For pretty much the whole game we had no physical presence in our forward line. McAndrew and/or Owen just standing hoping the ball lands in their hands doesn't count as forward presence. And yet, despite this, the primary means of delivery forward was the trademark long bomb.

Sheldrick couldn't have done much more - indeed, at times he almost had to try to do too much.

Warner had a few moments and worked decently hard in an unfamiliar role.

And Kirk - for a 19yo top-up - had some very nice moments. His overhead marking for his size is pretty good. I would have him in the top handful of Swans on the ground, which is a bit damning for most of the rest.

I was going to make the point that the reserves at least mirror our outstanding bomb it at all costs forward tactic perfectly. Poor old Owen and McAndrew. Despite the horrendous miss, I thought Owen did some okay thing, and led okay at times.

Two massive moments in that last quarter that really hurt - the Owen miss, and then the Warner HTB (great tackle) in the middle that then got reversed and a 50 added for something off camera in our forward line. Never got back into it from there.

Sheldrick made a strong case for inclusion next week if Roberts is out as expected, and Warner had some good moments - although his disposal and decision making at times leaves a bit to be desired.

That was a really poor performance by Will Edwards. He was physically bigger than Brandon Ryan, but was incapable of stopping him from taking marks (and kicking goal). 10 Marks and 6 goals from Ryan. That was the biggest difference in the game.

Yes, Owen missing from right in front proved to be a momentum killer. And Kirk is capable of some eye catching marks. I don't know if you saw the mark of the year type grab he took a few weeks ago, but it was very similar to the spectacular Papley mark.

Unfortunately this side is suffering from a variety of problems. Due to injuries, there's a lack of experience and week to week continuity. Also, those injuries and our preference to draft for outside pace, means that there's real structural issues. Edwards was our only KPD and while he did some good things, is not ready to lead the defence. Sheldrick was our only VFL/AFL level inside mid. While he had an excellent game, his only assistance was from the academy inside mids, Cleary and Kirk, (who both had pretty good games) and a variety of outside mids rotating through the contests. While the closest thing that we had to a KPF were the resting ruckmen. Which wasn't ideal, as I think Hickey was resting largely on the bench, while McAndrew and Owen still seem to have a fair bit to learn. Though I expect both to improve as the season progresses.

On individual performances, Sheldrick was the standout. He's the sort of combative mid that we need. On combative, I thought Sheather did well down back. It'll be interesting to see if they decide to give him some midfield time, to add a bit more grunt, or whether they see his future as a lockdown defender? I thought Hall-Kahan used the ball well. Warner had plenty of good involvements, but missed a few too many targets to be an excellent game. McAndrew had many taps to advantage and did a few nifty things in general play. Hickey's return was encouraging. Vickery was probably the best of the recent crop, while some of the lesser lights tried hard.

On the negative side. I tend to think that Rankin is already running out of time. I don’t recall him having a high possession game and he makes a few too many mistakes with the possessions that he does get. Also, Konstanty had a disappointing debut. Missed a couple of chances early and was hardly sighted for the rest of game. Though I assume that there's plenty of scope for improvement.

This coach Damian Truslove seems a real winner. Not only does he seem incapable of developing basic skills in young talent, the amount of 50 meter penalties and reverse free kicks was an embarrassment. Totally undisciplined play. Boy its going to be some dark days ahead.

IMO Warner is depth at best. I don't think he'll ever be someone that will be in our side when we are at full strength. Yes we have players down on form at the moment that he could replace for a few weeks, but can you really name any of our best 22 that he will overtake in the next 5 years?

I hope the kid proves me wrong, and he definitely has some ability, but at the time his drafting felt like a reach to keep Chad happy in Sydney...

IMO Warner is depth at best. I don't think he'll ever be someone that will be in our side when we are at full strength. Yes we have players down on form at the moment that he could replace for a few weeks, but can you really name any of our best 22 that he will overtake in the next 5 years?

If you can name our best 22, then I shall nominate who Warner will overtake in the next 5 years.

Hickey and Sheldrick should be ready to play AFL next week and I would also give HHK a shot.

Cooper Vickery finally coming alive. We have a few other players who might build into the season.Guys like Magor and Owen.

Vickery looks good, just needs time. Major looks OK too. Unfortunately very little in the side that will be ready for selection this year.

To be honest other than Sheldrick (and Hickey obviously) there is next to nothing in the VFL who is banging the door down to play senior football. Which is a scary prospect considering our performance last night...

I would add Sheather.He looks like the type to excel at a higher level. Besides, he might confuse the opposition because he's a Heeney clone.

Well players who I think will be similar in role would be Mcinerney, Stephens (best chance), Florent, Gulden, Lloyd, Campbell, Rowbottom, Sheldrick, Roberts & Chad.

They are the players I would think who play similar roles/positions that C. Warner would play in our senior side if he can cement a spot.

I would also expect us to draft more talent (hopefully) that will come into our side ahead of him.

While I would love to be proven wrong, I just don't think he has the foot skills to excel at the top level, although we do like players who just kick it as far as they can into the fwd line and hope for the best so who knows! [emoji12]

It's not the 22 in 5 years I was expecting, but of the 10 players mentioned - but I am confident that Warner2 will certainly have overtaken Lloyd by then.
