Not necessarily. I still think best midfielder at No 2 or 3 overall (I still like Hollands) will help set up our midfield for years to come along with our current crop with Gulden and Campbell. Don't forget that we'll be in a powerful position to land a restricted free agent having a very early preseason draft pick, ideally a mature body in a KPP/ruck position.

That list makes James Rowbottom a ripper selection. Ranked higher than the much-vaunted Bailey Smith and Sam Walsh. (Not that I think it is a meaningful list).

Rowbottom and Smith have been great selections for the Swans and Dogs.

As an aside stevo, why is it ok to bag individual players, but criticising the coach is not allowed?
You might be right. I think though what we have seen with these players is a lack of willingness to apply pressure, or be physical. Yes they get touches but rarely contested. How many times do they sag out the back for the cheapy, or trot around for the 15m cheap chip. As for Clarke, yes he will win it but his disposal by hand and foot is appalling.
Here is a classic example. In the scratchy against freo Taylor, Clarke and grey were midfield. The ruck tap dropped in the middle. All of them stood there waiting for one of the other to go in and get it. None did so the freo kid grabbed it and ran off. None of them even tried to tackle him. That is why they don’t get picked. The young ones might be rough but at least they have a crack.

I didn't mention the coach in that post......

Seriously though, it's fine to criticise Horse but sometimes I just find it a bit relentless from a certain collective and express my dismay. Even when we have good wins, some still aren't happy (or are suddenly strangely absent from RWO).....

            ......and I love Horse!

For the record, I think Horse is doing a great job with who he has available.

Look at our injury list. It's shocking how many of those players would be in our walk in squad: Heeney, Franklin, Rampe, Naismith, Hewett and Brand. We should get Brand back shortly, but the others are out for the season. There was a point when we didn't have a 2nd or 3rd tier ruckman to trial, because they were also injured. So the need to shuffle the deck and play players in different spots is warranted.

This season has been a rebuild. It's clear that's where we are as a club. We need to play the kids. We get things right occasionally (GWS) and then lose it (Freo). Patience is needed. From me too. Last week was horrible.

There are other things which I believe make Horse a great coach. His relationship with the team, the passion in the box and his ability to be a thoughtful spokesperson when he's under the pump from the media or his peers.

Who should we replace him with? It's farcical to think after our prolonged success at playing final's footy that we don't take a turn out of the eight and have to rebuild again. Hopefully we get back up there soon. I don't think we are too far away. It looks like we'll get a few good players at the draft, trim our list and get the aforementioned players back from injury (apart from Naismith who will take longer).

Don't be cruel to animals - don't bash the horse.

Fair to say if Daniher does return this week & plays out remainder of the season, his performance will be the analysed to the enth degree from all quarters on where his playing future may lie.

Re Daniher : reports are now that he’s happy at Essendon and likely to stay. I suppose that depends how he goes for remainder of the season and what they offer him in terms of a new contract.

If thats the case no way will the Bombers give him the same deal and to get near it his manager will have to find it elsewhere. Needs to play every game from here on and show that he is fully over his injuries.Still will be the elephant in the room on any negotiations.

I'm not sure its a done deal yet. If he stayed at Essendon, ended up at the Swans or a third club, nothing would surprise me.

The Dons are also increasingly optimistic that they might be able to retain Daniher past this season after his trade request last year. Daniher split his time between Daylesford and Melbourne before Essendon went into hublife and is seen to be much more content than 12 months ago... Daniher is thriving in the hub environment at Essendon and is in a better state of mind than last season, but there is still plenty to play out in terms of his contract.

Never said it was a Done deal. Obviously lots to play out.

The Swans have been quiet on announcing player re-signings this season. I know there was a ban on it earlier in the year but I think that's now over. Other Clubs seem to have been more active in this regard. I wonder whether we should read anything into this? Hewitt is coming up to the end of his contract from memory so that will be interesting to watch. Also, there continues to be speculation about Papley although he is still under contract. It will be an interesting post-season especially if list sizes reduce as expected. I've no doubt that we will have another decent list turnover on the back of this season's performance. Players like Maiburn, Stoddard and Ling would be nervous.

Everyone out of contract would be nervous, not just those three!

Who knows where list sizes and TPP will land. It may be that the AFLPA, who have the final say as it's in the current CBA, may want status quo as they've already taken a fair cut this year and big savings are being made in Footy Departments. We wait and see, and be nervous :-)

I've had similar thoughts regarding George, hot because I don't value him, but that he and his wife has their baby in dramatic circumstances this year and may now be feeling a pull to go home. I would guess that the Crows would be very interested in him. Hope he stays, seems like a likely long term replacement for JPK, but wouldn't be surprised if he requests to go home for genuine family reasons.

If - and it's an if - we have to let a decent player go to get good picks to cover Campbell and Gulden, then George seems the pea to me.

Not because I don't rate him. I do. He'd be a coaches dream, he's tough as, he's a better kick than given credit for, and plays as hard on defence as offense.

But, we don't have KPPs to spare, and between Parker, Heeney, Rowbottom, Mills if we ever choose, and some of the other younger players coming through, we do have some good centre square players. (I haven't included JPK as he's only got a year or two left probably).

I know you can probably never have enough, but if we have to give something, he is an option. My only queries would be: does it widen the age gap we've already got between the older crew and the young ones coming through too much, and can we get a pick in the late 20s/early 30s for him. I suspect anything later than that would make it questionable.
