I'm not against Aliir going. He was viewed by our match committee as a fringe player and this was unlikely to change, despite the feelings of RWO posters.
What I'm disappointed about is the trade. Future 2nd rounder? We're most probably going to hand it over to WC for Hickey or Vardy, both of whom will likely be delisted when their contracts are up. Aliir for these 2 is an awful deal. We just always get screwed over in trades. I can't think of one in recent times that was definitely in our favour.Comment

It will probably be AA out and Tom Hickey in for a future 2nd round pick to Eagles. Sounds pretty lousy trade to me. AA was a good player, but he was inconsistent.Comment

Current state of play:
* 2 spots free on our main list.
* 4 spots free on the rookie list.
* No official word yet from the AFL regarding list sizes for next year (which IMO is reckless considering we're near the end of the trading period).
* We have traded away Aliir for a future second-round pick that would be around pick 35 before any compensation picks are awarded.
* We are still trying to get a deal for Hickey or Vardy at West Coast. Hickey is 29yo, 102 games at three clubs, 2010 zone selection by Gold Coast. Vardy is 29yo, 68 games, drafted at #42 in 2009 by Geelong. Neither player is a long-term solution for our long-term ruck deficiency.
I think I know what the plan is here. We may be recruiting a ruckman from West Coast who can play for a few years, and another via the draft. When the older player retires, the younger player will be maturing. The Western Bulldogs are doing similar, by recruiting Martin (33yo) from Brisbane. They're a couple of years ahead of us with English reaching the "mature" age (currently 23 yo), but their age gap of about 10 or 11 years between a recruit and aging ruck is similar to what we would have if we had Hicky/Vardy and a drafted ruck recruit. In the 2005 premiership year, Ball was nine years older than Jolly.
If we don't recruit a ruck with pick 3 (eg: Thilthorpe), we may be planning to recruit one with a late pick in the national draft or in the rookie draft. Recruiting two rucks in the same year is plausible when we've delisted Knoll and traded Aliir. Two out, two in."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

Well, this is The Age take on the Allir trade:
The future pick was key to the deal because both Sydney and Port Adelaide need points this season. The Swans have academy prospects Errol Gulden and Braeden Campbell on their radar while Port Adelaide want to draft Lachie Jones.Comment

Who knows what Aliir can do in a team where his x-factor strengths and abilities are valued. It is up to coaches to channel them for the benefit and good of the team. I am really upset that we haven't found a way to let him terrorise opposing.teams with his long arms and long rapid strides across the ground for our benefit.
Apart from Buddy, we now have only Ramps, Papley and maybe Heeney to creste a bit of excitement and break the mould that most Swans players have to fit into. It will be interesting to see how Blakey is developed into the future.Comment

Hickey is not the answer. He is a very lightweight ruck option. There are/were better rucks out there which we didn't go after.. Preuss is one that comes to mind. Had we had an inkling that AA was going to go, we should have gone after Preuss (who I liken to the Nank). He is 25/26 who would have given us a lot of good service, rather than a second/third rung option like Hickey. In my humble opinion, the Swans were asleep at the wheel there. Something is not quite right in the list management space.Comment

Anyone got an actual list of players still on our main list, I'm having trouble getting an accurate figure which is important because we need a vacant list spot for every pick we are taking to the draft for points. That will affect our ability to swap pick 25 for a couple of later picks netting more points.

I think before we burn membership cards and lynch Beatson and co, remember we're currently at quarter time.
The trade and draft period are one big lump, and let's see where we are at by the end of it.
If we got - a decent ruckman (and personally, I think Hickey was ok in the year Naitanui was out; no star, but an upgrade on Sinclair's actual ruck ability and frees him up to play forward instead), pick 3, the two Academy kids and a full draft hand for next year - I'd be ok. A long way to go yet.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

I would loved to have kept AA as he has huge upside, I just hope (1) Hickey isn’t as rubbish as most RWOers think he is (2) AA doesn’t make it as a ruckmanComment
