Strong positioning, followed by deft taps to advantage. While he probably isn't tall enough to be dominant at the AFL level, he is definitely developing some skills. And in general play, he was responsible for one the day's highlights; where he roved his own dropped mark, then rapidly slotted* the goal from tight in the pocket.

    * While typing, as an afterthought, I decided to add a bit more descriptiveness, by putting 'rapidly' in front of 'slotted'. During that process, one of the options that the predictive text gave me, was 'rapist otter'??? I doubt if those two words, have ever been combined before.
I showed this post to goswannette (not usually a reader of RWO) ... she had such a serious facial expression - until she got to the last two sentences, when she burst out laughing. Thanks deja

It's a fairly long highlights package running just past 12 minutes and 30 seconds, so if you don't have the patience to sit through all of it, I recommend the 2 consecutive goals starting from 9:08 onwards. One is an athletic Amartey outside of the foot finish and the second is a coast to coast goal featuring a scintillating 3 bounce run by Stoddart through the corridor.

Very happy to watch extra highlights! Thanks ugg.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

I don't think that he played in the first quarter. If he did, he didn't trouble the statisticians. Pretty good after that. Played mainly as a defensive flanker and was generally classy when he got the ball, without really dominating. Some of his pressure work was also useful. However, I'm not sure if he's built up enough stamina, to be considered for a promotion. Also in that regard, Stoddart was also playing back flank, and he had a blinder: so Ling would be behind him.

Yeah even without seeing him, his recent output would suggest that he's a long way from any senior action

Yes, very creative ball use and already seems to have built up a rapport with Menzel.

Great highlights package - thanks ugg.

You can see Stoddart's highlights around the 2 minute mark, just before 6 minutes and his three bounce effort through the centre of the ground before delivering to Menzel inside 50 just before 10 minutes.

Menzel's goal assist (about just before 11 minutes) was brilliant. And the contested mark that led to his last goal was also very tasty.

It's worth adding that several other players have been performing well without getting much in the commentary:
                          • Joel Amartey continues to show an excellent all around game. His reflexes are quick and his mind is sharp. I think he has a big future. He's undersized for a ruckman, but he just may have enough in other respects to fill that role.
                          • Rose continues to impress with his work rate and repeat efforts. I hope he gets another shot at senior footy. His game is solid and he's got a lot of tricks as well.
                          • Zac Foot has quietly impressed.
                          • McInerney showing solid form with excellent pace and skill.
                          • As I suggested last year, if Toby Pink has a shot, it will be as a defender. He's developing nicely. I wonder if it will be enough to get another contract?

Love your post. I hope they do give Toby another contract. He was the only listed key back on the weekend and he played very well. Had a little trouble at times when Nichols went back. But any back would when giving away 10cm

Agree with you Ludwig that Amartey's form has been encouraging. Another reason to think our tall forward stocks should be in good condition once Buddy departs - though keeping them all at the club until that time arises might be a challenge.

Stoddart's run and bounce looks even more impressive on repeat viewing. Not only does he reach top speed quickly, he remains in control throughout. And is then balanced enough when he kicks not just to try and pick out a specific target, rather than just bombing it forward, but to actually deliver the ball perfectly into Menzel's path. I hope Bell watches that. He could take his game to another level if he starts trying to do that (even if he doesn't always manage to execute so perfectly).

Absolutely! Bell has great leg speed but does seem to just kick long and not necessarily to advantage when running at top speed. Would really help him get to another level if he could work on that part of his game as getting the ball doesn't appear to be an issue for him.
