Game on now ... Essendon will be fuming at the audacity of a Daniher asking to be traded elsewhere. I predict the trade will go down to the deadline as they try and extract the absolute maximum out of us. My view is one top 10 pick Is fair.

So, originally I was against JD coming to us but now I have let go of the emotion (hard to do being a 50+ years supporter) and see the absolute get he would be.

1: do you not think Swans haven't learnt from previous trades, of course we have

2: our medical would allow us to propose a sensible contract regarding his injury risk and performance based outcomes written into it with clauses and triggers galore

3: if he comes good re injury he is a much bigger part of us heading towards our next premiership, far far more than a small goal sneak

4: quite clearly I don't know whether the Paps rumours are true or not, regardless I would wish him well and hope he stays

5: greater insight than any of us has is at play, so sit back folks, enjoy the ride, respect people's ability to live their lives and if a mega watt star like JD wishes to come to us we will be cautious and grab that rarest of players.

6: thank you all for being so entertaining in the off season. People spewing with outrage over all the rumours is hysterical.

I’d say a trade has been organised already in principle. Most of what you see in the media this late is posturing for the trade, expect 1st round n a second round pick for him. Very very doubtful he announces anything if his manager doesn’t believe it gets done.

It's game on now. There is no doubt we will try and do whatever it takes to get Joe into the club now that he has expressed a desire to come to us. I just hope that we hold onto at least 1 of our top 10 picks in the process (assuming we now trade Papley for pick 9), however I suspect that if it comes down to the final hour we will desperately offer both of them.

We just better not give them 25 as well or we will just come off as a totally weak desperate club that others will take advantage of in the future!

From what I’ve read about previous trades recently I’d say a 1st & 2nd will do it. Pretty similar to Hogan.

I’d offer next years first & this years 2nd. Essendon will counter with 2 firsts then it’ll probably end up with this years first and 2nd.

Why don’t we offer them Tom Papley and a second rounder?

Papley is basically pick nine if traded to Carlton. You would rather keep it and use next years first due to academy picks next year as the first will get eaten up quickly.

                  Scenario 1 give up pick 9(Papley trade) & 25
Use pick 5 in draft lose next years first due to academy players. Gain 2 academy players & Daniher. Theoretically 4 top players

                  Or

Scenario 2 give up next years first & pick 25.
Use pick 5 & 9 in this years draft. Gain 2 academy players & Daniher. Theoretically 5 top players.

I’d go with scenario 2. Just my opinion though

If we trade our first pick next year , we may struggle to get both of the academy boys if they get bid on in the first round though...

                      Joe
11 games. 2 years. Osteitis Pubis.
                      Not worth pick 5

                      Tom
Coming into his prime small forward. Probably worth pick 9
4 year contract. Blues want him. Demand more.

We can’t always be the nice guys at the trade table.

I very much doubt it. They’ll use a lot of later picks. From who I’ve spoken it’s not a great draft so it’s no real lose. It’s the discount that makes it possible.

Use next years first, we already know who we're getting next year and reckon we'll be getting Saints 2020 second for Jones, helps us with points, helps Saints do the trade when they have no currency.

Just dreading having to deal with that show pony Dododoro. We can't be blackmailed into the trade at any cost, we must have told Daniher we'll get it done if reasonable, otherwise revisit in 2020.

Not happy, this has a feeling of disaster to me, should not be two top 10 picks for an injured player. This is what happened to his older brother Darcy, it has a familiar ring to it

Made his AFL debut on 4 May 2008 against Port Adelaide and played in the next two games before an injury ended his season. He played three games in 2009 before being injured again. Daniher retired from professional football in August 2011 due to ongoing groin problems.

One first rounder MAX! or walk away until RFA next year

I will be absolutely amazed if we dont split the pick 5 into pick 7 and pick 26 with Freeo (equal value and Freeo will jump at it I think)

That is the fairest solution to this jigsaw and has a good precedent

The way kinnear beatson discussed the draft keeping our pick 25 could be golden and could be Just as fruitful as a pick 6-15 given the drop off in talent after picks 1-4

Then the bombers get our pick 7 and pick 26

Remembering we might still get pick 9ish for paps and maybe a pick 20-30ish for Jones

My preference is to keep jones and paps (especially paps)

                            ———-

Last season we saw the following :

“Fremantle secured Hogan and Pick 65 after sending Pick 6 and Pick 23 to Melbourne, while they also secured Rory Lobb from GWS Giants”

“The Giants acquired Pick 11 and Pick 19 from the Dockers in exchange for Lobb, as well as Pick 14, 43 and 47”
"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Yeah ok . So your plan requires us to swap out our virtually all our third and fourth round picks this year for next years ? I suppose that might work but there is still a risk it wouldn’t be enough ( depending of course on how high the bids come in for Campbell and gulden )

We shouldn't make any offer for Daniher. Period. I wouldn't even offer pick 60 for him. He will do more damage than good to the team next year regardless of fitness. We now know he wants come to Sydney. OK. Let's talk next year when you're a free agent. That's the only way we win in this deal.

We have plenty of young key KPPs that need senior playing time. And we need to find a mix of players and positions that works for us. There will be a fair bit of experimenting to do. Daniher locks down and limits our options in this regard. We are likely to lose Papley and Jones. We should focus on recruiting midfielders.

Daniher will create a Nankervis/Cameron type situation, where quality players will seek opportunities elsewhere for lack of opportunity.
