One of the things Ratten was lamenting when he took over was the Saints poor disposal leading to turnovers.

Then they target Zac Jones, go figure

Jones had a 71% DE last year. One of the best of the Swans' midfielders. Jones is the kind of player that gets noticed when he has the ball, so we tend to exaggerate his errors because he's a high risk player.

We will be losing 2 of our pestiest players Jones and Papley. Will Hayward is a bit pesty. The little we've seen of Matt Ling has shown that he's a fairly pesty player as well.

Mitch Cleary on Trade Radio just announced the Tim Kelly trade to West Coast will go through tomorrow. Apparently WC have agreed to part with this year's picks 14 and 24 plus their 2020 1st round. A swap of later picks is also expected. Not bad for Geelong for a uncontracted player! I hope we're just as stubborn with St Kilda for Jones. I'm a bit worried this may inspire EFC to hold onto demanding 2 x top 10 picks from us, but Mitch Clearly did just say if he was the Swans he wouldn't give up picks 5 & 9 for Daniher and risk holding out for him next year as RFA, offering him money EFC couldn't match.

Thanks Beethoven. Don’t get all the criticism of Jones on here

Agree with this -reckon Jones was told to take the game on because he was one of the relatively few with wheels. Will be missed for his hardness.

The talk is Geelong may give WC's pick 24 to St Kilda for Jack Stevens. If that is the case, i wonder if Saints will then on trade that Pick 24 to us for Jones? Mind you some in AFL circles would think pick 24 is too much for Stevens.

Funny how quickly you get tired physically and mentally when you are outclassed.

                  I read pick 33. Which isn’t enough

The Eagles are likely to finish top 4 next year with NicNat back and Tim Kelly in the side, so next year's 1st rounder will likely be close to a pick 20 after all the NGA, FA and academy bid matches. Those 2 first rounders are not much better than a pick 5 (in value points). So Kelly went to WCE for roughly the equivalent of our pick 5 and our 2nd round pick. All things considered, there is no way Daniher is worth close to what Kelly is worth. Only a bad case of the Dodoros will have Daniher playing for Essendon next year. It's not a matter of money. He would be a free agent next year. And if money were a factor, we will save around $800k by not having him on our list next year, putting more money in the kitty for his next contract. By comparison to the Kelly trade, a pick 5 for Daniher is very generous.

I'm not bothered much by whether we use pick 5 or the projected pick 9 for Papley. The field flattens out after pick 2. I mentioned earlier that I wouldn't mind taking Luke Jackson, a mobile athletic ruckman with pick 9 and use our later picks for midfielders, given that Naismith is 27 and very fragile; it's hard to get a top ruckman without paying out big money and there aren't many out there anyway. With Daniher in the side, we will likely see a taller Swans team out on the field next year, a bit like the Giants. All our talls are mobile, so it's easy to do. That permits players like Blakey to play in the midfield, as well as Mills and possibly Lloyd. We should get some quality depth players through trading this year as well. We can reevaluate this after the trade period ends and we see exactly what we have.

Never waste an early pick on a ruckman. Pick 5 needs to be a midfielder or gun forward.

I like Jackson too but I feel that pick 9 is overreaching for a ruck. I still believe that rucks are overrated. West Coast in 2006 was the last side to win the comp with a great ruck. If Jackson was to slide to the second round I'd be all for trading up to grab him. For our first pick (either 5 or 9) take the best available mid (Serong, Flanders, Kemp, Young, Robertson).

I said if we end up holding pick 9. If we have pick 5 I would use it on whoever is left over from Serong, Flanders and Young. Pick 5 would be too early for Jackson. Pick 9 may be too early as well, but with the changes coming this trade period, it's a glaring long term weakness. The midfield is not that thin and only Kennedy is a likely retirement in the next 3 years. With all the other positions well covered, we can concentrate on drafting midfielders the next few years. Quality midfielders can be found in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. We also know that we will be using our early picks on midfielders next year.

I do agree with the general rule about drafting ruckmen early. But Jackson is not a big lumbering ruckman and more of a Tim English type, like an oversized midfielder.

When the AFL put a trading ban on the Swans, they inadvertently created a precedent that can now be used to save the Suns. The AFL should put a 5 year limited trading ban on the Suns. The Suns should be banned from trading out any 1st round draft pick for the next 5 years. That should stop the bleeding. If it's good enough to punish the Swans for nothing, why not use it save the Suns and protect their huge investment in GC.

From Cal Twomey's latest rankings. He has Jackson at #14. Chris Doerre has him going to NM at pick 9, so could miss out anyway, as Calton's pick that we anticipate coming for Papley falls after North's pick.

                            August ranking: 14

It was an enormous end to the season for Jackson, who starred in the WAFL colts competition. He averaged 22 disposals, 33.8 hitouts and also chipped in with three goals in the final four rounds of the under-18 season. The All Australian ruckman powered past all his contemporaries to be the best big man in the draft, but it will still be fascinating to see where he gets drafted, given clubs have generally shied away from taking rucks with early picks. Jackson's ability at ground level, his follow-up at the clearances and presence might make them think otherwise.

Hmmm...except that the Swans weren't banned from trading players out. Just trading them in. (Minor technicality, I know.)
