BREAKING NEWS:: KB says we want "good" players with our draft picks. Young midfielders or running half backs and potentially KPPs. 2021 Draft Preview with Kinnear Beatson (sydneyswans.com.au)

We perpetually seem to want running half backs. We have picked a lot that haven't worked out: Ling, Stoddart, Carruthers among others. But Blakey is doing well in that role, and so has JMac (although he is probably better as a winger).

for me running HBFs generally means outside players quick off the mark to break the zone or one on one defence

not a high success rate with these types for us but you would think Campbo will kill it along with Blakey if he we want either or both down back?

will be fascinating to observe our selections

"BREAKING NEWS:: KB says we want "good" players with our draft picks."

Well blow me down! Who would have thought? What a revelation. Seriously, thanks for the rest of the quote and the link but that introduction made me have a big laugh.

"Good" players ... KB is not wanting to give too much away. I would have been concerned if KB said he wanted "bad" players.

From the article: "... it would have to be an extremely talented young ruckman for us to look at one in the Draft. There is one, but all the intelligence that we’ve had so far is telling us that he won't be there at our first pick so we’re not spending too much time on him."

Would KB have been referring to Mac Andrew here? He's the only ruck in the top 10. If that "extremely talented young ruckman" is still available at our first pick, would KB consider him? Toby Conway would be a good choice at 31 if he was still available. Having a cousin or two in the team would help with player retention.

However, if end up with neither, it won't be problematic because our ruck needs are not a pressing issue at present. The club needs midfielders and defenders, not rucks.

What are the rules here? Have they changed substantially since the 2015 rules? (afl.com.au)

So far as I can tell, the rules give a fixed 197-point discount for bids after pick 18.

We have pick 69. This is currently worth 49 points. 197 + 49 = 246 points. Pick 52 is worth 246 points. So we can match at bid 52 or later with pick 69 without issues. To simplify the example, I'm ignoring the large number of picks that will be used up in father-son bid matching, and a couple of picks that will be used up for NGA prospects.

What if Anderson is bid on earlier? I'm trying to work out the range of picks where a bid on Anderson may give us a 2022 points deficit, and how large such a deficit could be. A bid in the 40s could be problematic. Will we do a live pick trade in that scenario, or would we just take the points deficit? What would be the effect of such a deficit?
I don’t think we will be too concerned about going into deficit if the bid comes in the third round. Remember that deficit points come off the equivalent round the following year so we might drop a pick in the 3rd round 2022.

I was not aware of this particular rule. Picks in the 40s would be in the third round. However, we currently lack a round three pick in next year's draft.

Even better. The points would then be deducted from our 4th round.

Or we are required to trade a third round pick back in before next year’s draft?

We've been allocated 6 ND picks so that means we have 32 players contracted to the main list for 2022. I'll have a look later to see if those 32 players are obvious or if we still have ? over the list status of some players.

As Liz noted, we've gone with minimum main list size for a number of seasons now as a way of staying under the TPP. A big drop in Buddy's salary in 2022 but that drop may have already been spent on back-loading other contracts. I can't remember if the VFL has announced the TPP for 2022?

If Anderson is attracting interest from other clubs, we have to be careful as to when we pass on a pick as after that we are locked out from matching. We would obviously know from Anderson who else has shown interest in him.

We obviously nominated a good number of academy players so they will be available for free in the Rookie Draft, assuming no one else selects them late in the ND..

Reasonably well-founded rumour that we have visited Charlie Molan and told him we are keen to use pick 31 to draft him.

Nope. Deficit comes off the points of the first pick you hold after the corresponding round in the following year.

Doesn't appear in any "experts" draft lists that I've seen to date

A good solid midfield prospect who seems like the kind of player the Swans would go for. I wouldn't be surprised if the rumours were true. Less flashy than some others, but less likely to be a bust.
