Stevoswan I might disagree over details but I agree 100% in principle.

I reckon we made a decision when we offloaded Hanners / Rohan to rebuild with a view to being competitive and active players at the end of Buddy’s contact either 2021 or 2022.

Pick 3 for Cox and pick 16? Cox is slow and useless below the knees.

If we are after a short term option, why not give Majak Daw a go? good leap, agile and can play forward as a resting ruckman...best of all free

If I thought we could land McDonald of Thilthorpe, I would keep pick 3, but it seems they will go to Adelaide and North. There's nothing worth a pick 3 to us after that.

After the JUH bid matching, our first pick goes to 4 and Collingwood to 17. That\s a 1000 point difference. Someone will take that off our hands for some later picks, like a 2020 and 2021 2nd rounders. So it comes out to paying 1000 points for Mason Cox. Yes that is overs, but I think he can play another 4 years and make a big difference to our ruck situation. As a byproduct, we don't have to worry about a points deficit for next year.

I like some other solutions, particularly ones involving younger ruckmen, and would take that over Cox if it arises.

Even if we pay a bit overs, it fixes our main list problem, then I think we should do it. Anyone, who knows what Collingwood wants for Cox. Maybe they'll take a 3rd rounder.

The same holds for Geelong's Ratugolea. I would do some swap involving our pick 3, if he's on the table.

Which is why I can see clubs trying to get forwards to ruck rather than vice versa.

Tom Hawkins is interesting because he only takes ruck contests fwd but completely dominates when he does.
The best rucks are pure rucks. They spend very little time forward. They are either rucking or on the bench. The All Australian ruck Nic Nat kicked 5 goals for the year and took 15 marks in total - less than 1 per game! Max Gawn kicked 1 goal, Grundy 3, Goldstein 6, Jarrod Witts 0.

In looking for a ruckman it should be a moneyball pick. Look for a crash and bash ruckman that can run and mark like Nankervis who is now a 3 time premiership ruckman.
The ruck role is the most over-rated in footy.
Use our pick 3 on a quality mid or forward that will be with us for 10+ years.

Agree. Pick 3 for Cox and pick 16 is vomit inducing. Future second at absolute best for Cox.

                  Agree...definitely didn't deserve pick 2 for Crouch.

                  McDonald/Thilthorpe/DGB/Hollands/Phillips

                  Happy with any of those

Why wouldn't we pick this bloody winner?

Terrific news about Crouch compensation. I hope Adelaide match too. It might not mean much but if they match our 2nd rounder (and 3rd/4th) doesn't get pushed back a spot.

I am now adamant that we keep pick 3. I may change my mind before the draft but my preference would be for this pick in order would be McDonald, Hollands, Phillips, Thilthorpe, DGB.

McDonald has done amazing things against men in the WAFL and is first priority. However, I reckon only a 10% chance of lasting until us.

If Hollands didn't do his ACL, he'd be favourite for number 1 (well 2 after JUH). But the fact is he did do his ACL but I'd be happy to take that chance. I like drafting country Vic guys too over Vic metro. Less go home factor.

I know others are keen on Thilthorpe and I do like his draft highlights but I do worry that he could be an in between player - not quite a top line key forward, not quite a top line ruck.

Philips is possibly the safest bet out of all of these guys. If you love Rowbottom, Philips will blow your mind. However, he is similar in profile to Rowbottom and Gulden particularly. He also is from Vic Metro so is potentially more likely to be attracted to go home.

DGB is a fantastic prospect in defence. He could also turn into another version of Aaron Naughton who was an exceptional marking defender in the juniors before moving forward. However, he is stick thin and will take a couple of years to really develop. We have a history of drafting defenders late too.

I’m not convinced the special herbs and spices won’t deliver pick 2 to the Crows given how hard they’ve tried and what happened with Daniher’s 3x$700k deal.

Hate to think the Dodo might be able to engineer a pick before ours.

Our national draft picks in previous years (as selected):

                            2019: 5, 26, 36, 39.
                            2018: 10*, 25, 44, 51.
                            2017: 14, 33, 53.
                            2016: 11, 21, 45, 48.
                            2015: 3*, 51, 56.

                            * = Academy selections.

Before 2015, different draft rules applied for Academy selections.

This shows that we've drafted three or four players in each of the last five drafts, and have finished drafting early.

If we only draft three players this year, our pick match for Gulden could be the earliest finish we've had to a draft for some time.

If we end up picking four players (less likely), the fourth player may be a tall player towards the end of the draft.

I think he is described as a balanced mid who can push forward. The balanced angle is most probably a reflection on how good he is all round as a junior and there's no reason he couldn't develop into whatever midfielder (or even medium forward) we want him to.

St Kilda lodged paperwork for Adelaide midfielder Brad Crouch but will the Crows be satisfied with its compensation pick?

Thank Mildred! We are now assured of one of Logan, Hollands or Tilthorpe. Plus Campbell and Gulden. That's good enough for me.

In future off seasons we'll be able to focus on needs and switch to trading for good players.
