Is it just me, or does Cody Weightman remind one of Isaac Heeney? Something about his facial expressions, smile and demeanour really recalls Heeney to me.

Market forces at work. The kids may not yet be worth the dollars but they will be and you can't risk losing them to another club that is willing to invest in their potential.
A couple of years ago North came to prise Heeney away. Their crazy big offer no doubt compelled us to significantly up our offer and pay a high price for a talented kid. Andrew Ireland more or less said as much at some point (his exit interview?). Would you have had us just let Heeney go? We couldn't. That would have been dumb. But it reduces the $$ we have to pay the rest of our list.All opinions are not equal. Gold Coast are in a difficult place, just their way of tackling retention. If this paying draftees big money for third and fourth years is causing any pain to the Melbourne clubs, good, they created this situation.
I think we're all hoping that Gold Coast can finally start a climb up the ladder and become a desirable club to be drafted to as there are a lot of pluses for a player on the Gold Coast including the weather in winter. Now if you were drafted to the new Tasmanian team ..........Comment

We seem to have given up, for the time being, on trying to work out who we are going to pick up at 5/6 in the draft . What else is there to say!! Well, as I see it, we cross off 1,2,3 then if we indeed go for the next best player we should have three names on our selectors' list which seems at the moment is likely to be Young, Serong and Flanders. So we just take the one that is left after Melbourne and Adelaide pounce. If Melbourne were to go strategic and take Jackson we would have to toss up between. two.
Green alas would be the perfect one for us. Young would be good but not meeting our need for a big bodied classy mid. Serong would be good, especially being a Swan supporter, but another small. Flanderss would be good too, a bit more of a Heeney type perhaps. Hmmm ....not easy!

I know it’s a bit late to reply to this thought but...regarding the length of contract for the mid season draft, the answer is simple...contracts are only allowed till the end of the season - therefore there will be no early poaching of kids from the November draft and clubs will HAVE to use the mid season draft as it is intended ie. to fulfill a pressing need. Also this means that any potential stain on a young guy’s reputation (for getting delisted, effectively) would not happen. If anything their standing would be enhanced. This only came about because of clubs going “OMG what if all 3 of our mature age Ruckman are injured.....?” So, anyway, problem solved. ????"I'll acknowledge there are more talented teams in the competition but I won't acknowledge that there is a better team in the competition" Paul Roos March 2005Comment

Who are we taking? Seems to be the most open top of draft (ignoring the Gold Coast picks) that I can remember.
Jackson is suddenly being talked about as a top 5, are we into him as well? How does the GWS/Green scenario play out? Will GWS manage to get pick 3 off the Dees? Is Kemp's ACL going to push him out of centention? So many questions.
I am however confident we're prepared for any circumstance and that pick 5 will bring another high quality player and person to the club. It's the other three picks that are intriguing, I for one am glad we secured another useful pick this year in the Jones trade.Comment

If Dees are into Jackson as alleged they may think he’ll still be around at 6 and do the deal with GWS which screws us.
But I wonder if GWS are also into Jackson given their ruck situation, which makes a swap with us much safer for Melbourne.Comment
