Even though he was a top 10 pick, even Geelong dont think he's worth the $700k / p.a. for two years, or $500 p.a. over 4 years, so GC have to throw in a pick 7 for them to take him.
So he must be almost borderline delist material. Geelong are basically buying pick 7 for $1.4m, and Bowes is the steak-knives.

But it is crooked that they get to restructure his deal. If you take the extreme, why dont they restructure it for $100k for 14 years: almost nothing as far as cap pressure... Just to get pick 7
Great post , the only thing is Bowes can actually play baring injury last year he was a more than handy player. Geelong basically are going to get two top ten picks for a future 2nd or 3rd Rounder out of the Suns deal . Plus spread the deal out over multiple years which to me surely shouldn’t be allowed but it will be . The equalisation of the draft is now an absolute shambles . The AFL wonders why the numbers watching has dropped off , it’s basically become a smaller version of the EPL where it’s the rich clubs that dominate year after year

      David King is the worst.
Any team gaining a player from a lowly team: " How great are these destination clubs"
Any team gaining a player from Norf: "Norf should play hardball".

      clown.

I never thought I would say it but I am feeling sorry for GWS. That new coach has quite a job to do! He will have lots of early draft picks to utilise but with no guarantees any draftees will stay much beyond 2 to 4 years.

GWS will never rise above mid table maybe lowish in the finals. They couldn't keep the team together during their golden years so will have little hope of holding players as a non finalist. The Victorian clubs will keep coming for their 'homesick' players who want to play regularly in front of big crowds, not 10k at Giants Stadium. It's the law of diminishing returns working off an ever lower base. Can't even offer the lifestyle Gold Coast can!

It's discussed on the front page of the AFL site today - but in the context of some clubs (ie Geelong) trying to be excused from it applying to them.

Major deals hinge on trade fine print, should Power pursue tall?

Someone really needs to tell Geelong that They Can't Have Everyone.

It's hardly worth bothering learning the rules. If you're an AFL favourite, you can always get an exemption. Otherwise, you're up for a trade ban.

Didn’t we get a trade ban despite not breaking any rules?

                  - - - Updated - - -

Looks like GWS will bundle up 2-3 of their 5 first round picks to get pick 1 and grab Cadman. And potentially unlock the Norf/Port/Weagles love triangle,

It is very boring being a Swans supporter this year. There’s not even a juicy rumour to keep us entertained!

Yes, boring in a nice way. A great young list and looking to bring in more young talent via the draft.

We were boring in the trade period last year and came second this year and won 18 games. Gotta look at the upside man.

why would the afl allow tasmania in, where are they going to get players from. North are a basket case as are GWS and Suns with their players trading some and in suns case throwing in pick 7. Geelong get it all. Ludicrous situation the Tas move at least swans have raised uestions about it.

Yeah. Tassie will need GC/GWS style compromised drafts for another 3-5 years.

I know, I know. it’s about building the best list

There’s a false logic among the punditry that the more you trade the more you improve your list.

They were all talking about how the Saints were big “winners” a few years back when they went beserk.

This doesn’t stop part of me having a little bit of FOMO it is a bit like being a kid in a toy shop, this time of year.

Everyone looks so exciting … until you get them home and out of the packaging

About every ten years or so MW we'll bring in a big power forward (don't hear that phrase much these days but I've
always liked it) with extra horsepower but mostly we're just fine tuning the engine and tinkering with the chassis and
panels. Our team of mechanics have usually been able to reduce good results out on the track.

We actually had a reputation for being a great club to move to.

The list of players who came to the Swans and thrived is a pretty illustrious one including our newly retired former captain JPK.

And our success was built on judicious trading … maybe this time next year
