Let me start this by saying I'm gutted at Dawson wanting to leave BUT - on RWO right here and right now there is so much shrill hysteria and complete rubbish over this news.

There's outrage and completely incorrect blaming of the club salary cap management, Buddy's contract being named as the cause of our problem, Swans lowballing him, doomsday trade scenarios including Crows getting him by the PSD etc, etc.

That perpetual Swans basher Jon Ralph has said in this mornings media "the Swans offered Dawson a deal of up to five seasons and had the cap space to make an extremely generous offer"

So please get a grip folks, this decision has everything to do with girlfriend from Adelaide, no Covid in SA, Covid disaster in NSW and the pressure of no entry to SA for anyone from NSW, etc. Can we please stop clogging this thread with inaccurate and plain untrue posts.

As for where Dawson goes and what we'll get for him, lets wait and see. How could he choose Crows who are 2-3 seasons minimum away from even getting to finals but do have truck loads of cap space. Port he plays finals for foreseeable future but they have a tight cap.

Crows are not very imaginitive at trading, Port target their man and get things done. I'd prefer he chooses Port.

Here is what I don't get...why would the Swans ever even entertain trading him away unless they get a massive offer? He is 24 years old. He is RESTRICTED. I have no problem with Luke Parker walking away if he wants...he paid his dues. But I am confounded by the AFL teams' willingness to let young players, with a few years in the league, dictate terms. To me, and I am a naive' American, I think there is tremendous value in just using the word "NO", if for no other reason that they are setting a precedent for future restricted free agents. If another team wants to put themselves in cap hell for signing Jordan Dawson, let them and take the compensation. If he wants to risk the draft, where there is no guarantee that he goes to South Australia, let him. If he wants to sit, let him sit. But to me, at some point the teams name to take control over their rosters again. Finally, I am really tired of young men in their twenties asking to "go home" because they are home sick, etc. Young men go to foreign nations to fight for their countries at 18... I don't think it is too traumatic to play in another major city and to Skype with relatives for a while for a tremendous salary. Anyway, I may be off base but I really struggle to understand the AFL trade deadline culture...

Great post. I’m firmly of the belief that the inability to visit the folks and the whole NSW covid situation has played a major part in this decision. The admission that Dawson had a very generous long-term offer also puts paid to the salary cap stories. There are many players running around now who are paid more than Buddy, but no one is pointing the finger at those clubs. Well, maybe with the exception of Collingwood.
Are we a better team with Dawson? Absolutely yes. But there are 21 other blokes also contributing. Losing one of the most talented players in league history didn’t stop the Hawks, and getting Mitchell didn’t make them suddenly world-beaters again.

Too much pampering of youngsters now in our culture, starting at Primary School. Encouragement and positive reinforcement are fine up to a point but these days, this approach can easily lead to a lack of resilience and a tendency to look for an easy way out. Saying no at the right time has gone out of fashion. Don't know if this applies to Dawson but it is an issue in society here now. Not saying we should go back to my younger days when boys/men were just expected to tough everything out, but the balance has tilted too far the other way.

I’d expect that the Crows second round pick and a later pick swap in our favour is the best we can hope for.

Will be interesting to see if we try and keep Hewett or bank the cap space with an eye on the future and try and use the money to tie down Logan.
This is kinda where I got to as well. We got less than this for Allir who was contracted and probably a better player.

While we might hope we can do business with Port, I feel like they are overloaded with these types already- Hamish Hartlett hasn't been able to get a game this year!

It still completely bewilders me that this kid has made this decision - just defies logic, but I guess logic is not always the overriding criterion in a decision like this.

Great to meet a like minded poster on here. I take an American lense to a lot of sports situations.

On the subject of players wanting to go home Can you imagine the reaction of an NFL general manager to a player who said “I want to go home”? The general manager would laugh and say “clear your locker at get the @@@@ out.

The AFL industry needs a hard arse to tell these blokes that the go home factor is for primary school kids and not professionals. This go home factor is an indulgence that the AFL industry has let foster to the game’s detriment.

Based on the current situation, I’m would be resigning Dawson for two more seasons unless we get pick 4 from the Crows.

It’s quite simple for Dawson. Go to North or Collingwood in the pre-season draft or sign with us.

I’ve got every faith that if we drag Dawson kicking and screaming back to Moore Park that he will be fine.

What does TheBloods think of the Swans playing hard ball and putting him in the draft to go to North or just resign with us.

Allir has done well and I am stoked he has but I’m not slitting my wrists over that deal like some on here.

It was essentially a swap with Hickey and I think that was win-win. How do you think we would have done with Sinkers as our first ruckman all year. I think hickey is close to recruit of the year and Aliir provided the currency and salary to get the deal done

All of the pundits seem to think Cerra is going to Carlton for Pick 6. Is Cerra a better player than Dawson? I think not. Cerra is a little younger though. Dawson is worth around Pick 8 to 10 in my view (age discount). I would reluctantly accept 11 to 18 if that was the only decent offer and its near to the trade deadline.

I will be very disappointed if we trade him for a second rounder. If the latter is their best offer, then we should consider the nuclear option of forcing him into the pre-season draft with a good 2-year deal on the table. A late second round offer from Port would only be in the very late 30s given father-son and other compensation picks. I expect that Dawson would prefer to go to Port given they are right in the premiership window.

Disgraceful by Dawson . We were patient with him when he was out of shape that is a FACT !! Got reamed out by the coaches for an attitude problem after a hitout at Henson park in 2017 .. stuck fat with him and gave him opportunities , offered him a multi year big $$ contract and he turns his back on us ! What a sod . See ya later

Cant deny his talent though . This will hurt the team big time . We will go into next year with some steaming duds in our team while a STAR will probably be crushing it at Power ! What is happening !!

Would others feel the same knowing that players were picked this year who were not best 22.
I doubt it - Mitchell perhaps had a chip on his shoulder, but it took a fair bit of development for Dawson to get that point.
