+1 I remember making that same prediction a little while back for exact same reason. I hope not, as I think Cameron & Sinclair could form a useful ruck/forward combo. Tom Hickey & Jordan Roughead are other possible options for WC. GWS will also be desperate for a ruckman as they're likely to lose Robb, despite murmurs of Mummy making a comeback.Comment

+1 I did mention getting Dom Tyson on 7th October:
Still think we need to urgently recruit an A grade midfielder to replace Hannebery (assuming he'll get to Saints). Despite his past 2 seasons performances hampered by interrupted pre-seasons, I still class Hanners as an A grader overall. I rate Dom Tyson who I think can easily become an A grader who is linked to Essendon.Comment

Now that Dylan Shiel is off the table for the Saints, they won't be needing their pick 4 for a trade. They will be desperate not to let the Hanners trade fall through. We should hold out for a swap of 1st round picks, which is equivalent in value points to a pick 23. That more than fair, in fact it's unders for us.
I don't rate Dom Tyson either for our midfield. We don't need more inside mids.
I see that Rose will be staying another year, which I'm pleased about. Hope that he can find the consistency that allows him to make it at AFL level.Comment

A week ago Harley was quoted as saying our focus for the trade period was to: "increase our midfield depth, get some run through there ... and also some key position players".
I don't really understand the KP focus, particularly in terms of what would be available now. We've got Melican and Aliir as long-term options plus Grundy, with Rampe able to play on most key forwards if needed. Then Franklin plus Reid and Sinclair to add back in as key forwards if needed next year, and McCartin continuing to develop. I can't see who else (that would be available at reasonable trade cost) would be worth bringing as another KP option.
I hope they have taken the view that we can replace Hanners, Rohan and Tippett with 4 or 5 role players who address our needs, in terms of salary. Otherwise keeping some options open for someone to slip out like a Langdon or maybe now someone from Essendon given they have to trade for Shiel.Comment

Thanks, Liz. You've brightened my day (it's pouring with rain here in Gippsland).
I guess I was being too pessimistic, and I was forgetting the 20% discount. I can easily see the Bulldogs (or any of the others) throwing in a bogus bid for Blakey - what have they got to lose? That means we'd need at least 1315 points to cover them. But as you pointed out, we should get enough for Hannabery to allow us to keep our first pick.
Can we promote more than one rookie to make up our draft obligations?
Re rookies, unless they've changed the rules yet again (which is entirely possible) we can only count one promoted rookie towards the quota of three. So we have to draft Blakey + 1 (or someone else +1) as a minimum. The club has found good talent late in the draft (and into the rookie) draft in most recent seasons so I don't see that as a problem, though if you take someone in the ND, even late, you have to give them a two year contract so there's a bit more commitment than for rookies. The club could always delist players like Robinson or Rose if they wish to keep them, keeping their fingers crossed that no-one will step in to draft them ahead of us or offer them a DFA spot, and then redraft them late in the ND. It would probably be low risk.
Or if they intend to keep Fox for another year, rather than promoting him, they could delist him and draft him to fill that spot.
None of Fox, Robinson and Rose has yet been announced as delisted, so either the club is still thinking about keeping them or they think they might have trade currency.Comment

Our position in the Hannebery trade has strengthened you'd think.
The Saints will be desperate for this trade to go through, otherwise they will look on the nose and won't have much to sell their fans going forward.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

Many thought Kreuger would go in the ND last year, but didn't even get a rookie selection. Now he's going for pick 42. I suppose we could say Kelly was a real steal, having missed out on several drafts, then going for pick 24 last year and now being valued as a top 10 pick.
A good strategy used by many clubs for dealing with the compensation paid to other clubs for a player wanting to come to theirclub, e.g. Hanners and Rohan, is to offload all the reasonable pick options so that you're only left with crap to give in a take it or leave it deal. The Swans are too nice, and will usually let it go through anyway.
This really angry me!.
We should have made a play for him; he is really good, and how does Carlton get to trade him for 42??
It seems that this has just enabled Vic club to get more picks; i mean what will Carlton pick up for 42??
Really disgraceful.doof-doofComment

IMO has to have a massive summer, play the first few games next year and play very well, and might be able to consolidate a spot from there. But anything less than that and he's probably a wasted spot on the list again.
PS. I assume Ludwig's reference to Rose getting another based on the quote from Blakey re: Rose's NEAFL GF performance, saying that made them excited about what he could do in 2019.Comment

Blakey plus mature ready to rock trades would be my objective plus our rookies this week
In:
1. Tom Langdon
2. Blakey
3. Vandenberg
4. R.clarke
5. D.clarke
6. Duryea
7. St Kilda player for hannes? Or second rd 2019
8. Rookie
9. Rookie
Tom Langdon 500-600k pa not sure for me even if possible but supposedly we have made a formal offer. If we out bid the pies they will have to take whatever the AFL determined or they can take our pick 13 which I think is too high
Pick 24 to pies for Langdon trade
Granted he had a great GF but he isn't worth 500-600K or Pick 24Comment

What is the latest with Ling as well ? Never talk about by the club, via injury or even a bull@@@@@ update about him looking forward to a big pre-season etc
Similar to where we are picking this year has to be in final 22 calculations for next yearComment

You are clutching at straws. The grand old lady of australian sport was one of sydney's home grounds. I have never advocated "selling a home game" or playing a final at the home of another club. That would be maximum disloyalty to the club, and I pity those who advocate it.Comment

I think with the possible recruitment of Duryea it might be an indication of filling the void on the left wing or HBF as a left footer in the rotation
We have lost newman and hannes but I don’t think the left footed Ling and Stoddart are quite ready to bridge the gap
I think from memory Dylan Clarke is a left footer but more inside then outside player and will be 21 next year
I suppose we are building their engines of Stoddart and Ling bit by bit and the coaches don’t see them as definites to get thru a whole season in Snrs next year ?
Just a hunch"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Kennedy and McGlynn didn't either ...
Marty Mattner, Rhyce Shaw, Shane Mumford ... all would have been worth a pick higher than 24 in hindsight

The reports in the media are saying $600k
Sounds like langdons management talking it up
But elite mids are $1mill plus per season now shiels , kelly , gaff etc are demanding big bucks
Very very good mids $800k ala hannes Kennedy etc
So I suppose Langdon would have to be $500k pa minimum as a player with the potential to be a dominant important player"be tough, only when it gets tough"
