The whole Papley thing makes a lot of sense pre and post the info
Carlton have a wide net and maybe the Dogs and Saints do also
They want specific types of players and paps killed it with 37 goals this season
It also makes sense that paps was restless also because his form this year may have increased his contract at a club like saints and or Carlton by 200k pa
Over 3 or 4 seasons that is $600k to $800k pa
——-
Seems like we can all go back to what we were doing now........and remove the Papley possibility from our fun forecasting
"be tough, only when it gets tough"

I don't see much difference between an extra 1 year and an extra 2 years TBH. It puts us in a slightly better position but if he really wants to go is the club going to force him to stay?Comment

You dont get a 2yr trigger into your contract giving you 3yrs of surety to reneg and try to leave or demand more money.
Im sure Sydney would have scope to reward him a bit if he was deemed to be well under.
ASA money can be used to add to a salary.Comment

Correct. Exit interviews mean little if a player hasn't made up their mind.
If Papley wasn't entertaining the idea of a move, wouldn't he have come out by now stating that he's contracted and wants to stay thereby shutting down this rumour?

I'm amazed that people keep mentioning him. He's always been an outside player; we need inside players or really, really good outside players.

I actually thought of him as I was typing but can't think of any other examples.Comment

707 what were your recollections of what Ryan said about that period when he talked to the supporter group? He was pretty forthright IIRCComment

Pick 8 for Papley (the article mentions Carlton willing to giving up their first round pick) is an interesting thought though.
Potential gun midfielder for Papley. I actually would consider that deal.
But Pick 8 has produced absolutely stuff all in the last 10 years. Dyson Heppell the only decent one.Comment

Why would the club seek to trade (as opposed to respond to a request from Papley to be traded) a current young but experienced gun midfielder/forward (for he is far more than a small forward) for a pick that might (but might not) become a gun midfielder in a few years time? Our list profile desperately needs to retain players in Papley's age range. We already have a crop of promising players who will enter their prime in a few years time.Pick 8 for Papley (the article mentions Carlton willing to giving up their first round pick) is an interesting thought though.

I'm glad to hear the club effectively saying Papely is off the trade table. With a developing young list we just can't afford to lose a young gun even for a early draft pick & then having to waste another few years developing that player with no guarantees they'll be good or also get "homesick". At the end of the day draft picks are a lottery and small elite forwards like Papely who can also play midfield don't go grow on trees. Explains why he is in demand.Pick 8 for Papley (the article mentions Carlton willing to giving up their first round pick) is an interesting thought though.

I don't think the club should (or would) seek to trade. However if Papley was to ask for a trade, I think a case could be made that Pick 8 is pretty good value for him.Why would the club seek to trade (as opposed to respond to a request from Papley to be traded) a current young but experienced gun midfielder/forward (for he is far more than a small forward) for a pick that might (but might not) become a gun midfielder in a few years time? What would then stop us trading Pick 8 (and maybe Pick 4) for an absolute star?Comment
