Yes, it was interesting that the main reason that he was taken late, was that people thought his athletic ability wasn't up to AFL standard. However, they didn't take into account, that his pace and endurance was compromised by him working full-time as a plumber. Nor it seems, did they take into account, that his athletic ability improved once he started to take time off.

I think something similar happened with Gulden. Early on, I think the opinion was formed, that he was a bit too small to be a top level player. And that opinion didn't change much, even though he grew a few centimetres in his draft year. Hence, bargain for us! I think Leek Alleer might be a similar bargain in this year's draft. Being an over-ager, his wasn't included in the early draft prognostications. Now, even though his form and his athletic prowess suggest that he should be at least a first rounder, most experts are still rating him in the 25-40 range.

      Great read on Tom Papley.

Think we're in for a really interesting draft given the last two years of limited under age footy.

Yes, when people look back on it, in a few years time, there'll probably be more bargains and busts than usual.

And I was mildly amused by the Beatson quote at the end of the Papley article, where he admitted to making a few phone calls, to give the impression that we were more interested in players other than Papley.

It's amazing to see the use of maskirovka for a rookie draft.
On the other hand it might have been simpler if we'd taken Papley rather than a wanna be rascist like Leonardis.

Interesting that neither Corey Warner nor Leek Alleer have made Cal Twomey's November draft ranking (Top 35).

I'm probably more for taking the best available this year than in any precious draft. It we take 3 players in the ND, I think that one should be a KPP. Assuming we're going to add McCartin and Anderson to our list as well, that would make for a good balance.

Yes, I noticed that Leonardis was named in that story. I was hoping to get through the discussion, without any mention of him. Even if he was taken in the 50s, it does appear to be a misguided pick.

I do find it surprising that Alleer isn't there, as his SANFL performances look excellent to me. I tend to think that primacy bias is contributing to him being underrated. Although it could be argued, that because he's a couple of years older than the rest of the draft, his form should be judged a bit more harshly.

He was part of an anti Goodes group on Facebook . Obviously didnt do our homework on what kind of character he is .

I think a lot of us thought we had picked up a bargain after his first game. I don't think we have seen the best of him yet even though he has been bloody exciting to date.

I was not aware of that, TB. Leonidias was certainly a huge draft bust for us. Not only did he never play a senior game, he rarely made the best in the reserves from memory.

Can anyone confirm if I am I right in thinking that the Swans currently have 5 spots available on the main list and 2 on the rookie list one of which is meant for Taylor. I am assuming McAndrew was offered a 18 month contract and that Ryan Clarke remains unsigned. I am unaware of any rookie elevations. Presumably we will enter the new year with 1 spot vacant like last year. Thanks in advance.

The story broke the night he was drafted , part of a Facebook group , must 've been awkward on his first day ! He had attitude problems all the way thru to his delisting . A ratbag

I'm not sure anyone here can arrive at a definitive state of our numbers given the unknowns around who is main list and rookie list, too much rubberyness around the list status of a few players. You know how many main list vacancies you have when the AFL gives the final draft picks, we will have a pick for every main list vacancy at draft time, if it's 16, 31, 39, 70 we have four main list vacancies, if it's 16, 31, 39, 70 & 80' something then we have five main list vacancies.

It's been a while since I was job hunting, but don't employers check prospective employees social media output before making a a job offer these days?
