If it comes down to getting a 1st rounder for Papley, I would prefer demanding their 2020 pick rather than pick 9 this year.

Why? His contract would be off our books and they may be offering him more than our contract is worth

We’re probably not really in a position to push too hard. Jones’ out of contract. He can go into the PSD if he wants - although Suns, Dees & Blues ... and Swans ... have picks before the Saints

On Paps.....so much for his loyalty to his beloved 'Bloods'.....it seems money talks. Either that or his girlfriend talks much louder. Whatever the truth is.....it's extremely disappointing.

Agreed. My favourite current Swan. Thought he bled Red and White. Obviously not.

So to summarise what's known so far.

Papley wants to break his contract to go to Carlton. Jones is out of contract and wants to go to St Kilda. Cameron wants to go to Collingwood.

What does everyone think we should expect to get for these players?

Papley: Carlton have picks 9, 41, 46, 73, 82. We won't be looking at those later round picks as they are dross. IMO Carlton must cough up pick 9 and a future pick, plus something extra for taking a contracted and required player. What would probably get the deal done would be pick 9 and a future first-round pick in exchange for Papley and pick 42.

Jones: St Kilda have 6, 57, 69, 79. Again, the later picks are not what we need. I doubt we would get pick 6 because that's likely to go to Fremantle for Hill. I'm expecting St Kilda to give us some combination of future picks, perhaps their future 2nd-round and 3rd-round picks or 2nd-round and 4th-round picks. I don't expect to receive a 1st-round pick for Jones due to his history with injuries and the Tribunal. I think the deal may be Jones for St Kilda's future 2nd-round pick and future 4th-round pick.

Cameron: I'm not expecting to receive much for Cameron here. I've previously mentioned that Cameron and a swap of later round picks between this year's and next year's drafts would probably be sufficient to get the deal done. Cameron and pick 59 to Collingwood for their future third-round pick.

In all of these trades, I'm expecting to see the club aiming hard for future picks. If these speculative trades come to pass, we would trade out Papley, Jones, Cameron, pick 42 and pick 59 for pick 9, Carlton's future first-round pick, St Kilda's future 2nd-round pick, Collingwood's future 3rd-round pick and St Kilda's future 4th-round pick. That would give us a good haul of draft points next year.

I would like to see a player come to us as well. Perhaps pick 9 could be enough to get Daniher to Sydney. Essendon would be keen to receive a first-round pick so they can meet the minimum draft requirement more easily next year. It won't be pick 5, but Essendon may settle for pick 9 and an exchange of picks. More future picks coming our way, perhaps?

Wish we had trade ban now. Resulting Papley, Jones & Daniher staying put

First reaction: oh no, this can't be true!

Second reaction: ah, needs to show girlfriend it's impossible to leave Sydney.

Outcome: girlfriend moves to Sydney (must be some string pullers at the club), they marry, and we all live happily ever after!

Paps is 2 first rounders, cornered now with 1 team on the market, Pick 9 does nothing for at least 3 yrs if they want to stay
Jones is end of 1st or 2 seconds or Go to gold coast in pre season

We get worse next year without sunstantial compensation for those 2

Will Daniher be part of our leadership group or kick close to 37 goals next year? I don't think so. We should hold off on Daniher until 2020 and not trade Papley under any circumstances.

Losing Papley sucks big time, Jones not so much. To put a positive spin on it, if we enter this draft with 3 first rounders or 2 this year and 2/3 next year, we are potentially setting ourselves up for some fun times ahead, maybe necessarily so. I reckon Paps is worth a 1st and a 2nd and I think Jones is worth a 1st.

I agree. Play hardball for both.

We don't have to trade Papley under any circumstances. I don't think he'd spit the dummy if we refused to trade him and I can't see much downside to holding him to his contract. We keep a good player at a bargain price. I'm not worried about the effect it may have on other possible future recruits. So, we only trade him if they really make it worth our while. And pick 9 isn't enough - as someone said above, it means we would have hopes of getting someone else who might be as good... in years down the track. Then again they might not turn out so well. Not worth it. While small forwards can be found cheaply, they mostly aren't as good as Papley. His worth to us is higher than usual because he's signed to a contract at unders. Therefore I reckon that he's worth more to us than them and it just doesn't make sense for them to do a deal that can satisfy us.

With Jones, our position is nowhere near as strong but we can still push for something decent. I would accept the future 2nd and 3rd rounders proposed by ThunderShaker and even send back a fourth rounder if they wanted. If he was still contracted then I definitely would be demanding more than that but, without a contract, our bargaining position is considerably weakened and we can't expect as good a return. It's hard to tell how Saints will go next year. It's feasible that they will rise up the ladder, although I wouldn't go as far as saying likely.

Except that if we play hardball doesn't he end up going through to the pre-season draft? Hello Gold Coast Mr Jones. Maybe I misunderstand that.
