What the hell is going on with the Swans?

Losing AA and George Hewett? This is really sad if we lose both.... I cannot understand the list management (unless the club was budgeting for a sizeable increase in the cap over the remaining few years of the Buddy deal - quite clearly this will not happen).

I am amazed that it has come to this .. we are turning into Collingwood... and we didn't even make the GF two years ago

Do they know something about Hewett that we don’t? Is he past his prime due to his back injury and it would be better to use his currency and get rid of the contract than to hold him? Dan Hannebery was the same... long term injury and was on high pay and was never going to get back to his best.
As long as this is the reason, I am ok with it.
Footy is a ruthless business. I reckon the game style that we are adapting and his inability to play to his full potential may be the reason for his sale.

If Ling gets an uninterrupted pre-season then we'll know by the end of next year whether he can play. Worth a punt. Amartey is very lucky.

Both the Ling and Amartey contract extensions are sensible moves.

Ling has lost the 1st two years of his AFL career with injuries. He has a lot of talent and should get a clean shot to show why he was our 1st round pick.

Amartey also has suffered a few injuries, but overall has made reasonable progress. He has a lot of raw talent. He's quite athletic for someone his size, is an excellent mark and a booming kick. At this stage, he's our backup ruckman.

I'd be very surprised if we traded out Hewett. I'm not sure why we'd be under salary cap pressure. With such a young list, there's no way Buddy's contract is forcing that.
We should hold any hysterical views until the end of the trade window.

I'm still perplexed on the Aliir to Port discussion. His management says he wants to play as a permanent back, but Port say they see him as a Westhoff replacement. If I was Port, I'd be offering a ruck for him in a heartbeat.

Agree - that is what Port need .. we need a ruck... though I firmly believe that AA will flourish when being solely a third tall/intercept marker. Hope we do not trade AA

As for Aliir and Hewett, there's nothing like trade talk to bring out the love for oft maligned players.

Aliir and Hewett are 2 players I really like and are beyond doubt in our best 22. I also think they are 2 players that could make sense for us to trade for the right deal.

I agree that we shouldn't trade Aliir unless we get one of PA's ruckmen in exchange. With McCartin doing so well playing defence this year, and Melican contracted for 3 more years, we have plenty of coverage in defence.

After 2 high B & F finishes, Hewett's manager would rightly be looking for a big money contract. Contrary to what many on here believe, I think we are overstocked with midfielders, especially inside mids. And we would still like to get more speed in the centre if possible. We need to make room for the likelihood of Mills moving to the midfield and incoming midfielders Campbell and Gulden, as well as Chad Warner from last year's draft. Elijah Hollands may also be our most likely 1st draft pick this year.

I've commented before that list management is more about management than acquiring good players. Some of the issues exposed at various clubs this post season prove this point. We are not immune to this reality.

So far, we have delisted one player off the main list and cut four off the rookie list. We are looking to draft three players, are actively chasing a ruck, and are considering Paddy McCartin.

Something has to give. Either we're moving a minimum of two players to the rookie list, we have more players to be delisted, or we're trading players out to free up space on the main list. And that's assuming the list sizes do not change, which is unlikely. More changes to the playing list are coming, and we're not going to like them.

I have very mixed emotions about trading AA and/or GH, but if you are going to trade them, do it while they have currency. Although I worry we'll let one or other or both go for unders as this has tended to be the Swans way.

Upon reflection, the George Hewett story feels like a leak from AA's manager to try and weaken our hand in any negotiations with Port.

If AA and GH are up for trade. (BIG IF) We would want a serious ruck in exchange. Or at least if our salary cap in under pressure, serious relief of our cap $.

While players can play tall, you have to be 2.000+ to be tall

If we are under cap pressure then I think we can forget any big fish in wind or trading pick 3 for a player. Am I right in assuming the only non contracted players left on our list are Foot Fox Thurlow and Ronke? (Brandt???)

Maybe you haven't seen the right games. Some people closer to the situation have a different opinion.


Joel Amartey is such an asset to the Sydney Swans that development coach Lloyd Perris “would have liked two of him” in Saturday’s 14-point loss to GWS.

Perris rued his side’s lacklustre attack on the footy in the 9.15 (69) to 8.7 (55) defeat at Giants Stadium, but Amartey produced an outstanding solo game.

The 197-centimetre, 96-kilogram Swan finished the match with 26 disposals, eight marks, six tackles, 28 hit-outs and a goal in the Sydney Derby XVIII curtain-raiser

I think with our list the way it is Hewett is more dispensable than Aliir.
Hewett is more dispensable because of the plethora of midfielders and variety in their midst too.
Aliir a bit less dispensable as we dont have anyone who can play the utility role as well as Aliir. Maybe Sam Reid can do the job but hasnt been allocated to do so. Even if he only plays defense he is one of the 2 tallest players we have along with Kaiden Brand.
So I would put more value on Aliir than Hewett.

Again this is a way the team knows their players value in open market. To check what they can get for them in return when their currency is up and see if you can get anything in return for the betterment of the list.

My take is that both will stay.

Hayward and Ollie probably on OK money, but not $500k plus?
