I wonder if the AFL may intervene in the JD case due to Adelaide seemingly failing to negotiate in good faith? Walking players to the PSD is viewed as a last resort whereas Adelaide seem to use this as a common occurrence (last season and possibly this one as well). Making an offer early in the trading period which everyone saids is low ball, putting a 24 hour time limit on it, and then making no further offers seems to indicate a clear failure to negotiate in good faith. It really undermines having a trade period and sets an unfortunate precedent that others might follow. At the very least, the approach may lead to reform of the trading rules.

Don't see what the AFL could do(maybe answered this below), it is a business negotiation between two clubs. The way I see it is that Adelaide have an obligation to JD, but both parties need to find an agreeable solution.

Rather than going the PSD route, maybe the AFL create a mediation system or tribunal to make a decision. Don't know how it would work tho'.

The AFL are a rule unto themselves. They change rules all the time. Currently, it is within the rules for Adelaide to pick up players for free via the PSD. It’s never really been a problem with less than 1% of player movement happening in the PSD. However, if Adelaide do it two years in a row with one of those players being especially valuable, it would not surprise me one bit if the AFL made some changes. They will particularly want to protect the Gold Coast with players like Lukosius and Rankine out of contract next year. Gil should be putting significant pressure on Adelaide now so he doesn’t have to make changes later.

No reform required. The Swans would not have netted Paul Roos without the PSD and he turned into being a significant figure.

In 1995 we picked up the best full forward of his generation and probably the best CHF of his generation for not a lot of draft capital.

We can’t complain now that it’s not working our way.

I think where the change will be is that if we have an interstate player that’s going into the final year of their contract then they must sign on with us before the trade period of their final year.

I think if they are going to free agency then it’s different as we get something and they have done their service.

We may have to say to Chad or J-Mac, “your final contract year is next year”, commit now until your free agency year or we put you on the trade table now”.

This may be harsh but we’re not doing another Jordan Dawson.

If anyone wants to study Ladhams have a look at 7 catch up and watch him play as the number one ruckman for Port Adelaide in the SANFL. He's certainly not dominant at that level.

Partners or family do not need to be drawn into this. Jordan made the decision for whatever reason.

We are all going through trying times, maybe she has an issue/ condition and so needs to be near her family (I don't know if she does and it's not our business to know).

If someone at the club had a similar situation to Dane Beams and his father, would you comment about that? Maybe a similar situation for his partner.

Jordan made the decision for whatever reason(s) and we can express our disappointment but we can leave out the immature name calling and bringing family into it without knowing the full facts, now it up to the club(s) to arrive at a suitable outcome. After all he has fulfilled his contract.

Of course I'm disappointed but it is his decision after all and life goes on. We now find another talent to replace him.

Dont mind Ladhams but prefer we went after someone else if we have the cash too.

Amartey is versatile and could be put anywhere but McLean is FF and relief ruck.

Only works if we didnt sign McLean which is more than likely hindsight given the Ladhams availability came later

My granddaughter works with Dawsons partner and had a "zoom" meeting with her , she is gone . They will not be back in NSW under any circumstances so forget about him re signing

Just spoke to someone whose child is a friend of JD and the child was chatting to JD at his home town yesterday. JD said that he doesn’t actually enjoy living in the city of Sydney.

Being a country boy initially myself, having lived in Melb for 8 years before moving to Adelaide, I can get my head around the mindset. I don’t want to live rural, so when I moved the Adelaide I was derided for (besides being a Victorian) initially referring Adelaide to “a big country town”. From JD’s perspective, Adelaide is likely a good size and Sydney (& probably Melbourne) are perhaps too big (apparently he referred to the city of Sydney as “too intense and too expensive”). Each to their own. For the right price I can live anywhere (even Adelaide) and perhaps for the right Godfather price, JD might have remained in Sydney). But he’s probably not worth that price.

Of course this is 3rd or 4th hand info so must be taken with a shaker full of salt, but I’m now resigned to losing him, as my faint hope was that he would do a RO’K or Paps, seems slim to none. I want us to get the best we can for him (and losing him for free in the PSD isn’t it).

With regards to his partner’s influence, they are a unit and it’s not unreasonable for her to have some input (goswannette is a significant factor why I’m still in Adelaide and I don’t begrudge her that one bit).

Anyone who thinks Ladhams doesn’t make our squad better is kidding themselves. Sure, question the cost but I don’t think you can question whether he makes our squad better.

The way I look at it is that Ladhams will likely be paid similar to what George Hewett would’ve been. Would you rather Hewett taking opportunities off our young midfielders in Campbell, Stephens, RB or Ladhams taking opportunities off McLean & Amartey while also being a much better ruck alternative if Hickey went down?

Go and have a look at the stats he put up when Lycett was suspended in Rounds 9 - 13 and Ladhams was #1 ruck. The game against Sean Darcy seems particularly impressive.

I’ve got no issues with Jordan wanting to go back to his home state . It’s Adelaide not willing to give even remotely his market worth . If I was the swans I would be ringing the managers of any Adelaide players who have a year to go on their contract and say we are interested . At the least it will make Adelaide pay overs . Two can play this game .

The AFL needs to fix this mess to many players are nominating teams of choice after only a few years in the system . Makes the draft a joke .
I’ll say it again if you want yo go home that’s fine but teams should have the option of dealing with all teams from that state to get true market worth .

In fact, we may get nothing at all. The difference of course is that Clark still has a year to go on his contract.

I think one lesson for us out of this and other recent player losses is that if we have a player coming out of contract who we think may want to go home to Mummy then we give it our best shot to re-sign him a year out. If he refuses, then we look to trade him out a year ahead when we have a better bargaining position. We have some big names coming out of contract next year by the way!

Our player trading ruled definitely need tweeking but at least we do not possess the problems faced by other sports. If you follow soccer, you would be aware of yesterday's big announcement that the investment vehicle owned by the Saudis is taking over Newcastle United. In a competition where there is effectively no salary cap or draft, another club with unlimited funds will be able to buy itself certain success over time. Imagine how mid-tier English Premier League clubs feel about that?

Expensive it may be (though when you're earning upwards of $500k pa that is less of a factor). But will be interesting to see how "intense" he finds it as an AFL footballer living in Adelaide. Sydney must be one of the most relaxed places to exist if you're in that industry.

Everything is relative. I've always found Sydney laid back, relaxed, friendly and safe. But then I'd spent the previous five or six years living and working in London before I arrived in Sydney.

I think you need to read the trade again. North are giving up Tarrant, pick 40, and a future 2nd round for CCJ, picks 42 & 47. Giving up a future 2nd which is likely to be pick 20 is quite a lot.

For some reason my mind didn't register the future second round pick. I agree that's a long way from "getting him for pretty much nothing" as I suggested earlier.

I don't think it's getting reamed based on the intrinsic value of CCJ. It's probably a fair valuation. But does seem overs in the sense that North did have the PSD sleeve up their card. I wonder why they didn't use it...
