As such, the most recent AFL draft podcast this week is of some interest. The first two players featured - Caldwell and Hately- probably won't be available to the club if they go in with draft picks similar to where they currently stand. But Smith (Ely, not Bailey) looks to have some of the attributes you'd think the club might be looking for. From the short clips included in this podcast he looks to have some OK speed (not express) but, more importantly, he's a put-the-head-over the ball kind of player.

U18: Is your club looking for a gun midfielder? - AFL.com.au
I know a lot of people on here are thinking the same, that we need more inside midfielders, but I see it differently. I think we still have an imbalance toward inside mids and need more outside run and skills in particular.

Our on ball brigade problems stem more from the lack of ruck dominance than the quality of our inside midfielders and unless Naismith gets up, that may hang around for a while. Even though I'm projecting Cameron as our #1 ruckman, along with a concomitant improvement in our stoppage play, I don't see Cameron as more than an average ruckman at stoppages. The advantage will be more his work around the ground while hopefully breaking even at stoppages. Kennedy, Parker, Hewett, Mills, Heeney and Dawson is a big (in body size) midfield, with some of the best ball winning capacity of any group in the league. In fact, I see more rotations forward for this group, especially for Kennedy, unless Naismith is our ruckman, in which case, I'd leave him as a prime stoppage mid.

What we don't have is the Dylan Shiel type inside midfielder who can break away from the stoppages with pace, but there aren't too many of those going around. Jones is probably closest of that type of player without showing he has the ability to play that role, though in fairness, he hasn't been given much opportunity.

There's no certain or immediate solution to this dilemma. Even if we manage to snap up pick 4 in the Hannebery trade and draft Bailey Smith, who can break from the packs with pace, it will still be a few years before he's likely to be a weapon. I slightly prefer Izak Rankine anyway if that trade comes to pass.

I would continue with the transition which is currently in play, improving our attack from defence and trying to move the ball through the middle with pace. We won't see the fruits of this until (or unless) Ling and Stoddart become a part of our senior side. Except for Franklin, our over 30 crew that will be moving on are on the slow side, but the replacements are all a lot quicker.

I see that Lloyd has is now been contracted for another 4 years, which I think is just fantastic. He is overseas on vacation, instead of spending time shopping himself around, which says to me that there wasn't much question about him signing on again.

The guys who are moving on, Hanners, Rohan and Newman, are good moves for all concerned. The new group of young players taking their places have a lot to prove, but for now I'm backing the plan and staying positive about future.

It's interesting that so many RWOers thought Lloyd was gone, when indications were that he was going to stay. I think it's turned out as expected, that we just needed to confirm the freeing up of salary cap space before we could commit to a long term deal, which was the reason for the holdout, not that he wanted to move clubs. Once again, the Swans don't lose a player they want to keep.

He might want to hide after it was reported that his manager was asking $1000 per interview if Mitchell wins the Brownlow. Unbelievable!

And he doesn't even tell jokes! Unbelievable indeed. I'll have to talk to BT about upping my fees.

2018 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel

From AFL site article Jake is currently on an end of season break in Hong Kong with Heath Grundy and Nick Smith.

So Reg is still escaping the night shift at home!

It seems to be a bit of a tradition for the defenders to have an o/s jaunt at end of season - I recall some of them, including Grundy, also did it last year.

I must be a bit like Hanners and be an over-analyser. I find it interesting because:

              a. As Lloyd is overseas, the contract must’ve been signed before he left and so the Swans have purposely and strategically delayed the announcement, and

              b. I didn’t think that the time gave us the most exposure of the good news but perhaps this is not the case as it will probably be discussed in the pre-game discussion of the big prelim final.

It sounds like he was always going to stay and just trusted his manager to get the best deal done. The parameters were likely already discussed and agreed.

Perfect timing for the announcement. It's convenient that Lloyd is overseas and not available for interviews, even at $1000 a pop. This way there no chance of getting caught off guard with a question that might reveal our salary cap situation.

You can sign a contract and scan it. It doesn't need to be an original.

Now that this deal has been done, I wonder if the Hanners deal has been agreed to?

And last year's draft focussed on outside run and carry. As you point out, any young inside player we draft this year won't be ready to perform that role at senior level for a few years, which is precisely why I think the club needs to start drafting in a couple now, and not wait for a few years. I don't expect any onballer we might draft this year is going to come in and fix our 2018 midfield issues. That can only be fixed by getting in a mature player, or moving around the 21-23 years olds currently in the senior team but playing elsewhere (and by getting a proper pre-season into at least one of Kennedy or Parker).

Who was the last inside midfielder we drafted? Either Hewett or Mills, depending on whether Mills really is an inside midfielder. (I think he can be but we're yet to find out.) You can this at NEAFL level where the likes of Dawson, Rose, Towers and Newman play on ball. In a few years time Kennedy will be thinking about putting away the boots for the last time, and Parker will be in the final third of his career. It's their replacements that need to be drafted in the next year or two.

The young outside run and carry is at the club - Florent, COR, Hayward, Ling, Stoddart. Sure, keep adding to it, but at some point the club needs to back in those it has and wait for them to develop.

Gold Coast said they were not going to make a play for Lloyd, so not sure where he was going to go. Although I did think they might come after him with some of the Lynch-May money.

Very very happy he’s signed. Now I REALLY can look forward to seeing what trade and free agency madness unfolds.

The definition of what constitutes an inside midfielder, and midfielder in general, is blurring. Now an inside midfielder is what we might call a stoppage specialist. It doesn't meant that it's all they do, but represents the player's point of difference. I think of Florent, Ronke, Ling and Stoddart as midfielders. I still expect them to win contested possessions, but not so much at stoppages.

If we want to play the tried and true Swans footy of the past dozen years or so, then maybe we can just continue piling up inside mids. But I think we need to continue the change to more of an outside game, especially since we don't have a proven dominant ruckman. A stoppage focused game really only favours Kennedy, which is important, but he is 30 and probably not in our next premiership. The rest, like Heeney and Mills, can go with a more balanced game. This past year convinced me that we have to get out of the stoppage focused game plan.
