It's sad to hear that we're having salary cap problems with such a young team. What's going to happen when we make the finals?
Preuss picked GWS ahead of us, Martin is too old for a bottom 3 club and I guess we didn't see Wright as a ruckman?

This trade period is getting depressing. If there is truth to us offloading AA only to bring in Hickey, then my optimistic nature and faith in KB is also on the trade table. And then there is Hewitt. Arghh! Feels like we're losing Jones all over again.

Id make Alir play ruck unhappy before I dumped him to Port to bring in a crab like Hickey on a 3yr deal

KB can go if this happens, a few yrs of crap now

Yeah it is a touch. Not that I was expecting much from us but surely we can pick up a battler like Hickey without having to move on guys like AA and Hewett. Our salary cap issues, if they are true, are hugely concerning considering our list profile. Bottom 3 clubs shouldn’t be having cap issues, even with 1 monster salary on the books. We’ve hardly traded in anyone of note in years! Even allowing for some perhaps overpaid youngsters I still find it astonishing and really poor management form our club if true.

I agree. When I compare us to the Cats, Blues and Saints I am flabbergasted that we can be under cap pressure, especially as one of the bottom teams.

Re Hickey, he is still contracted and apparently wanted by the Weagles. Plus he is 29 so will want a decent contract given this could be his last. I suspect he is one of very few ruckmen who is even willing to entertain coming to us - I'm sure we have approached many and been rejected. So if we want him, we're going to have to pay overs. Personally, I would just persist with Sinclair, Amartey, McLean, Aliir and Reid. Hickey is not going to add too much but is likely going to cost way over. Surely were not that desperate.

Its funny how we always have to pay overs, yet are maybe dumping 2 contracted players

Id keep both and risk what happens to both of them next year

And overs for Hickey..... if Sydney wasnt knocking he would be without a team when West Coast delist him next year

Man, this negativity is like driving freaking rain. Can we just wait to see what happens before we're firing Kinnear?

I predict both Aliir and Hewitt to stay, with Hickey to come in - as do many pundits. However the resigning of Ling and especially Amartey before list sizes are announced is definitely odd...

I think we’ve decided to try to move AA and Hewett on.

                      (1) because we need to save some money. I’m assuming the 10% cut in the TPP cannot apply to Buddy, so that’s $150k we have to find right there.

Those are two players that have some currency (or not in George’s case) and where we have cover on our list.

                      (2) to fill at least one hole on our list. Unfortunately out of Sinclair, Amartey, McLean, Aliir and Reid, we don’t have a genuine ruckman and we need one for round one next year.

Whether Hickey is the best available option, or even any better than Sinkers, I guess we’ll find out.

                      (3) to improve our draft hand. Assuming we get more for AA than we pay for Hickey.

Hopefully it all pans out wonderfully.
I know the idea is it improving the list through sensible list management. I get we have an excess of decent defenders and a dearth of ruckmen, and that our game plan might not suit Kennedy, Parker and Hewitt in the midfield anymore, but the main issue I have is that we are looking trading out two players who we have put a number of years into developing, have good experience, and are, at their best, very good footballers. And a salary cap...WTF is going on there? Buddy, sure, a once in a generation player that we have all loved watching, but him aside we must be pretty loose with our money.

I for one are happy with Ling, showed enough for a 1yr deal

Would like to see him fit with a good preseason

                          He obviously hasnt cost much

We have to retain some number of players on the brink of delisting to balance out the salary cost of top end players. These players are just happy to have a job. With a salary cap that's mostly absorbed by a limited number of players, something has to give at the other end of the scale, meaning that fringe players and younger developing players have to bear the burden of the cost of retaining the top end players needed to compete at a high level. This bubble seems to be bursting more often and at more clubs. I haven't heard much talk about a salary cap reduction in recent days. Just talk about average players getting big paychecks.

Cap coming down 10% apparently. Not sure how it's applied and to who.

Can't believe we've got cap problems, many teams have players on $1m plus

Players taking a 10% pay cut, plus lists cut by 2 (around 4%) might translate to a 15% reduction in salary cap. I assume Buddy won’t change so that creates a $150k problem.

Don’t know if Buddy’s salary was reduced this year or not?
