Who said anything about being a rehab facility? I was rather suggesting that part of the due diligence we do if we are considering signing him is to see if he has successfully sorted out his own rehabilitation already, or at least be well on track (depending on the particular issue).
At the same time, I think a big part of the club mantra (and for many other clubs also) is about developing the whole person and not just the footballer. We support and encourage our players to be the best they can be on and off the field and try to connect them to the opportunities they need.
I don't have a view about whether we should pick up Bennell but I do think we shouldn't write him off on the strength off his involvement in a criminal case as a witness. Even if he has a history of drug use that wouldn't rule him out for me, just be a sign to be more cautious. The question is where is he at now? Do we think on the available evidence he is now able, physically and mentally, to produce some good footy for us and to fit in with our culture and contribute? Plenty of examples of footy players coming from troubled backgrounds and coming good. Need look no further than James Bell. And I applaud us for giving Bell his chance and helping him to overcome the issues he was struggling with.Comment

Good news on the Papley situation, he's triggered a contract extension clause that sees him tied to us till the end of 2023.

And ought to save a lot of space on this forum! He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)Comment

Brilliant! And hilarious! Stops them dead in their tracks I reckon. No wonder there has been no need to comment from our end. Love it! :PAll opinions are not equal. I have to say I hadn't been aware of statements from both Papley (after round 22) and the club (consistently - "the Swans are steadfast he will be at the club next season") that he wasn't going anywhere which is, I thought, why speculation was mounting despite him seeming to be passionate and committed to the club.
What is interesting is this: The 23-year-old has been unsettled in Sydney at times since that contract agreement last year but the club has worked with him to ensure he remains a key part of its future. I'm curious what that means.

How did everyone get it so wrong? Or maybe it wasn't so wrong and it's only since his post-season exit interview that the situation has become clear.
When they talk about triggering an extension clause, I presume they mean at the player's option. If that's right he still had a decision about whether he wanted the extension.
Even still my understanding had been that he was due to fall out of contract at the end of next season, not the following one, let alone three seasons hence! All opinions are not equal. Carlton’s recruiting reminds me of the ad with the two tuna fishermen on the wharf accepting the fish that John West rejectsComment

I reckon we’d really like Patrick Cripps and Brodie Grundy playing for us next year ... How is that a story?
Very happy he appears not to be leaving!
Now to re-sign Jones.Comment

I'm still not as confident about this as everyone on here seems to be. Not sure it changes much except gives us more leverage at the trade table.
I know he doesn't need to, but would love Tom to come out and say he loves Sydney, is staying etc.
Until then, there is still loads of time for him to request a trade.Comment

I was able to obtain several 482 (temporary skilled work shortage) visas to work as 'Carers' for Paps in Sydney, hence, solving the alleged Melbourne girlfriend problem. All is good all around.
Hi Paps! We here you've been lonely in Sydney.Comment

I bet Carlton weren't aware of that trigger clause which ties Papely up with us till 2023. Blues are getting arrogant again thinking they can poach players like they used to do under John Elliot.
Secondly, what constitutes a player being unsettled when looking from the outside? My guess is that the Melb media thinks having a girlfriend in Melbourne = "go home" factor.Comment
