      NEAFL 2016 Round 5

Sydney Swans Reserves v Aspley Hornets @ Sydney Cricket Ground

      Saturday 5th May 2018
      3:45pm
      Sydney Cricket Ground

Winless, bottom of the ladder and with a goalkicking accuracy that would make the Western Bulldogs blush, it has been an inauspicious start to Tadhg Kennelly's NEAFL coaching career. Injuries haven't helped and neither has the fact his first 3 opponents have been the other 3 AFL reserves side.

On Saturday, he will face his first non-AFL side in the Aspley Hornets who despite recruiting 3 ex-AFL players in the offseason in Andrew Swallow (North Melbourne), Jake Spencer (Melbourne) and Jono Freeman (Brisbane), have struggled. The Hornets lost their first 3 games before breaking through with an upset away victory over the young Canberra Demons outfit last week.

      Team List
      Listed players
      Changes
      In: Newman, O'Riordan, Robinson
      Out: James ROSE (suspended)

Rose suspended after lashing out against the Suns's Connor Nutting who had been assigned to tag him in the second half. Suspension duration is unknown. Newman and O'Riordan return after sitting out last as traveling emergencies for the senior team. Along with Robinson, they will boost a depleted midfield who had to rely on the likes of Amartey, Aliir and Ling in there last week. Ling is likely to be the rested emergency from this game.

Cameron had his best game for the Swans last week but has missed out on facing ex-Demon ruckman Spencer who is out injured. However his replacement Wolbers is no slouch having had experience as a top up player for both Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

      Academy Players/Topups
In: Adams, Bartholomaeus, Casalini, Dol, Ellem, Eynaud, Maguire, Meacham
Out: Darcy CORDELL (omitted), Chris FRANGOS (omitted), Christian LOONE (Academy), Harry PARKER (Academy), Mckinlay PEARCE (Academy), Mitchell ROGERS (Academy), Jeremy SHUMACK (Academy), Jacob SINCOCK (omitted), Luke STANFORD (omitted)

After debuting 7 players last week, the Swans will roll out another 5 debutants, possibly 7 if the emergencies are needed.

      Aspley Hornets
      In: Holman, Wolbers
Out: Will FLETCHER (injured), Jake SPENCER (injured)

The Hornets strength lies in their midfield where two-time NEAFL MVP winner Matthew Payne teams up with ex-Kangaroos skipper Andrew Swallow. Between them they are averaging 58 disposals, 7 marks, 6 tackles and 13 clearances with Payne in particular impressive being named BOG for the Hornets in 3 of their 4 matches.

Up forward, Freeman has been consistent source of goals for them, kicking at least 1 goal in each of the 4 matches and will be marked by the in-form Maibaum. James Nelis has also been playing as a deep lying forward and has 5 goals.

Down back, experienced duo Gavin Grose and former Suns player Jackson Allen have been solid. Grose as a key defender will take one of Amartey or McCartin while the smaller Allen has been prolific as a half back flanker, averging 7.0 rebound 50s a game, 2nd in the NEAFL only to Cam Ilett of the NT Thunder.

Former Swans Academy member William Gowers featured as a regular topup for our side over a number of years and has made a solid start to his Aspley carerr averaging 18 disposals 3.3 marks and 3 tackles.

A very young side yet again due to injuries. We need to start getting some players back. Rose is unfortunate. the likes of Dawson, Bell, foote, AJ, Pink and Rose would all make the reserves much stronger. If you add returning senior players; Reid, Hannas & Melican it would be a super team.

But the reality is we can only play those who are fit to play. the toppies have been brave against very good opposition so far but playing the whole seaon with toppies as suns and GWs did last season is not sustainable if you want to make finals. But there is also a coaching reality too. Shaw got the best out of every player no matter if they were toppies or listed players. I hope Kennelly and Laidler can start to do the same.

Bit of a question mark over both coaches, especially laidlaw.
Also swans play to develop listed players rather than the win.

Aspley have real big bodies and their physical pressure is causing our players plenty of issues.

I'm going to say something that some may find a little controversial. I really think the Tadhg Kennelly is perhaps a very ordinary coach and is possibly the main reason we are winless in the reserves this season. Yes I am aware we have a lot of injuries so that does not help much but I still feel that if Rhys Shaw was coaching this side he would have managed to squeeze a couple more wins out than the zero we have so far!

There are no doubt others on here that may be able to throw some stats at me re: Kennelly's coaching history and I would be interested to see how he has done before this...

A lot of skill errors and turn overs, hard to blame a coach for that

It really disappoints me to have to say this but Armety can't be picked to play senior football if he continues to miss goals like the one he just missed then 20 meters out almost directly in front.

It's such a shame as he competes so well and takes a really good mark. Another example of drafting athletes instead of footballers.

If he could kick straight he would be a gem. Impressed by Cameron's game, marking well around the ground

Yeah I know. Such a shame as he looks really good other than when his boot hits the ball... [emoji24]

I have seen 3 games by the Reserves now, every bloody week is bad kicking - cost them 2 games.

Wow... another horrible loss by the Swans ressies that can be directly blamed on extremely poor kicking in front of goal. Such a shame our young key position players that we drafted last year are horrible kicks for goal...
