Further re Myers kick for goal after the siren - looking at the footage there seems to have been one Swans player on the mark and a second close behind who ran back & forth to try to distract Myers. There was Rampe up the post - and Jack on the goal line with Heeney not far in front of him, those two hardly being the giants of the team. The rest of the Swans players stood around watching.
Surely there should have been one player on the mark jumping around enthusiastically, the six tallest players on the goal line, and the rest of the team in a horizontal line running back and forth close behind the man on the mark?
In other words, shouldn’t they have done everything they could within the rules to firstly put Myers off his shot; and secondly to touch the ball if it looked like going through for a goal?
Instead they relied on Spiderman + Myers not having a strong enough kick. Fortunately at least the latter of these proved effective.
And if the Rampe situation was completely reversed and the Swans were 5 points down with Buddy kicking after the siren, his radar was off and it fell a little short, but say Fantasia was climbing the goal post while Buddy was approaching his kick, during his kick and while the ball was in flight - if the umpires didn’t award the free kick to us, can you honestly tell me there wouldn’t be a melt down on RWO that the “VFL” aren’t biased cheats who have a vandetta against us yadda yadda yadda?
Heck, the umpires “miss” a tiggy touchwood chopping of the arms when we’re down by 7 goals and a bunch of people on here promptly post a plethora of vitriolic conspiracy theory rants.
Just saying, that there is a black or white rule and by the letter of the law we would not have been hard done by if it was enforced - as if we were in Essendon’s situation I confidently suspect that many on here wouldn’t be so tolerant.
I think only Tadhg Kennelly could honestly claim to be an individual who would take the loss based on a sensible decision since he - as a coach - didn’t enforce a situation in the NEAFL grand that could have put us right back in it, because we really deserved to lose to a better side on the day.
Of our tall players Reid and McCartin were on the bench I believe Sinclair was the one who touched it at the end with Aliir and Melican amidst a big pack of players who were watching but only because it was clear the ball wasn’t going to make it
"For me, it's a bit analogous to a guy who's a metre over the mark, [the umpire] says, 'come back or it's 50', and the guy comes back. If it doesn't, it's a free kick. That seems to be a very practical response.
"People will get into the technicality of what the rule says, but if he stayed there, it would have been a free kick."
Probably lucky it was Umpire Andre Gianfagna and not umpire Brent Wallace to tell Dane to “get down!”

I note that you cut out the last part of my post which made it clear I had my tongue firmly in my cheek.

I’ll remove your post from my reply as it wasn’t specifically directed at you. More the general attitude that it didn’t matter because it didn’t affect the result of the kick. It did affect the result of the game was my point and that we wouldn’t have been happy if we had lost that way (deserved or not)
Really enjoyed Bartel's commentary - great insights, balanced.
He is good....compared to his co commentators. I remember thinking the same about Ling in his early days on Seven and we all know what happened there. Let's hope Jimmy keeps his head and stays the same.
If Rampe had the ball and dropped it/failed to return it to his opponent then it was 50. Otherwise Rampe was under no obligation to return the footy. In fact, leaving the ball on the ground allowed his team mates to get into defensive position. The umpire had no right to touch the footy in those circumstances and advantaged Essendon by returning the ball.

Bartel very good but don't know how he puts up with the brown nosing of Gil's brother
On the Myers mark. It seemed identical to the McCartin mark at the end of the 2nd Q. We were in the Trumper Stand and Tom's mark seemed to be clearly before the siren as was Myers.
Interesting.....because McCartin had to kick it before the siren, which he was deemed by Meredith to have not done so. It wasn't a question of whether he 'marked' it before the siren.
In regard to the Myers mark, I thought it was almost simultaneous with the siren, if not slightly before it. Lucky he missed....
PS: Actually, I just watched a replay of the last play multiple times and now believe the siren went first. Myers should not have been allowed to take the shot.

Thanks. I agree with you. We and Rampe are very lucky to have got away with an act of total stupidity. I trust Longmire has read the riot act to Rampe.

An 8 - 24 free kick count in favour of Collingwood might take a bit of focus off Spider-Dane.
My stepson was at the game and said the umps ruined a cracker!

Or given him a rule book to read with an oral and written test to be administered before our next game.
