I would trade Sam Reid for the right price. He's missing so often, we don't miss him.

I disagree. We do miss him because we?ve used ?stopgap? replacements when he?s been out.

Whether we trade him or not we have lacked depth in the mobile tall forward department. I suspect between Blakey and McCartin we?ll be covered in a year or two. Problem is hopefully only a short-term one.

Chronically injury prone like Tippett. Not sure any other club would take the risk with Reid. Very good player- cross fingers and toes that he holds up for rest of year. Not convinced that will happen.

He could well command a five year deal for $4-5 million at Carlton, North, Footscray or Essendon (he is a Victorian, so most likely to move home if anywhere).

Players like Aliir are rare and hard to find, but can change the course of a game and the way a team plays.

Gee I hope your right. But this is yet to be proven. Played half dozen good games in 2016 and one in 2018 in which he played a loose defensive role against an under manned WC forward line.

I'm a little surprised by the suggestion by a few that Aliir's best (or only) position is as a loose defender. Very few players build long careers in such a role. Those who do are excellent readers of the play or great kicks or - most likely - both. Even those who appear to play "loose in defence" generally are accountable for an opponent at times, and they certainly need to be able to be accountable for a player.

Aliir is a reasonable safe kick but he's not adventurous. He doesn't see long options or trust himself to guide a bullet pass through traffic. And I've seen nothing to suggest he's a great reader of the play. It would be surprising if a player who came quite late to the game and is still inexperienced at the top level would be. In time he might become a good to great reader of the play but he's not now.

If he's going to make it, he's going to have to start out as a key defender, playing on key forwards. As a start he might get the "third tall" but he'll need to graduate pretty quickly to minding dangerous tall forwards. Melican started to do this a bit towards the end of last year and showed even more promising signs early this season, before he got injured.

But I also differ from many others on here in my belief of whether he can do that. I think he has all the traits. He's not going to body them, ala Reg, but he has the closing pace and leap to defend one on one. The discipline and concentration will improve with more experience. He did plenty of one-on-one defending in his handful of games in 2016, he's done it in the NEAFL, and I see no reason why he can't do it again at senior AFL level, opportunities permitting.

I see on the AFL site that Grundy says that both he and McVeigh are keen to play on again next year. Different to what Longmire said earlier that McVeigh plans to retire at the end of the year. We will need to trade out some of our bottom end players if we are to keep both.

Both would be on modest contracts going forward so no salary cap issues with those two guys. Other factors will come into play for the club in making decisions for 2019. There will be turn over at the bottom of the list.

Depends on what we do trading out but if Blakey is pick 5-8 we'll only have a pick in the 30s that's useful, after that our pick will be in the 70s. Blakey, 30s pick and Ronke upgrade are our three picks we must take.

We could have another useful pick if say Lloyd moved out, Newman I reckon is gone due to lack of senior opportunities but will only net us a pick upgrade.

The salary cap isn't the issue. The problem is that by allowing them to play on (esp McVeigh) is that we run the risk of losing our youth as a consequence. It happened with Goodes and we shouldn't allow it to happen again.

We need to be more like Hawthorn when it comes to tough decisions like this. Why lose a player who could potentially play for a decade for the sake of allowing an older player to play for one more year?

McVeigh is playing well now but he's only an injury away from struggling to get on the park as he has the last few years. We also have players who can replace him. Reg is playing as well as he ever has, is extremely resilient and Maibaum isn't quite ready to step into his role. I can see him playing for another season or two.

With our current run of injuries and perceived lack of scoring options is there a place for James Rose ? I haven?t seen his name offered up anywhere or is he just not a viable option ? I seem to remember he had a promising debut.

As an advocate of the previously much maligned Dean Towers I am a little torn as I think he deserved to return to the side.
Putting that aside let?s hope James has an impact and delivers tomorrow night in what should be a great game.

I know there will be howls of derision for daring to suggest Reg and AJ but I have my reasons.

RETIRE:
Grundy; reason has lost any pace he had, loses his opponent too easily. Reading the play is only good if the opposition are going long into forward line. It's time to find out if Maibaum has the goods.
Jack: has lost his main weapon, his pace, now runs into trouble and first instinct is to duck. Kicks lack penetration.
Johnson; as much as it would be a great feel good story to see him back, I don't see it happening now.

McVeigh; It's his decision but should be encouraged to look at coaching role or move to another club like Hodge has done.

Trades:
Rohan, lack of real impact in most games. Ronke/Papley/Florent can all do his job now. May not get much but we can at least get to another club.
Hanneberry; I hoped he would be a captain at some future stage, but he has been cruelled by injury. We have other options.
I missed a big one: DUMB football, trade in some footy smarts.

Rose; he has been around for ages but is not AFL quality.
