As a side issue to the Rampe goal post thing, my stepson reckons the siren went before Myers marked the ball. I've watched the moment a few times and feel the mark and siren might have happened simultaneously. Can anyone with superior technology tell which came first? Essendon might have actually had a shot for goal that they shouldn't have.

Nanoseconds in it on the replay - so the mark is correct call. Plus the tv mikes will pick up sound before the umps hear it (speed of sound & all that…)

Reckon Rampe escaped a bullet & I’m wondering what might have happened if the kick went closer to that goal post?

The happiest man at the footy was Ludwig. He is over from Thailand with his wife and stepson, and I drove up from Melbourne to meet him for the game. He was almost delirious after he game. They did suffer with the cold weather. I have to say I have been going to the footy for over 50 years in Melbourne and that was the coldest I have ever felt.

On the game; the difference I saw was much better skills and less unforced turnovers. I think this also contributed to Parker's new found form with players lifting around him which meant Essendon had a lot more issues to deal with. We got our pressure game back and Essendon seemed always under pressure. In previous games we have had many players with under 10 possessions for the game; this week only 4. Greater consistency/contribution across the team proved decisive.

I think it happened like this:

In the last quarter with 7:05 to go Sam contested a pack mark that resulted in Hayward’s pickpocket goal. Watching it frame at a time he lands on his left leg but proceeds to fall initially onto his left hip before rolling onto his back. At 6:28 to go, Reid can be seen in the corner of the shot rubbing his left hip. 6:16 to go he is rubbing the front of the top of his thigh a few seconds later he is positioned toward the centre of the ground walking ok but looking like he wants to come off, but a second later a close up shows him with a flexed posture at his hips (often implicating a groin or hip flexor). 6:02 to go and Jude commentates that “Sam Reid is coming off, hobbling”. 5:44 to go seen supine on the boundary with Matt Cameron starting to asses what looks to be either at or just anterior/forward of his greater trochanter - looking potentially like a contusion/“corky” rather than a strain of the hip flexor. The trochanter is quite superficial, and prone to contusions if you land on them. The bursa can or ITB can be easily irritated. At 4:24 to go in the last quarter they cut to Sam laying in his right side and using what looks to be a handheld massage machine on the greater trochanter of the left hip. 4:08 Reid on the boundary rubbing his own proximal lateral thigh at (just) above the greater trochanter while abducting/externally rotating a little. 0:19 seconds to go he is standing & walking boundary side (though he promptly sits). Standing again after the siren. Walking onto the ground ok after the final miss. No noticeable antalgic gait, no ice, no crutches (but they wouldn’t have had much time to bother with that during a frenetic finish). So I’d hypothesise a mild contusion (based on about 10-15 seconds of scrutinised footage - for what that’s worth, which isn’t a lot but it was at least fun attempting to diagnose).

Now that was a great game. Never more than two goals in it and great to see McCartin haul in some big time contested marks
where and when it mattered, and with Blakey showing how in a few years time, and with a bit of time in the gym, we might have a couple
big guys who can win a game off their own boot.

It was a definite throw and they scored their last goal with it. I think they had about 4 goals from free kicks last night. Some were there but a couple were charities - like the one against Haywood.

Great effort by the team last night.

It was a huge increase in effort and skill from the previous couple of weeks.

Things that are not so good - Reid looks injured again, Heeney is struggling and if he is injured then needs to be rested, Jack very very quiet and did nothing.

But its great to see a win at the SGC - been a while.

On the Myers mark. It seemed identical to the McCartin mark at the end of the 2nd Q. We were in the Trumper Stand and Tom's mark seemed to be clearly before the siren as was Myers.

Like everyone I really enjoyed getting the win, particularly at the SCG. Even if it was a strangely unfamiliar experience.

Agree too about Blakey, McCartin, COR and other inexperienced players showing great promise.

I want to compliment the coaches on how we denied Essendon their running game. Hewett did a great job on Shiel. I thought Fox was playing on Saad at one point. They were forced to kick down the line most of the game and rarely ran it through the corridor. I remember several occasions where an Essendon running half back was forced to stop and go sideways or backwards (or get tackled) due to the excellent Swans defence.

As an aside we only had 41 inside 50s for the match. Yet managed 22 scoring shots.

That was great wasn't it? Just needed enough of the young blokes to get it together on the same day.

I thought Dawson was really good, also McCartin & Blakey. Thought Fox and COR did enough and had some good moments. Barely sighted Shiel all night, good job by Hewett.

The game won't win any awards for scoring or skills, but a good grind-it-out win.

Judging by social media today, the Rampe incident will run all week. Unless some other incident over the weekend replaces it. I didn't see it until this morning but if they'd applied the letter of the law...lucky to get away with it. Anyway, just evens up that ridiculous "played on" call, even the Bombers fans around me thought it was rubbish
