I'm going to be accused of having no life posting this ponder on a Friday night but here are my thoughts on next year's best 22 (certain assumptions are made):
B Mills Reid Rampe
HB Dawson Aliir Lloyd
C Blakey JPK Florent
HF Heeney Franklin McCartain
F Taylor Daniher Hayward
Foll Sinclair Parker Hewett
Int Rowbottom Cunningham COR Ronke

I think it's actually not a bad looking side. If JPK can regain consistent form, we get continued improvement from our young guns and we have a better run on the injury front, then the only way is up.

That's what I want too. Daniher can eff off. I'm sure he's a lovely young man but he looks to be injury-rooted. He's played a quarter of his last two seasons, when he should be in his physical prime.

And as for this from the article a previous poster linked to:

The answer is Of course not. Essendon have show themselves over nearly 20 years to be the single worst club to negotiate with, and far the most fantastical in their demands. Even the above utterly ludicrous trade would not be enough to satisfy that pea-brain Dodoro. I expect he will be demanding (with a straight face) at least 8 first round draft picks this year and 2-3 from next year. For someone who scarcely gets on the park and sprays the ball from 20m when he does. The guy has no comprehension of what "negotiation" means. What a knob. I will seriously give up my membership if we go even close to a deal like this.

Yes, clearly in my view.

He just had surgery on his groins from the same surgeon who operated on Menzel and Buddy. Menzel reckons he's as fit as he's ever been. If we get Daniher and he gets fit, we'll have two of the best three forwards in the comp.

It's all posutring from Dodoro, last year he was similarly presenting a false bravado when trying to negotiate the Shiel to Essendon trade. He was adamant for most of the trade period that the Bombers wouldn't part with 2 first rounders and finally in the last few hours he crumbled and acquiesced to the Giants's demands.

Yep, that posturing is designed to put pressure on us to part with pick 5. I'm sure Harley et al know that.

I am starting to get a really bad feeling that if we trade Papley we will send our pick 25 with him as well for their pick 9. If that happens it will be another example of us getting absolutely fleeced and bent over with a trade!

We do not have to trade Papley, just like Essendon do not have to trade Joe if they choose not to so we must take the hard stance with Carlton and say if you want Papley then it's pick 9, take it or leave it!

Essendon are pushing for a player to be involved in any deal to send Joe Daniher to Sydney after Bombers' list manager Adrian Dodoro described the key forward as "irreplaceable" on Friday. While Daniher will leave a big hole in Essendon's forward line, they are not necessarily wedded to a key forward as a replacement for him and are focused more on quality.

While a suitable Sydney player prepared to make the move would be the easiest option, Essendon are open to gaining a player from another club brokered by the Swans or Daniher's management. This does not mean, however, that Sydney's pick five or Carlton's pick nine - put on the table for Tom Papley by the Blues - would not be part of any potential deal, with the Bombers determined to maximise their return for their key forward.

Otherwise they have made it clear throughout they will hold Daniher to his contract with Dodoro confident there would be no negative fallout from the trade request if that occurred.

The Age have also suggested we should take the pick 9 Carlton are offering for Papley, as that's overs and we won't get a better offer.

Dodoro really does want to bend us over on the deal, a player and a first round pick. Daniher is "irreplaceable" but they'll take another type of player than a key forward in a trade for him. I think he's under real pressure. And he's really saying that the Bombers think they are in their premiership window, so need a player not picks, which would take time to develop.

I have a left field suggestion, which I'm sure would be howled down. We give them Josh Kennedy and pick 9 (from Papley). They need a Kennedy type now. We aren't really going to contend in 2020, and need to find a replacement for him anyway. Bite the bullet now and give him to the Bombers... Dodo can say he got his pound of flesh from us. Win-win-win.

I saw that article as a loosening from The Age, as they'd previously suggested pick 5 (definite) possibly plus pick 9. Now it's pick 5 or 9. I think we're holding out on pick 5, as we should.

The only players of any value I'd be happy to trade are Papley, Jones or Reid.

+1 The club should more than aware of Essendon's trading reputation and thus are well prepared for this. The fact that the deal hasn't been done yet gives me some hope they're sticking to whatever they had planned to give up for him and prepared to walk away if necessary.

I rate Papley very highly and don't think Pick 9 alone is enough for a player of his ilk with a 4 year contract (their 2020 2nd rounder should also be included). Just can't stand the thought of him wearing a Blues guernsey. Which is why I hope we're also prepared walk away from this deal in the best interests of the club (not Papley's) as they've been stating.

I also prefer Jones to remain but being uncontracted and having nominated St Kilda, i've resigned he's out and we extract fair compensation for him, particularly that the Saints have now armed themselves with 2 x1st round picks. (i.e. Jones + pick 42 for their Pick 18. That pick 18 is offered for Daniher. Take it or leave it).

How to future proof our 2020 squad to be exceedingly better then our 2019 ?????

So we have somewhat replaced our 4 greats who have retired via internal development / similar roles in part

Grundy - Melican / McCartin
Macca - Dawson
Jack - rowbottom inside outside and Forward
Smith - Oriordan / Fox

Jones - ? Florent takes over the inside outside role plus Blakey moves to more wing time for florent

Paps - ? Goal scoring wise JD fits the bill but different roles obviously and we all want paps to stay plus JD would be lethal

I feel we are a long way short though of being significantly a better team in 2020

One option:

Pick 5 is worth 1,878 pts

I still think we can make our list of players so much stronger not using pick 5 in this years draft and instead split pick 5

I think besides JD and fringe role players like Lewis Taylor and Riley Knights we must be working on another key player / midfielder at least ie who can minimum be in our best 18 and a top 10 best and fairest type player

PLUS if we could bundle up another midfielder at say Essendon, that is an emerging midfielder, with a few pre seasons, some AFL game experience and an important role for us for many years ahead ie dylan clarke

Geelongs draft picks 14 and 17 equals 2,186 pts so we would need to add say 300pts which is pick 48/49 ish on pts...so we give also pick 44 as well as pick 5

Then we would have the approx draft picks

9 from Carlton
14 from geelong
17 from Geelong
