Of course it is Annie but a foreign concept these days, sadly.

Makes you wonder how many times the AFL has attempted this in private with other teams. Gold Coast especially.

          Gill is a deadset @@@@head.

Rather than say " I think GWS and GC should retain players", how about give them the tools to retain players (ie a cap extension) as opposied to taking away those tools (ie a cap extension).

Gill, you caused this problem, you muppet!

I feel a bit weird defending him, but I don't have an issue with Gil's view (or him expressing it). He hasn't said Coniglio should stay at the Giants, just that he'd like him to.

The league has a big problem with players wanting to leave the Northern clubs for the bright lights of Victoria (or to go home to one of the other states). We've been less affected by this than the other three clubs due to being a consistent contender for so long, but our current situation, with Jones unsigned and rumours around Papley, show we are far from immune. Sure, GWS still have a list chock full of raw talent but how many players have they been able (or look like being able to retain) through their entire careers? They've lost Adams, Treloar, Shiel - all very good midfielders now in their primes at other clubs. The midfield they've been able to field in recent weeks looked talented on paper but was largely made up of very young players still a way from their prime, ones who may also chose to leave once they approach their prime. Greene is the only absolute top liner they recruited as a teenager who looks completely committed to playing out his career at the Giants. The test will come with Cameron in a year or so when he becomes a free agent.

I agree with Barry's comment that the league needs to do something, rather than just have Gil make comments like this, but that doesn't mean I think his comments are out of line.

It's completely inappropriate. He lacks self awareness to realise or self control to keep his mouth closed. I just wish he would FO.

Btw i still find our trade ban perplexing. Punishment metered out in absence of any clear rule or breach of it.
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

The trade ban was perplexing at the time, but there was a hint of a (very poor ) reason because the AFL wanted a star forward at GWS instead of us.
It was then made even more perplexing when Richmond were able to recruit the star forward from the GC (Lynch) in almost identical circumstances as us, with no trade ban.

Therefore it is proven completely unfair, and we should seek due compensation (if we have a board with a spine)

Yes, it does still feel like we are owed some kind of reparation. But things don't work that way.

Fitzpatrick threw a tantrum - no logic to it. Purely vindictive.

I agree. I have no problem with Gil issuing this comment. Would be different if he had any power over Coniglio or his decision. Despite being a very powerful figure in the game I don't think he would have any influence whatsoever over Coniglio's destination and wouldn't be stupid enough to try. If he did, then I would have a problem.
All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)

If sydneySwans benefits could be taken away and a trade ban enforced could Gill influence the capacity for gws to keep SC ?

It's possible that the fact that he has made this comment about Coniglio means it's finally starting to dawn on Gill that the
"go home" factor and the "bright footy lights of Melbourne" factor is very detrimental to the northern clubs, and the prospect
of GWS ending up like the Suns will be a disaster that will the AFL will take a very long time to recover from. Unless footy
works out in the northern states in the long run, it's always just going to be half a national code. Just rugby league, and soccer,
and union already are, living on scraps.

I could be wrong, but didn't Gill the dill say something similar about Lynch last year?.
It's his way of sympathizing with the northern clubs without doing anything about it.
