Pre-season games have been notoriously crap for us for 20 years, so I won't be fussed by this or Carlton.

I only watched bits, but: It was good to see McInerney back to his hard-running best. Chad was good, as you'd expect. Logan kept covering ground and competing - even if he didn't haul in a lot and was subject to some bad delivery. Gulden = tick. Thought Campbell showed good bursts of speed and ball use, so hopefully he breaks through this year.

Erol and Heeney also excellent in the first half Loved some of things Rowbottam did too. Guilden already such an important player for us.

Brisbane are a very good team - young Ashcroft might end up having a better first year than Nick Daicos.

OK first half, disappointing second. Three weeks to get things fine tuned. Next Friday night will be interesting. A few observations -

Looks like Errol will be prominent at CBs this season, he was very good today, just so smart and clean with the ball.

McAndrew's tap work was very good against mature experienced rucks, still raw but a lot of potential with that reach. He's a goer too for a bloke 210cm

Edwards looks a likely type, still raw, but impressed with what I saw, big upside at that size and athleticism

Chad had a big game but was quite rusty. Hope he's not drinking the bathwater!

        Ashcroft is already a gun

During the reserves match, Amartey, Melican, Sheather, Cunningham, Papley and Magor were doing a long running session behind the goals and around the boundary.

Pretty disappointing result but as others have said we never seem to do well in pre season games.....and hopefully it has nothing to do with negative GF hangover. I would have liked to see a closer result though. What lead to 'no proper ruckman'? Did we start with one and they got injured or did we not have one selected?

Didn't see any of the match, but I am hoping that Errol spends more time as an inside mid. And I've always thought that both McAndrew and Edwards have potential. So, hopefully McAndrew can have an injury free season and Edwards can get enough game time, for them to fulfil that promise.

Young McAndrew played, and according to the AFL site, did well against McInerney and Fort. Hickey and Ladhams are both injured, with Hickey likely to miss the first few weeks of the season, and Ladhams is being assessed next week.

Thanks deja....hopefully Hickey hangs in there for the season and Ladhams comes on better than he did last year.

Thanks Sean, have you any comments on who is showing out in the seconds game?

Presumably players who just got a few minutes late in the main game (Warner, Mitchell) then fronted up for the VFL game too?

Brisbane ‘should’ be contenders in a serious way this year.

Ashcroft will be at least the equal of Daicos, and is already a better runner. Dunkley gives Neale the companion he needs inside. Gunston, if he stays fit, is a major upgrade on that hack McStay (still can’t believe what the Pies gave him). And then McKenna is a free hit with something they need, which is back half speed.

A lot depends on injuries, whether Daniher is a head case or not this year, etc - but I’d easily see them in the GF.

The VFL game was 3 quarters. I think we only had 9 listed players involved.

Blakey and McLean played 2nd and 3rd quarters. I think Mitchell and Vickery might have just played a bit of the 1st quarter. Rankin, Gould, Owens, Warner and Hall-Kahan seemed to play all 3 quarters.

It appears we have another assistant coach for the reserves, Oliver Condon!!! It's in the Reserves writeup on the Swans AFL website

Wasn’t a disaster and I am sure they got some learnings out of it, really worried about our big man stocks

Maybe some lessons too. (Sorry, it's a bugbear of mine as is 'Versus' being turned into a verb. ie. We verse Carlton next Friday.)
