So to summarise what's known so far.

Papley wants to break his contract to go to Carlton. Jones is out of contract and wants to go to St Kilda. Cameron wants to go to Collingwood.

What does everyone think we should expect to get for these players?

The obvious answer is getting COLA back for them And a retention allowance for the 2 Queensland clubs.

Not going to happen though. The Big Melbourne clubs wouldn’t be able to take players from the northern clubs year after year.

Btw congratulations to Lynch, Prestia & Caddy. Maybe next year O’Meara, Treloar or Mitchell can emulate the great deeds of these players & Yeo, Boyd & Nankervis.

The Swans have a history of helping players get to their preferred clubs. If Jones is out of contract and wants to go to St Kilda, then off to St Kilda he will go. It's just a matter of striking a satisfactory deal.

I'm curious why the AFL Commission decided to award the Suns pick 1 rather than the pick immediately following their first round pick. Practically, it makes no difference. It shows that they are clearly acknowledging the Suns are needing a degree of assistance equivalent to pick 1 this year (and all the rest) rather than just some first round pick (a bit like when they started in the competition and got priority picks in the compromised draft, I suppose) and is transparent. However, does it also set a precedent that perhaps didn't need to be set? Imagine awarding pick 1 if someone else had picked up the spoon and were being deprived of their pick 1 - they would be apoplectic! (True, if the Suns hadn't 'won' the spoon by such a big margin they might not need the assistance - but imagine if they were basically the same club, in the same position but their 1 point losses in round 1 and round 8 had gone the other way and been one point victories - they would still be the same basket case, with the same percentage but Melbourne would have finished bottom.)

Not exactly, if we can't come to an agreement with St Kilda, Jones has to nominate for the draft.

Very risky, as every club will have a chance to nab him for nothing.

St Kilda has pick 6 and then 57; and trust me someone will pick him up before 57.

Therefore St Kilda must trade with us; we could pick up Jones with our pick 51 if we wanted screw with him.

St Kilda will use future picks to secure him.

Losing Papley sucks big time, Jones not so much. To put a positive spin on it, if we enter this draft with 3 first rounders or 2 this year and 2/3 next year, we are potentially setting ourselves up for some fun times ahead, maybe necessarily so. I reckon Paps is worth a 1st and a 2nd and I think Jones is worth a 1st.

Don't see why if Cameron wants to go to Collingwood, we can't get Sier in a straight sway?

Totally off Daniher; we should target Ben McKay, twin brother of Harry at Carlton.

201cm amd 95kg; his development has being stalled at Norths, mainly due to Scott.

Yes he has sign an extension, but is injury free and won't cost us more than a second round.

The Suns need decent experienced players, quality development coaches and a vastly improved player retention program.
As for Papley. I'm sure his girlfriend works in an industry that exists in Sydney as well as Melbourne, so lets get her a job in Sydney! If he does leave then a high first round pick this year plus something good in next years draft also.

Biggest issue facing the 4 northern clubs is retention. Has been for a long time and will be for the foreseeable future.

While these clubs are up they will hold those type of mid range/young players that I highlighted earlier. But as most know the retention problem will continue when clubs fall down the ladder and the issue will continue to happen until the issue is addressed & those 4 clubs will continue to have to overpay players.

It’s no coincidence that GC have TPP issues when players can play in Melbourne for less but receive third party payments that can boost their income above what a northern club can pay.

AFL should now seriously reconsider the GC experiment, the time is right to relocate to Tassie.

Tassie Devils sounds good, there is a possibility the fed gummint may invest in this too.

There is already a good AFL supporter base there and they have been screaming out for a team for years.

The Gold Coast is just a holiday destination and money spinner for property developers. Any AFL supporters there already have their team and will not change while they are waiting to drop off the perch.

Wish we had trade ban now. Resulting Papley, Jones & Daniher staying put

The VFL would probably ensure that it's works against us regardless. Originally, we weren't allowed to bring in a player or a draft pick for an exiting player. The VFL would probably hold us to that. The Jetta trade only occurred after the players association complained that it restricted players wanting to leave us. As a result we were allowed to trade players out but only for a comparable player. Draft picks weren't allowed.

I remember suggesting somewhere the Tasmanian Devils as an expansion AFL team as far back as about 1989, as a part of a two-team expansion that included an Adelaide Crows side at least a year before the Crows were considered seriously.

So a Tasmanian Devils side gets a big tick from me.

There's a difference between assisting an out-of-contract player to reach their club of choice and a required, contracted player trying to do the same.

We have three players seeking trades, and all are different.

Cameron - he's out of contract and he has played one game. One. He wants more opportunities at Collingwood, so it's quite reasonable to suggest that a token trade can be made that nets us a future draft pick.

Jones - he's out of contract but in our best 22. We could help him to reach the Saints but St Kilda won't be getting him cheaply. The Saints' future second-round pick should be included in any trade unless we can convince them somehow to give up a first-rounder.

Papley - this is where we can make the Blues pay through the nose if they really want him. Contracted players won't be released from their contract without a very good price.

The Jones trade is the one that is in greatest doubt. Do we extract a fair trade price or do we end up paying unders?

My take on these requested trades...

Cameron - Totally acceptable, given very little opportunity with us . Trade him to his preferred club.

Jones - Out of contract. Trade him to his preferred club so long as they come to the party with a reasonable trade...We have some leverage but shouldn't over play it.

Papley - Contacted for 4 years. Either no trade, or trade to the highest bidder in Victoria. If it's moving to Melbourne he wants, we can try and facilitate that...but...

there is no way he gets to choose which club....Highest bidder or nothing.

I must say that I am very disappointed in Papley. He signed a contract with several years on it and now wants to walk away. Losing him will certainly hurt us in the short term as he is one of our few goal scorers and he is even part of our leadership group from memory. It shows what the game has become.

Having said all of that, if we get a good offer for him then we really need to consider it carefully. Having unhappy players on your list is not a good situation.
