AA is not going to ... Pick 29 will turn into pick 35/36 with NGA's and F/S. There is a snowflake's chance in hell that KB would do that

That pick wouldn't really solve our deficit problem if Campbell goes high and then leaves us minus AA. Harley said AA is contracted and is expected to be with us in 2021. If Port want him it's up to them to come up with something tempting enough to let him go, if AA wants to go.

As I thought, we're interested in Paddy McCartin but need to see list sizes first. We'll probably commit to adding him after the ND, uncontracted players should be nervous

If Paddy comes to us he's the goal square gorilla leaving Buddy & Reid to float further up the ground.

Mostly agree, BUT Dennis Carroll is a big loss.. a great Sydney person and a thorough gentleman at that

I quite agree and I posted to that effect in the other thread ("end of an era"). I didn't mention him in this post because he was not considered coaching staff, even though he has (sort of) been replaced by someone who has been a coach until now. That development/welfare role is a bit fuzzy - development is normally considered as part of coaching but welfare role not so much

(as opposed to the welfare function which is part of any coach's remit)

Just heard on trade radio that AA's agent (Paul Connors) says that AA is "OPEN" to being traded. He did you those dreadful words... "next year he is a free agent" so unfortunately AA may be exploring his options. The agent did say the Swans are really intent on keeping him.

Aliir Aliir was open to looking at his options, "possibly" including Port Adelaide.

He knows he won't have to play ruck at Port plus they are further into their premiership window then us. Given the stop start nature of his career with us (not sure if that's his fault, ours or a combination of both), I wouldn't blame him for wanting to go.

We better extract decent compensation though and not give him away for peanuts.

Meanwhile Sydney’s Aliir Aliir could still find a new home this exchange period, despite the Swans’ interest in keeping him.

Port Adelaide is interested in the backman and his manager Connors said he and the player are still considering Aliir’s future.

“Next year he’s a free agent. He had a difficult year where he was filling a few different positions,” Connors said on Trade Radio.

“I like him as a marking, rebounding half-back. I know the Swans want to keep him but we would be open to looking at options, one could be Port Adelaide.”

Sounds like AA doesn't necessarily want to go but we need to do something to make him happy. I think we may need to either extend his contract or trade him (unless we think that the compensation we will get if we lose him next year will be as good as whatever we might get by way of trade in which case we can keep him anyway - would even be ok to get a bit less by way of compo pick in return for a year's extra service and the opportunity to persuade him to stay some more).

I'm a bit torn about AA. At his best, he is as good as Nick Haynes was this year in the intercept defender role. But then there are those times where my heart is in my mouth as he drops the simple chest mark or disposes the ball like an amateur. I have often wondered if the bad moments are as a result of no consistency in his selection or position?

Overall, if he's at the stage he wants to go, it might be best to part company but only for appropriate compensation.

I dont agree. AA has played a number of roles this year as a matter of necessity but in what way has he been mismanaged. Surely the underlying mantra must be Ill pay in the position that works best for the team as a whole. Its not like he is not getting games because of it. Players should be able to play more than as the third loose defender in my view and really this is all he has excelled at.

I wonder if his manager has been in his ear advising him that his contract value will diminish next year when he is out of contract if he continues to play in various roles next year (like he has this year) so he should look at solid offers now, particularly if its right in his sweet spot. Lets face it , his next contract is in all liklihood going to be his last opportunity for a 3-4 year deal on bigger bucks.

I also was listening to AA's manager being interviewed today on trade radio. So I guess we have to decide whether to take the gamble to hang onto him and hope that we can re-sign him, or go into the lottery of FA which means that we may be get less for him next year if we cannot convince him to stay.

It was worth a try using AA in the ruck and forward, and for the most past, he did pretty well. Next year is another story. I understand why he wants to play in defence where he was rated so highly just 2 years ago. Next year we have to settle him back in defence and let him get back to his best. Hopefully the results for the team will also improve. If all goes well, Aliir should be talked about as one of the best intercept defenders. He will likely receive some good offers. He will be a RFA, so we could match the offer if it comes down to that. If he does leave, we should be able to get a 1st rounder for him, either by compo or trade. A high pick is wasted this year because of the academy kids. So holding out till next year makes sense for us on many fronts.

We do now know he want's to play as a 3rd intercepting defender, and this is probably his best role. It's the one area of the ground where we have an excess of tall players, but I don't know if any of them are as good as AA at his best: His best is very good, but his worst is pretty terrible. I don't know which AA we are going to get next year?
