It means that we printed a succession of unfounded rumours, without bothering to check with Papley or the Swans. Now that the story has turned out to be totally baseless, we've thrown in that narky little rider, in order to pretend that our poor journalism had some basis in reality.Comment

Aren't contract extension clauses always an obligation on the employing club? For example, the club is obliged to extend the contract but the player has the option to extend if they chose to do so? If so, then he really only has one more year if he wants out.Good news on the Papley situation, he's triggered a contract extension clause that sees him tied to us till the end of 2023.

Contained in said article is this sentence.....
"Papley quietly extended his deal with the Swans last year for an extra year through to the end of 2021. But that contract also included a trigger clause for an extra two seasons, which he has met."
..... and this one: "He had his post-season exit interview with the Swans this week and did not request a trade out of the club.".
That says it all....not going anywhere at the end of next season or the one after that or the one after that.....etc.

I think you might be right
I thought it was called an “option” when the club can impose/exert the extra year on the player (and I’m not sure if the AFLPA allows those anymoreComment

I’m not sure a player only has the duration of his exit interview to express his desire for a tradeContained in said article is this sentence.....

Yes it's hard to think that if he was really interested in moving that he would not raise it in the exit interview. Certainly good news for us! The situation reminds me of the speculation last year that Parker was on his way to Essendon. Proved to be absolutely baseless but the Melbourne media like to go with fantasy stories that help them sell newspapers.Contained in said article is this sentence.....

Article says he extended contract to include 2021 and then there was a trigger clause, so he has 2 more years rather than one as you suggest?Comment

If Carlton had really been interested in Papley, surely they could have asked his agent when his contract expires? Agents are supposed to know those sorts of things. All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund BurkeComment

Good point Erica. Like Longmire going to North and Parker to Essendon, it was probably another AFL rumour-mill thought bubble that took on a life of its own.Comment
