Ruthless? I wouldn't have thought the picks we got back were really impressive. Yes they both ended up having average to poor years in the end but they were reasonably big name players that went out for not much back in.

We basically dumped them and their (entire in the case of Hanners) salaries. It was not about getting picks, it was about clearing them from our list. It was the manner in which they were encouraged to leave the club, despite being contracted, that was ruthless.

I am a new poster... but have read all the talk re trading.

For what its worth, our humble CEO needs to take a course in negotiating. He is constantly allowing the narrative surrounding Papely, Jones, and dare I say it Daniher, be skewed against the Swans by letting the likes of Essendon and Carlton dictate terms. He isn't forthright enough to say that Paps as 4 years to run on his contract in his discussions with Carlton, and thus the paradigm surrounding his move is completely different to that of Daniher (who has a further one). I feel he has backed himself into a corner that he will not be able to get out of, and may want to save face in doing a deal for Daniher almost at any cost. I understand the discussion about Daniher's potential, but if you look at the stance that Dodoro has adopted for Essendon, we should be doing the same and more with Papley. As much as I think that Dodoro is harsh in his approach, I wish that he was our chief negotiator, and not Harley.

Having said all this, the way you approach a negotiation is by setting a high value from which you can only come down. Harley appears to have set too low a bar, and in all my experience he will not be able to trade up.

Great first post Syd76......except maybe for the last bit. Harley hasn't set any bars at all yet, has he? I'm not aware of him saying just about anything.....which, I'll admit, is bloody frustrating and does lead to fearful speculation.

True we dumped the salaries, but I thought we could have got a bit more back (higher draft pick) for at least Hanners considering his stellar career (All Australian when injury free 2 years prior, same as Daniher! Lol) and was also still contracted, plus the Saints wanted to finally land a "big fish".

I just thought we should have done a bit better.

Watching the trade game replay on 7 plus and that snake Goddard gives me the @@@@s! Continually talking up how Essendon must demand pick 5 & 9 for Daniher because of his "potential" yet when asked what's Papley is worth in isolation states possibly a late first round but more likey a second rounder...

Can't stand TV personalities that can't leave behind their bias due to their past playing days!

But Freo dont have to trade Hill ! And it’s not like he is homesick and wants to go home . He IS home , he was traded their already at his request , and now he’s changed his mind ? All too familiar, and while I certainly can’t blame anyone for wanting to live in Melbourne ( wink ), he can choose to do so once he has honoured his contract. Freo now aren’t going to get close to the deal they wanted ( which was never going to happen ) or even the deal they balked at ( 6 and a third rounder ). Keep him . As we should keep Papley , and Essendon should keep Joe. If clubs don’t make a united stand on this soon contracts will become completely useless ( well even more than they already are ).

I think ‘astute’ is a more appropriate term for those trades than ‘ruthless’.

Apparently Dan Butler is leaving Richmond. Wants to go to St Kilda. Carlton mentioned as well in case Papley can't come. Maybe Tom will have to stay, as well as Joe.
