Agreed. Unfortunately for me people on this forum underestimate Hewett. Whilst he is not quick (or explosive for that matter), Hewett can shut opponents down, has great disposal efficiency off both sides. He is totally underrated, and would be one of the first picked every week. Though I guess the amount that he is being paid would have something to do with it.

Dawson is now out of quarantine so can start meeting with Cows and Port. Whilst I'm gutted at losing Dawson, I really hope we get a good deal at the trade table to soften the blow.

It's a funny spot to be in. Too good not to be in our best 22 but also not crucial or needed. Clarke is definitely a poor man's Hewett and should be kept as depth if Hewett goes.

I think Hewett could be a real boon for Carlton and become one of their best mids. With Kennedy's form dropping and with only with a year or so to go left, if Parker/Mills have a bad season or an injury, we'll regret letting him go.

Seriously on the fence about not retaining him.

I’ve always liked Hewitt but can understand the club’s position. I find it funny that some are saying supporters on here are wrong in underrating he and Fox - the club itself has:

Yep what Steve said they are both good players but we need some great players in their roles

I was in a pet shop yesterday and discovered a disheveled woman talking to the goldfish. She was wearing a Port Power beanie. She may have thought she was talking to the players (not wide of the mark). Some fish looked like Kochie. She could have been Ken Hinkley. The experience is not uncommon given Port's appeal to the intellectually dispossessed with each home game beginning with the crowd roaring some drivel from INXS. Next year it may be Normie Rowe's 'Que Sera Sera'.

The Crows, on the other hand, are so bereft of skills, talent, and common sense - from the board down to the rookies - they are a cheeseburger of mediocracy.

Such are the options facing Jonathon Dawson. Frankly, him moving will improve the IQ of the Swans and the club of his choice.

On Dylan Stephens: I suspect the drop in the interchange numbers has restricted his time on the ground. Make sense that more experienced and seasoned players will be kept on the ground longer. I noticed he and Rowbottom had games at around 60% TOG and there were probably a few more. Makes it difficult for a young player to have an influence and gain valuable experience.

In close games coaches are going to try to keep their best 18 on the ground in close finishes.

Thats no excuse , isnt he meant to be one of the fittest players at the swans ?? He averaged 80% time on ground last year and there are other YOUNG swans who all had time on ground in the high 70s . Experience has nothing to do with it , he needed to pull his finger out and didnt , and im a fan

• I wonder if we are limited in what we do right now with new player contracts of significance before a deal for Dawson has become accepted in principle. As long as there is a remote possibility that Dawson stays at Sydney, it could hold up other deals, as we would have to hold his money to the side until we know it's free to use on others. It also affects our draft position and might even involve a player coming to the Swans as part of the deal.
• I don't think people on here underrate Hewett, although many have in the past. It's simply that clubs cannot carry extra quality players and pay them fairly. It's unfair to the players to have to make a choice of playing a highly qualified veteran or giving that opportunity to a promising young player (like Stephens). The salary cap takes those options away.
• I don't think that Richmond would have liked losing either Chol or CCJ, but now it seesms like they will lose both. If they were on the Swans, I'm sure we would want to keep both as well.
• We have to convince Stephens that, although we have a strong midfield and lots of players with speed and good kicking skills, there is a spot for him on the Swans. Losing Dawson and Hewett creates 2 spots in the sides. We will see if this, along with the persuasive powers of Harley will be enough to do it.
• The ruckman Toby Conway has been on Cal Twomey's top 25 list and has been mentioned several times by different members over the past several months. He could be in the picture for us with a 2nd round pick.
• I don't think this is a good year to recruit a back up ruckman from the stocks of already backup ruckmen. I don't see the advantage of recruiting someone like Archie Smith. Is he really that much better than Amartey and McLean? We are probably not in the premiership window anyway, and if Hickey goes down, no backup ruckman is going to save us. If we get Hayes as part of a Dawson deal, it could be okay, as Hayes is yet to play an AFL game and is waiting for a spot anyway. Otherwise, next year would be when we might be in the market for a Hickey replacement.
• I don't see why the debate comparing Melican and Fox continues on. They are 2 different kinds of players. Fox is not a KPD and has simply filled in as one because Melican was injured and we don't have the quality of depth to cover not having a fullback, so Fox ended up as the next best option for most of the season. I think Fox is a good player with the versatility to be on our list. He's the kind of depth player who can come in a do a decent job in several positions.

Ludwig I think you make a good point about some deals holding up others. Stephens deal both in terms of $$ and opportunity may well hinge on the departure of Hewett and/or Dawson.

I disagree about the need for a backup to Hickey and think Smith could be an upgrade on Sinkers with the opportunity to grow into Hickey’s role or even play as part of a two ruck setup.

Hewett is in our best 22. Maybe his leg speed is his enemy. He got plenty of the footy when he went back to the midfield.

Just saw some vision of Dawson leaving Port Adelaide's offices after his meeting. It made me realise that he is going to a completely different city in terms of pressure and coverage. From what I understand, they are just mad for anything football there. I hope JD has really thought this through because if he is getting paid the big dollars plus costing early draft picks, the pressure will be a lot higher than it was here.

From what I understand, they are just mad for anything football there. Media attention here is extreme, there was a full page!! in the Advertiser (Murdoch) here a few days back about why the Cows must land Dawson. Good that JD is speaking to both clubs, Port suits us better as they can't threaten PSD like Cows might in their trade negotiations.

Yep, it's a fishbowl here in Adelaide for the Cows and Port, you can't get away with a quiet coffee or meal without being bothered by fans and the media scrutiny is relentless
