    Jones-

I find is fascinating that no speculation or love from Alistair Clarkson for Jones despite them having lots of dollars free to spend

Interesting what Alistair wants and a bit of a benchmark in expectations of skill and execution from a player

    Missed out on coniglio

By all reports the 2019 draft pool is pretty even, and there should be some bargains to be had. I have been musing about what we need to develop to replace Jones and Kennedy down the track, and cast my eye over the local Gippsland boys with that in mind.
Although he hasn't featured in any top ten draft lists yet, Sam Flanders might be something special. He is a nuggety midfielder who generates a lot of contested possessions, and he averaged 22 disposals in the U18 Championships. Would be very good value as a late second or third round pick. It will be interesting to see how he goes at the Combine in October.
Another Gippslander who could be an absolute bargain is Leo Connolly. He didn't make the U18 Championships, and hasn't been selected for the Combine, but he's one of those run 50, kick 50 types that coaches love. He'll be worth watching in the upcoming U18 Finals.
Does anyone else keep an eye on Gippsland Power?

From out of contract players, there's Carlisle & Billy Longer.

There's also Blake Acres who is on the trade table, but being a West Australian, he'll probably be part of the Brad Hill trade.

Flanders was rated 9th best in Knightmare aka Chris Doerre's August AFL Draft Power Rankings (ahead of Caleb Serong no less!) and 10th in Cal Twomey's August AFL Draft Phantom Form guide. Doerre describes him as "one of the draft's most damaging forward of centre" and "a ball winning midfielder" listed at 182 cm and 81 kg with projected draft range 3-20.

I would think that if Carlton did offer up their first pick to us, and Papley was keen to move then we would be tempted. That is quite an early pick and worth more than his market value if he was out of contract. Someone earlier said that not many good players have gone at Carlton's number. Well I know Dangerfield went at 10 and Rioli at 12 in the same draft. No guarantees on draft picks though.

As of today, we have a list size of 45, taking into account all the retirements as well as the addition of Barry O'Connor.

I figure that we will have the maximum list size next year of 47, including 3 Cat B rookies: Wicks, O'Connor and an academy player (my guess is Thorne, but I'm ready for a surprise). McKeller has been pretty solid all year.

I think with the contract extension, we can assume that Papley stays.

If Jones is traded, STK and NM look likely destinations, where Blake Acres and Mason Wood would come into trade calculations. Without any word from the Jones camp, it's hard to see how this evolves. He has a record of making us wait, as he did 2 years ago. I'm not sure what his goal is; maybe he wants a long term contract.

Not sure about the situation with Tucker. I would say it's a medical call.

My projected delistings as of now are:
                  1. Hirst
                  2. Knoll: I can't see why we would keep him given he wasn't given a senior game even when we didn't have a ruckman and there was nothing to play for.
                  3. Thurlow
                  4. Menzel: Hasn't done enough to get excited about. We have enough forwards and don't need a marginal 28 yo to be a depth player.

That takes us to 6 draft picks, which could be about right.

Rose is a harder call than it seems. It's hard to cut your best reserves player. I think he is tradable, but obviously not for much. He probably goes one way or another.

I would like to see Cameron stay, given the uncertainty of our ruck situation going into next year. Naismith, Cameron and Sinclair is a reasonable ruck division, if we can just keep 2, any 2, off the injury list. If Cameron does get traded, we will probably just recruit another backup ruckman.

It's early days and the Swans are usually secretive about trade and draft plans, so I'm not expecting much info until deals are done.

I think our draft picks are fine. I wouldn't be looking to substantially change much, unless forced by trades. I would look to use our first 4 ND draft picks and either use a couple of our picks in the 50s as part of trades or try to swap them for 2020 later round picks.

I have read it somewhere that Knoll has been given a contract for next year. If that is correct then I would expect that it is in expectation of Cameron leaving unless it is considered that Naismith is unsalvageable.

Good analysis of our likely de-listings by Ludwig. Hard to argue with much there. I tend to agree with him that Menzel is in trouble and I also think that Rose will go. Hard to see Cameron staying given his lack of senior opportunities. I would not write-off Jones re-signing but if he gets a big offer elsewhere then it will be hard for him to resist. I don't think that the Swans see him as being worth big money. He is handy, pacy and in our best 22 but not a star.

I believe the AFL contract year ends on 31 October and this applies to all players. I don't think Knoll was given a 2 year deal. Naismith was given a 3 year deal while in rehab, so the Swans' medicos are more confident that he can recover than I am. I hope the injury curse for Naismith is over, because I do believe that he can be one of the better ruckmen in the AFL if given a fair run of games.

                          From the AFL website

Re-sign or let go? Your club's out-of-contract players

Out of contract: Joel Amartey, James Bell, Darcy Cameron, Robbie Fox, Cody Hirst, Zak Jones, Michael Knoll, Jack Maibaum, Hayden McLean, Daniel Menzel, Toby Pink, James Rose, Durak Tucker

Jones is the biggest name here and is another player being linked with a move to St Kilda ahead of what looms as a busy NAB AFL Trade Period. Bell is set to remain on the rookie list or be upgraded to the primary list, while Knoll is believed to have signed on for another 12 months but fellow mid-season draftee Hirst is still waiting to find out. McLean, who was signed in the pre-season, should continue as well. Cameron's future is unclear and it may be at a rival club, while ex-Cat Menzel will hope he's done enough to earn a fresh deal.

                            Wish list:

                            1. Daniher (50/50 Ruck FF, SCG small ground and for opposition to match up on Heeney, buddy etc upfront is nuts)

                            2. Jack Martin (we need more outside run and better forward entries and I think he won’t would be too expensive if he ends up with the stats we are looking for Re forward entries or HBF line breaks / $550k pa ?)

                            3. Bennell ( small risk $ wise but big reward if he comes good)

                            Swans team 2020:

To start the season im guessing our best 22 will be

                            FB: Oriordan, Rampe, Lloyd
                            HB: Mills, AA, Dawson
                            C: Florent, Kennedy, Jones?

                            FF: Heeney, Franklin, Papley

                            INT:
                            19. McCartin

                              I would say...

Use Pick 4 for a young gun in the draft.

Trade combo of picks 23-50 to trade for a fringe player. (Is Bennell a trade with Freo, or free agent?)

Picks 50+, speculative or academy prospect.

Any free agents like Daniher who want to come, can come.

If we go for Bennel then I think that will get him for free as I doubt that anyone much else is interested. I agree we use the early pick on drafting a young talent. Its been over 20 years since we had a pick this early so let's use it wisely and place our trust in Kinnear's wise judgement.
