I mentioned in an earlier post that I thought we had to take some responsibility for losing Dawson by not signing him earlier. We should be able to identify players who are at risk of leaving, and contract them at least to year 8 and RFA status.

It does seem in hindsight that there was a point earlier in the year that Dawson could/would have signed had we bent a little further - so in this instance I tend to agree with you.

Although the broader issue is that player agents know full well the issue you’ve outlined, and would respond with the ‘show me the money’ approach, saying you’ll have to pay a premium to lock the player away early.

I’m getting a bit nervous about the Lobb situation - if he does leave Freo, they have a lot of money saved up on top of Cerra going. That would mean a massive offer for McDonald you’d think next year, which even if he wants to stay will cost us plenty.

At least this news re-assures me that JD did indeed leave for family/going home reasons rather than financial. I had my doubts previously.

I don’t know either way, but I’m not sure the partner being a bit emotional in her farewell to colleagues proves anything. Even if the sole reason for leaving was the money, she probably would have got teary saying goodbye to people close to her.

I genuinely hope it the right decision for both of them - it’s hard to see it go badly for them if they’re closer to family and he has the security a 5-year contract.

Unfortunately it wasn’t the case for Darren Jolly but Jordan is now simply a past player and everything else is for him to worry about now.

If he really is unhappy in Sydney and that is the reason he's heading back to Adelaide, would signing a contract earlier in the year have avoided that unhappiness manifesting?

Impossible to know obviously, but I think it's also difficult to be sure we had an opportunity which we lost and which would have avoided the situation we're now in.

We missed the boat by not doing a deal early with the Cows and then using those extra picks to be involved in the head spinning pick dealing that has taken place. How Collingwood have ended up with a truck load of picks is as amazing as their trading last year was the opposite.

Small hope now for us to extract anything very useful out of this trade period.

Interesting insight into just how well we did trading for JK all those years ago on the AFL site now to be fair he was not as advanced at that stage of his career as Jordan is currently but we still did ok.

The all-time steal of trade period. Kennedy was moved from Hawthorn, along with Ben McGlynn, after playing just 13 games for the Hawks. In return Sydney gave back picks No.39, 46 and 70 for the duo. Kennedy is now an all-time great and surefire Hall of Famer, playing 266 games – and counting – for the Swans, winning the Bob Skilton Medal three times, being named All-Australian three times along with being club captain since 2017. Dawson’s Instagram account is back on public view (which suggests the abusive posts have stopped, thankfully). Both his and his partner’s posts and photos have all been taken down in Robe with family, friends and a new dog they now seem to own. Several photos taken on a long, empty beach in swimwear.

I think they are country people, with a close-knit group of family and friends in the south-east. I can understand that living in Adelaide will suit them better than Sydney. I just wish they had waited until retirement to make the move .... [emoji22].

Lol, I agree with Liz’s point that if Dawson doesn’t like ‘intensity’, he is walking into a firestorm in Adelaide’s footy scene. That 7 News report about Dawson is from Adelaide - has there been a single mention of the trade negotiations over Dawson on Sydney TV news?

In fact does anyone in Sydney other than Swans fans have any idea who Jordan Dawson is?

Plus having chosen the Crows over Port, Port fans will give him hell (as will quite a few Swans fans I suspect).

It does smack a little of desperation that Horse is contacting him now. I would say his chances of changing his mind are very low but its worth a try. The call could also be tactical in that should he not convince JD, at least he may be able to convince him to insist that he is not marched into the PSD. In this sense, the comment about the PSD draft is encouraging because it means Adelaide may actually be pushed by JD and his management to act like reasonable people and provide us with half-decent compensation - most likely that late first rounder for 2022. It generally does not pay in the long-term to screw everyone over. It usually comes back to haunt you.

You are right Steve- there’s no easy answer to re-signing a player when there’s only 1 year left on his contract. In Jordan’s case, his form towards the end of last year indicated a 2 year extension was warranted, but due to COVID and the uncertainties about the cap etc it is kind of understandable that it wasn’t done. I believe all our draftees who show promise should be re- signed for at least a 2 years extension in order to evaluate them properly. This is a risk and an expense our club has to meet. Jordan was into his second contract which could and should have been renewed at the beginning of this year, especially when dealing with a potential “go home factor” possibility arising. The club must have had an incling that this may be on the cards. As far as the $’s go, a fair offer at the end of last season or the beginning of this one, if not accepted would have let the cat out of the bag.

Bottom line: if a player doesn’t want to play with us any more, we have no choice but to let him go. If still under contract like Paps was, we can persuade him most times but can still pose problems We were lucky with Paps as with ROK!
