There is a certain standard of literacy that they all seem to have in common, mysteriously. Plus they all love to use business analogies, and love American sports. Spooky, if you ask me.

awesome player for us for many years and still had a few years left in the tank when he left to go to the Bulldogs as evidenced by how
many goals he kicked for them. I wish he had kicked them for us.
I think what’s been under appreciated in Barry’s difficult final Swans years was that he was going through a relationship breakdown that impacted him. What would have been doubly difficult for Barry was watching his ex take up with one of the celebrity personal trainers at the time.

Imagine your love life being splashed on the pages of Sydney Confidential. I think Stuart Maxfield went through a similar circumstance in 2005. The Swans showered Stuart with love, support and always said how Stuart build the culture.

With Barry his off field difficulty led to some angry moments on field. Unfortunately Roos, Kirk, The Leadership Group, a young player and most supporters decided to lay into Barry like he was a naughty school boy who was on his last chance. Barry was duly expelled like a schoolboy and I felt very uneasy about his treatment at the time from the coaching staff. Unfortunately the supporter base fell in line with Principal Roos and Deputy Principal Kirk and the champion was expelled without a “what” being raised.

Earlier in his Swans career, Barry was well supported by the players and coaches despite his multiple indiscretions. It wasn’t until the bail of hay broke the camel’s back with repeated and more severe offences that the trust was harder to gain.

You justify Barry’s “angry moments” by his social life (and relationship breakdowns are tragic), but what about his reports in the early Swans years? How about when he was at StKilda? Barry seems to have always had an angry streak. That’s Barry. That’s part of what made him as good as he was at his best. It’s also what made him as bad as he was at his worst. I take him at face value. A great player and a great Swan. A man with his flaws and demons and nothing can justify some of his actions. He might not own them at the moment but he typically and usually does and that shows some character. But, ironically, Barry isn’t a Saint.

Maxfield didn’t lash out with physical violence despite whatever relationship issues you are eluding to. He didn’t bring the club into disrepute. And such was his relationship with the club, coaching staff and players, he remained an integral off field part of the club for a decade after he retired. You cannot see the difference?

You’re a fool if you don’t think many “what’s” were raised toward the end of his time with us. His departure wasn’t a flippant decision or taken lightly.

“Principal Roos and Deputy Principal Kirk”?

          Please grow up.

So do remind me when Stuey Maxfield king hit someone on the field? Oh that's right....

Give it up man - your summer crusade in your mind has been a noble one, for many of us however its been a long and drawn out bore.

You need to stop being so dogmatic in your iron clad opinion that Barry left Roos and Kirk no choice.

The reason Kirk did that press conference and said that famous “trusting Barry with my kids”quote was to provide “air cover” for Roos and the coaching staff who had decided to move Barry on by that point.

The media was carefully planned and Kirk delivered for his coaches.

Why did they need to sent the captain out to give Barry a public kicking? The coaches didn’t want to own moving on Barry on their own.

Sad way to treat a champion.

Nathan Buckley moved on champions but never sent out his captain to the media to give him air cover.

Clarkson moved on champions and owned all the decisions.

What I find difficult to understand as well was that Swans then went to the 2009 draft period and negotiated hard with the Bulldogs for a 3rd round pick. Having decided to move him on in such a public manner they should have let him pass him pass for nothing.

The club is always bigger than any individual, even when the person is a champion.
Barry let himself and the club down too many times- maybe he wasn’t treated as you would have liked, but please get over it and let it go now. You’re flogging a dead horse!

That's ok, you clearly just don't understand. I'm done trying to explain this to you. Go ahead, keep making wild assumptions (and judgements) about the coaches and players that delivered the premiership that many thought they would never live to see.

Buckley tried to move on players by lying to them. We were honest with Hall. I'd rather we be honest than be deceitful.

Barry Hall was no champion. Good, above average footballer, yes, but no champion. Champions don't eye gouge and king hit. The word champion is used rather loosely these days.

Totally agree, as Jack Dyer would say "A good average footballer"

Same as "Role Model" is used too freely with anyone who can chase a bag of wind and makes a mozza by doing their job.

Nico, what your saying is that Leigh Mathews is no champion because he king hit a few guys along the way?

Without Barry and his elite play from 2003 - 2006 there would be no premiership. He was the key forward, he was the forward line ruckman, he was the physical battering ram, he was the protector and he made us all believe. He was the reason that Nick Davis, Ryan Okeef, Adam Goodes, Micky O and Adam Schneider were good forwards from 2003-2006. Hall made space for the other forwards, he drew coverage and he allows those guys to have one on ones.

                            No Barry, no 2005 premiership

No Barry, no Paul Roos leadership retreats

                            No Barry, no Captain Kirk

No Barry, no Leo Barry you star.

                            Hall and undisputed champion.

I actually think BBBH is a champion footballer....but like Matthews, he is a flawed champion. Matthews has a big stain on his career....and so does Barry. His stains put the club in positions it did not desire or deserve, they could not be ignored and eventually his position at the club became untenable. His fault, not the clubs. You seem to forget that one of his stains almost had him out of the 2005 flag winning team. Almost no flag at all then because of his impetuosity? What a legacy that would have been.....

Roos 'leadership retreats', as you put them BS, could have followed many face to face meetings of support which ultimately were ignored by the recipient and who ultimately brought about his own demise. You have no idea what went on within the clubs walls. He seems to have accepted his role in this demise and likely now believes that the YU you speak of was probably spot on. He has grown as a human.....maybe you should too. This dead horse has been flogged enough now.....

No one player turns other players into 'good forwards' by themselves. They work as a team, all contributing to the ability as a team to collectively deliver. Two of those players are 300+ gamers in their own right, another just short. And two enigmatic players that at their best could turn matches and both had very fine AFL careers - as they both did during that final series.

You only have to look to 2012 to see a 'power champion forward' in a traditional sense is not a necessity to win a flag.

Barry was a key cog - sure. But these were all almighty footballers in their own right, and deserve to be recognised as all part of a great machine, not just a bunch of players towballing on the coat tails of another player. Y

ou can make an argument Hall was a key part of that, and no one is going to argue. But he wasn't the be all and end all. And you certainty can not claim that without Hall there wouldn't have been a premiership - that is swaying into a very difficult world of predicting anything on the basis of revisionist history - in short, just a pissing into the wind.

You can justify your ongoing campaign all you want, but most recognise the hole is getting pretty close towards breaking through to China now.
