Swans move to lock away Irishman
Says COR is close to a one-year contract extension. Sydney currently has 15 players without a contract, the most in the AFL."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

Just for my own clarification what do you consider a tall defender? I see people referring to Robbie as one but he is only 187 cm or about 6 foot 1 which in my opinion is not a tall defender given the number of 195 cm plus forwards that we see nowadays .
I just looked at the last five minutes of the 2012 GF and in that game LRT was awesome for us however I seem to remember he wasn’t viewed as a particularly big defender at the time but he was still 194 cm.
Have defenders shrunk or has the level of athleticism required to stay on a list increased ?
I don’t know for sure but I kind of miss the Gorillas who would keep a show pony full forward accountable.
PS I am in not in any way a fan of some of the tactics previously used by a FB to nullify the ability of a FF to impact a game but I do enjoy seeing two big bastards fighting over the flight of the ball and competing for it on the ground.
LRT was probably normal height for a KPD then (though he played most of the game forward till the brilliant effort at the end down back).
Where I think the issue going forward will be for our defence generally is the size of the KPFs coming through. The Kings are both over 200cm AND athletic. The Darcy father-son the Dogs get this year is apparently 204cm. Thilthorpe is 201cm. McKay is 200+cm. If CCJ goes to North, that gives them him at 200, Comden at 199 and Larkey at 198. Hipwood is 200cm. Essendon has a couple of 198-200cm forwards coming through. There's a new generation of bohemoths. Logan McDonald is quite short by comparison to these guys. Not that height is everything, but just to put into perspective.
We will need a companion or two to McCartin to keep them in check over the next decade.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

I must be in the minority as I believe both Fox and Melican are only squad players, not top 22. Both will not improve their skills and certainly not key position players. We need both in our list however as they cover injuries. Melican seems to be on his heels most of the time and can't hold a KP. Fox has pace and puts in 100% when he does play but isn't the future of the best 22 in our next premiership side. These are my thoughts and I'm sure other RWO's will disagree. Well, why not?
We have 7 that look close to definite departures: Dawson, Brand, Gray, Hewett, Ronke, Sinclair and Reid.
And 2 others that are not clear: Stephens and Ling.
I think 7 delistings is about right this year, unless we get a few extra draft picks. I figure we could take around 4 in the draft plus Paddy McCartin and reduce our list by 2 or 3. That should make our TPP look more manageable.
It would be great to be in the position of hunters instead of the hunted, come the 2022 trade season.Comment

The business of football can be harsh but I agree with you I think he is underrated and has those qualities that you mentionedComment

Yes, I think we keep Gould. Absolutely!
I'm growing in confidence that we'll take Paddy McCartin. He exactly fills a need of ours if he's up to it and comes cheap as chips. Then again, it wasn't encouraging that no club showed an interest at the mid season draft.
I would be content if we de-list Reid and Sinclair but I'm not sure if it will happen. I think, particularly if we delist Sinclair, we need another ruck.
I read that Ronke has been offered another year, which is a smidge surprising. All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

There are a few ruck possibilities we might take, even with CCJ and Chol off the board: Ladhams or Hayes at Port, Smith who's walked out on the Lions, various at the Giants, Lynch at the Pies (although young).Comment

I'd also like to keep Gould and hope we take Paddy.
Where did you read that about Ronke?Comment

The good thing is he can run all day every day. The bad thing is what he does with the ball when he gets it.
If it's pure run with, pick him. If it's a footy player we want in, don't.
I cannot remember a time watching him play, even in the two's, that I don't have a meltdown with his delivery. Both hand and foot, even hacking it forward....

I hate being even a little negative about our players and I do see positives with Clarke, but I feel he is a desperate last call up when he gets in the team.
