In regard to our recuiting over the past few years, we have maybe made a few errors but I'm sure the club thought they were getting the best 'available' players at the time. As Aaron said above, any player we consider has to tick all of the above boxes.....and not all the gun players are automatically ours to recruit.
Also, all the gun players had to start somewhere to become gun players.....and we already have a few of those I believe.
As far as the Longmire v Scott debate goes, Scott has taken Geelong to a total of one grand final which they won. Longmire has taken us to three of which we won one and had another stolen on the day. I think I know who is the better coach.....

Longmire inherited his list from Roos as well

I just don’t think it’s right to denigrates Scott’s achievements when Longmire hasn’t achieved any more.

I was happy with the coaching and performance as I stayed in the game day thread
Scott inherited a team that won the flag 2 years earlier. Longmire inherited a team that was last in a grand final 5 years before and had finished outside the 8 two years earlier. Happy to defend JL on facts when I disagree with you. Good to hear you were positive about our win.

The other thing about recruiting gun players from other clubs, which was raised re: Hawthorns current predicament, is that its hard to recruit them during a rebuild and much much easier if the club can sell itself as being in the window for a premiership.

A club finishing bottom 4 is not a destination club. A top 4 club is.

We wanted to recruit Joe Daniher, and if we had succeeded, we would have lost Papley and our #5 pick, Stephens. The fact that we held firm and didn't give away the farm turned out to be the right move. Often, not recruiting, ends in the best result.

I think our recruiters were right in their assessment that we had fallen out of the premiership window after 2016 and we needed to go to the draft to rebuild with youth. Alternatively, giving up draft picks to supplement our experienced list would have fallen short, and then we might be looking at an empty shell of team this year. It's true that we are a bottom half of the ladder team now, but we can see a bright future with a large core of good young players that should be with the Swans for many years.
I agree wirh this, being in sydney we simply arent in the market to get most free agents.

I agree some of the recruiting hasnt been great but none of it has cost us more than a 3rd rounder so who cares if it comes off or not.

I remember we had 6yrs and 600k at Langdon from the Pies and he still didnt come

We are paying way above others to lure guys from a best 22

            so its an AFL problem
            A Swans destination problem
            or both?
what needs to change so we dont go sideways next few years as Kennedy, Bud and Rampe retire ?

I mean no Rampe right now and I wonder whether we would win a game quite frankly

No one seems to be talking about our replacement strategy? With Kennedy and Bud out we are almost last on the table

No Rampe omg i shudder to think

Rampe is like air at the moment

            no rampe no wins

What is your solution Auntie G? Given the parameters we are living with, how would you like us to proceed?

Hitting the draft and playing kids in the right positions...

You need 24/25 yr olds with 70+ games in them, it takes time.

No point us grabbing a big money free agent atm, shouldnt be grabbing anyone over 25.

Great point and even more reason to keep winning as many games as we can for the rest of the season. Finishing just outside the eight would have us looking on the rise and worth being a part of.....and that's besides the confidence and motivation it will give our young players going forward.

Do you believe in Santa? LOL

No scratchies, just straight into the cauldron of senior footy. Bombers getting desperate to make something of this season, only beaten the bottom of the ladder and some of those were narrow wins. I see Barrett said JD "can't wait to get out of the place" which I assume is Essendon and Victoria :-)

I’d like to see JD show he’s still got it before we dump a truckload of cash on him.

No point getting one's knickers in a knot. The only way to become competitive is to draft/trade well. Taking picks to the draft and drafting quality kids. waswan speaks sense in that no need to draft hasbeens. A little bit of short term pain for long term gain. It is also dependent where one's list is at.

Geelong's recruitment will be unsuccessful in the long run, albeit their fantastic trade with WCE for Kelly.. picked him up for late first round/early second round, and got two first rounders back. I highly doubt that they will be able to win something this year, though they most likely will reach the prelim. That is not success for me.

In 2 years time, our onball division of Rowbottom, Lizard, Stephens, Cambell and maybe Gulden added to Hewett and Parks (at the end of this career) I think will only be matched by Brisbane's, Carlton's and maybe the Bullies.

Having said the above.. this year's draft will be the most intriguing yet, and all sorts of draft steals are there to be had later on in the draft (given limited afl for the 17/18 year olds).

I'm backing Kinnear Beatson in as well as Dalrymple... Hoping that if we sign Daniher it will be heavily performance based..

If we are to make a play for Daniher this year, can someone please confirm if I have got it right?

                              1) He's a RFA so we can make him an offer than the Bombers are unwilling or unable to match? (But this would push us away from a performance based contract as it would have to have hard $ in it)
                              2) We could trade with Essendon for him, like the Dangerfield arrangement? (Which means we could pay less contractually but more in terms of draft picks)
                              3) He's out of contract so could walk away from the Bombers and take his chances in the PSD? (as Jack Martin just did. But again this would require a contract others above us in the PSD would be unwilling or unable to match, so Adelaide, North, Hawks ...)

And the threat of 3) can be used to lower the value of 2) particularly if 2) is as good as the compensation pick the Bombers would get if he went as a free agent.

And Dodoro is the man we have to deal with to get the deal done!

I think all that is right,
If I was Sydney id be offering 3yrs heavily performance based.
                                350 guarenteed upto 600k.

If that didnt get him then so be it.

Emphasis on the heavily perfomance based too..... Tippett got a trigger in his lucrative contract, for what i still dont know
