The mystery is what we have told Danihers management we are prepared to trade ?

For all we know JD could be trying to force the hand of Essendon just like Kelly tried to move to west coast last year

Geelong and west coast didn’t come to terms

We very well might not be able to agree either

For me I would like JD playing Ruck and FF 50/50 through out most games but I suspect trade 9 for paps and 42 should get it done maximum

This saves us serious money on ruckman and gives us a serious FF just about to be in his prime years ie prior to his OP injury he had 108 goals in two seasons 2016/17 plus he is unique in that he can continue probably longer in his career as a ruckman FF if his body holds up

If the bombers dont want to meet us at that arrangement bad luck it’s no big deal

Contracts are protected vs games not played which is good for us

The major issue though if we miss out, is the odds of getting another big forward will be few and far between and that is a major problem I feel for the swans, media, sponsorships, game attendance etc

He's not a free agent.
There are always many considerations, but the gist of it is once a player says he wants to go, is a club going to fight tooth and
nail to keep him against his will?. I'd say no. The other side knows this, and knows they ultimately they won't have to pay the
initial asking price. A compromise will be reached, and when there is only one buyer, it's basically a buyers market. You'd think
      the Swans would know this.

I agree with your premise and have said the same many times. I think a fair deal will be reached for Papley and Jones. It's hard to say about Daniher because we don't know what's been promised behind the scenes and there are so many variables that are difficult to measure.

On one of the "30 for 30" episodes on ESPN there was a great story of an NBA player (I think it was in the 70s) who was
traded during a game to the team he was playing against, and was asked to change uniforms during one of the breaks and
start playing for the team he'd just been traded to. This could be where the AFL is heading. If I remember correctly the
          player refused to do it.

Because, as opposed to working for the players, they seem to be working for the Melbourne clubs and 'little boys who get homesick'......

There are risks/pressures on both sides: If we wait a year to see if he recovers and we can get him for "nothing", there's a strong risk he'll rediscover his love for Essendon and won't want to come. If we get him now, he'll cost more and there's a risk he'll not return to 100% fitness.
He's hasn't fallen out of love with Essendon, he has fallen out of love with the Melbourne lifestyle.....and after yet another year of speculation about his footy future, he will love Melbourne even less. We should leave him there for now.....it won't go against us at season's end and if he indeed breaks down during the season, we will dodge a very expensive bullet.

You would think Essendon might be a bit cranky at Joe D right now. They've been paying him a reported $900K a year to mostly sit around
in the gym doing his rehab and play very little football for two years, and now he says he wants to leave. They've invested in the guy, and if
he gets his body right then someone else (maybe the Swans) will get the benefit of that investment they have made. Sure, the clubs take
their chances with players, but there's nothing to say they have to be happy about the outcome.

This is Harley's big play, high risk, high reward. He wants to be remembered as the guy who took a big gamble that effectively won us a premiership.

I worry that the opposite will be the case.........
A lot of people on here think they know Tom Harley really really well.....I'm not so convinced and will admit that I don't know him at all, besides the fact he was a fine footballer who was handpicked by our illustrious former CEO as his own replacement. Would have thought this was good enough.

Is the negativity and rash predictions, re: what makes him tick, because he came from Geelong and not us?

I believe him. I don't think we planned for or overtly chased Daniher. I think Joe flagged the interest and we sought to make it happen.

I think we're being stereotyped as the raiding Swans, poaching big name forwards. But I think that does not accurately reflect what occurred.
I think it is quite unsurprising that power forwards who want a change of scenery approach the Swans.....after seeing how well it has worked for a few past power forwards who got out of the Melbourne fishbowl for the relative anonymity of Sydney, who would blame them? Fortunately JD chose us, not GWS.....

.....but I still think we should leave him at EFC this year just to prove himself worthy. To recruit him now would not be 'due diligence', it would be irresponsible.

Maybe Nige from Nth Fitzroy could use his contacts in the cafe society to find out about the TH/JD coffee meeting..
