I see players like Goater and Chesser coming up around our pick 16/18. Van Rooyen is still in the mix. If we recruit Paddy McCartin, then I would be less inclined to focus on a defensive back with our first pick and would be happy to go with a versatile midfielder, and use our 2nd round picks to find another KPD. I think there are good opportunities through the 1st 2 rounds of the draft this year.
Whoever gets drafted, they're going to find it hard to break into our 22 the first couple of years at the club, unless they really show something special.Comment

I am as disappointed at his exit as anyone, but I accept that players can change clubs. Workers can change employers, players should be able to change clubs, and anything different is restraint of trade. Dawson didn't handle his exit very well, but I agree that we should move on.
Moving on means different things to different people.....so one thing I will suggest to everyone is, please desist in telling others how to think and behave. That's for the mod's (as frustrating as that can be sometimes!).Comment

Does anyone have a view on whether we should try and get out of the 2021 1st round and improve our draft hall for 2022?
We could draft the minimum two players in the 2nd round while having more draft firepower for 2022.
The reality is that we three brilliant 2nd year prospects in Gulden, McDonald and Campbell. Taking only two 1st year players next year wound not be the worst option.
In 2022, if the draft and acedemy crop is strong then we use the picks. If the crop is not strong then we can swap some picks out to 2023.

May I suggest that 'moving on' does not equal forgiveness. I've moved on, because I understand the reality of the situation.....he ain't coming back. Does this mean I've forgiven him? Does it mean I'll forget the way he blindsided us.....exposing his dishonesty? NO.

So much negativity and criticism on this forum of which unfortunately I am now contributing to. I hate it and the judging of people.

You can add others such as Gould, Stephens and Sheather to the list of existing youngsters we would be looking to give more opportunities.
We have for some time now very deliberately given our best draftees games in their first year - I think strategically to have them feel more embedded in our program and reduce the likelihood they would be tempted to look elsewhere when we try and re-sign them.
If we are drafting players this year that we think will be way behind a long list of other promising youngsters already on our list, we risk having the issues GC and GWS have had with the revolving door of youngsters coming in, not getting a game, and then either delisted 2 years later or (if they’re any good) being picked off by other clubs.
I understand the argument of Ludwig and others with the ‘it’s better to get $1 today than $1 in a year from now’, but there are many other factors.
Relative quality of drafts for one - if you could get $1 today or a gold coin (ie. could be $1 or $2) next year, would you defer a year and possibly get $2 compared to having $1.20 (1 year of ‘interest’ or development)?
Knowing you have to make a 2-year commitment is also a factor. We can’t just say “what the hell, we’ll just draft 3 this year regardless and if in a year we think any of them were a mistake, or at least are going to struggle to get a game for at least another year, we’ll delist them and replace them with 3 more at the 2022 draft”.
Seasons 2023-24 is where we’ll have at least a couple of retirements and more spots to give new draftees a few games.
But if they think there are some gems we can get this year, then go for it and load up now.Last edited by Steve; 17 October 2021, 12:13 PM.Comment

So it's okay for you to be critical of Dawsons comments and behaviour but not for others to do the same to do. Can't have it both ways.

A little reminder....Forum: (NOUN) a meeting or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged. This exchange will inevitably garner debate.....

Certainly fishy. Perhaps his nickname should be changed from Raphus cucullatus to the less wordy Coryphaena?Comment

Talking to a Port mate of mine (yes it is possible to be friends with one) and he mentioned that Rockliff on MMM Adelaide had said Ladhams spat the dummy after being delivered a few home truths about his off field behaviour in his end of season review. Was not willing to take it on board so was told he could look elsewhere. We're usually pretty good at sorting out bad apples, with the exceptions of Talia and Taylor. Here's hoping we can put 2m Pete on the straight and narrow..............Comment
