I'm surprised so many posters on here are dismissing pick 4 out of hand. We should absolutely be seeking it, in my view. He's one of our best and most important players.
It's certainly not a second rounder. It's some kind of first round pick and it's a higher pick than we got for Mitchell (pick 14), who we weren't totally unhappy to see leave.
What does everyone think his value is in a flat pick sense. Pick 6? Pick 7?
As the draft order stands, if Adelaide swapped pick 4 for pick 31 the trade would be worth pick 10, which is more than fair for them.Comment

If it's future picks, Dawson will devalue those picks because Adelaide will win more games with him in the side. Their future first-round pick should be included in the offer without a first-round pick going back in that scenario.
I haven't considered Port Adelaide here. Port's got little salary cap space and their current draft picks are rubbish. I cannot see how he ends up at Port. What would Port be able to offer to get the deal done?"Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

Is there a connection between Mitchell and Dawson being held back in their early years when they were clearly good enough to be in the top 22 and them leaving.
Would others feel the same knowing that players were picked this year who were not best 22.Comment

For me the frustration is not just that I love having Dawso in our team and he won't be there in 2022 most likely ........but much worse is we are in a window and so is Port.
If Dawso goes to Port they have tremendously
weakened our list via AA and even worse they have massively boosted their chances in 2022/23
Hmmmm
It puts us back in the trade erena but it is a big loss unless we offer a huge contract to keep him
So now the club can either persuade him to stay or get the best possible trade. Once a player asks to be traded to another club, feelings are not the same and can take a bit of time for him to be accepted back in the fold. Paps was under contract when he wanted to leave and the club held a strong hand. Not so with Dawson. As much as I hate losing him, I think when all is considered we let him go. If his heart is not with us, what’s the point?Comment

There is no reason why it can't include a pick swap of first rounders. It could be 4 and 23 for Dawson and 13 (1637 points). The draft points would be equivalent to pick 7 (1644 points).
If it's future picks, Dawson will devalue those picks because Adelaide will win more games with him in the side. Their future first-round pick should be included in the offer without a first-round pick going back in that scenario.

The only way it can involve Port is if they throw in a ruckman with their first round pick. I still prefer your Adelaide proposal.
I suspect Adelaide has already made the offer, but if Port don't win the premiership it might increase the likelihood they'd be involved in the bidding.Comment

Mitchell had a number of injuries that held him back. Like his old man he left for the lolly. And it seems he is moving on from Hawthorn for the same reason.Comment

Of course, the impact of life in NSW being pretty miserable at the moment probably weighed heavily on Dawson’s decision.
Adelaide have the good draft pick options for a trade, but if Port want to trade out Ladhams I wouldn’t say no. Another big body making an impact in the Mummy style would be a bonus.Comment

It used to be that we never lost players we wanted to keep or we only let ones go that weren't that good. The recent trend is disturbing, players going to bigger and better things and players we want to keep leaving.
Given how many young players we have in the team the salary cap management is not up to scratch, that we couldnt come up with enough for a 3yrd player like Dawson is very distressing.
Under no circumstances should we ever sign another deal longer than 5 years and only then for a young player.
Its no surprise that the teams with very long term contracts (Sydney - Franklin & Collingwood - Grundy) are absolutely crippled in their salary cap. Getting Buddy was smart and its clear Hawthorn were happy to let him go but the 10 year deal was a mistake we are still paying for. No issues with his performance but such a long deal has meant no ability to finesse his deal to fit cap needs.
We need to stop the obsession with over paying for as superstar player, the clear trend of the game is to gather a group of very good players rather then get a superstar.Comment

Great comment. I get so sick of the "it's Buddy's contract" comments both here and in other media. It's the sudden changing of the rules by the AFL, specifically targetting us, which is the problem. That turd McGuire still keeps banging on about it being a required change because we abused COLA, which is entirely false. My opinion is objective truth in its purest formComment
