One should discount rumours from opposition supporters, especially if they have ever tried to spread unsubstantiated rumours before.

Buddy will definitely play again, it's just a matter of which year.

I would like him to get some games in this year before a big pre season, think that's important for him as he has barely played.

I didn't realise Tom Papley has a brother Will, who is eligible for the draft this year. Probably going to be unlikely we draft him given Campbell and Gulden.

The NAB League guns we won't see in 2020: Check out Vic Country's brightest prospects

Will Papley, the younger brother of Sydney star Tom, is a similar type of player. A touch taller than Tom at 177cm, Papley is more of an inside midfielder who can go forward and display his craft around goal. Like Tom, clubs like his ability to play a split-second ahead of the game through his reading of the contest.

Everyone should have a link to the BF Trading, Drafting, FA board where an Essendon supporter maintains the absolute best and easy to read chart of all draft picks. It's my bible when looking at who has what picks.

It seems to update every game which is excellent, the only picks that never move are Adelaide's original picks that are anchored firmly at the start of every round, we have their first pick in Round Four.

              .
              Thanks 707. That's a pretty useful link.

I'm estimating that Campbell and Gulden will cost us around 2000 points, granted that it's a pretty rough guess. If we don't use our first rounder in the draft, we could trade down into the early 2nd round, dropping somewhere between 1000 and 1300 points and still have enough to get the academy pair without going into deficit. I think we can get a pretty good player with that, if we have a gettable target in mind.

I agree with Nico that Mabior Chol is probably not gettable, given his solid performances, but would otherwise fall into that price range. Peter Ladhams from PA is another that might be gettable for a good price as Port have Lycett and young Sam Hayes in the ruck. I've been impressed with his performances, both in the ruck and forward. Peter Wright and Preuss would go for a somewhat lower price. Preuss looked okay on the weekend.

With Rampe out, we should see what our KPD depth looks like. Hopefully we will also get at least a glimpse of Amartey and Knoll. After our performance v. GWS, I'm even more convinced that the only major hole we have in our list is at ruck or ruck/forward. Otherwise, I think we are looking pretty solid into the future.

Do you think the swans will only pick up 3 players in the draft?

when is the AFL expected to make a call on the list sizes for next year? It must be driving the fringe players and player managers mad not knowing

Even in a normal year without the possibility of list size reductions, we don't have many obvious delistings this year. Thurlow was the most obvious one for me a few weeks back, but now he's in the side and playing well. Naismith is under contract, so he would have to retire to get off the list. We can all come up with a few names that we think should be delisted, but none are clearly obvious ones. Reynolds, being injured and out of contract becomes one possibility. I think we would probably like to give Rowles a chance to see what he can do in a regular competition, but that's not going to happen this year. I think Clarke will find it hard to get games in the future; he's not a bad player and he has his fans on RWO, but he has to be a high possibility for being cut. And we don't have any retirements. So it's not easy to create open spots on our list.

That sums up why I think we will have few additions to the club this year, and next as well. I think 3 players will come from the draft or via a traded out draft pick. A Daniher recruitment is an open question. So he could be the 4th. I don't think we are that keen to cut players like Ronke, Amartey, Stoddart, Wicks, Knoll, Maibaum or Mclean, but these would be the next group that cuts could come from if we have an imposed list reduction. The chances of replacing any of them with a better prospect toward the end of the draft is unlikely.

I have noted in several of my previous posts that these next 2 years have no obvious retirements, and I thought we would have a 2 year period of few newbies coming to the club. This would allow our large list of young prospects to make their way through the system and we can sort out which ones are keepers after having a proper look at them. So, a mandatory list size reduction would have a big impact on us, coming at a time when we have so many players in early development.

Without knowing who comes out of contract this year, I can see a pruning of our ruck division and defensive KPD stocks (aka Maibaum) on the cards. Could be a year of very ruthless delisting given many on the list will have had an opportunity to play in the AFL and show if they cut it or not.

Players like Knoll, Maibaum, Rowles and Reynolds are on the rookie list, so aren't going to count towards the mandatory reduction of three players (before any list size reductions are applied).

Thurlow's last two games have certainly made picking three players (minimum) to lose that bit harder.

Hopefully the AFL has backed away from the list size reduction now that they've managed to get (or should get) some kind of season completed. It would be a huge shame to see the likes of Hewett, Dawson, Grundy, Smith not given the time they need to develop before they're ready to play senior footy. I don't believe there is a sturdy enough structure underneath the AFL to provide decent opportunity to most of these players to develop outside the system. Some will, for sure, as some already do in the state leagues. But overall it will see a decline/ slow down of the development of the talent pool available to the elite level.

We may be forced into a ruthless delisting if there is an imposed list size reduction, but I disagree that there have been many on our list who have been given the opportunity to play and have shown they can't cut it. I agree that Maibaum is certainly high on list of possible cuts, but he hasn't played an AFL game yet, nor have Knoll and Amartey.

We have 10 players who have played between 1 and 8 games: McLean, Bell, Stoddart, McInerney, Stephens, ET, Ling, Warner, Wicks and Foot. From those limited amount of games, I don't think any on this list are obvious delistings. In fact, they all have shown something to warrant more development time. A few on here think Stoddart should be cut, but he played a solid 16 disposal game, his best of 6 games, before getting a season ending back injury. I would like to see more next year. Although he's been dropped, I don't think Ling is likely to be cut. The others all show reasonable promise.

It's a very difficult predicament for list managers with the lack of lower level competitions to assess young players. Longmire even commented that it was particularly difficult for a club like the Swans with a young playing list, not only with the lack of competitive games, but also limited training sessions.

The last time I read something on this topic (several weeks ago, can’t remember where) it was said the AFL were moving away from the idea of cutting list sizes as they recognised the difficulty of injury tolls.

I hope that is the end result. But still might be less money to pay the players .. I also recall reading a few weeks ago clubs were told to allow for a 5% cut if they chose to renew an existing contract during this season.

Who would expect anything else from an Essendon supporter. They are second only to Hawthorn. Disgraceful bunch at the footy and take the gold medal for shocking comments on social media.
