If you want to fix KP holes via the draft it’s going to takes many years to do so.

We have three options for KPPs

        1) do nothing
        2) bring in mature players
        3) draft and wait 3+ years

If we are “in the window” (whatever that means) we have to choose 2
It's all very well to say we should recruit experienced players to fill in the gaps but you can only recruit whoever is available and wants to come to you. Clearly we had our eye on Himmelberg, may have had a strong interest in Barrass, are probably exploring the Grundy option, but if the players available comprise Stewart, Howard, McKay etc, it may not be a clear cut decision to recruit experience.

There were plenty of groans on here when we recruited Clarke, Taylor, Gray a few years back (with varying degrees of justification, now that we have the benefit of hindsight). There was a general lack of enthusiasm when Hickey arrived (which we now know to be misplaced) and a lukewarm reception to Francis (jury out).

I liked Kennedy, Teddy, McGlynn fairly quickly when we traded them in ????

I must say I was not keen on them much at all based on their prior games in AFL

So the value players are a 50/50 me thinks based on all them over the years traded in.

Totally get what u are saying Liz though.

It’s really hard to entice players to Sydney versus side stepping from the Hawks to Geelong like Issac Smith……. and goes on to be a gun choice and a Norm Smith medal winner at 33yrs of age out on the wing !!!

          Wouldn’t it be nice ????

Thanks for that, for some reason the widget to add hyperlinks had disappeared as an option?

There is footage of him online earlier in the year kicking four goals in the final quarter to win a game for the (other lesser) Swans. The game I watched he was getting crucial touches all over the ground (as well as kicking four goals in a losing side) - it was damn impressive. Think he's 22 so not sure what's happened in the interim from national draft to here.

I get the feeling you're not a Mackay fan, which is fair enough, he's never been AA or even in the squad to the best of my knowledge and this year in particular he's been a bit meh. But he's shown the ability to be a very solid defender and at 200+ cm and 100+ kg he's like nothing we've got. It's the fact of free agency that the "free" bit only relates to the draft picks; inevitably you end up paying the player more than it feels right.

Personally, I think he'd be a big step up on Melican, Gould, etc.

I'm not a fan of Mackay either. Just watched the North - GC game and he did not stand out nor was amongst their best in a winning side. Hopefully he will re-sign with North and we can move on

If only we could get someone to do a Jesse Hogan and tear up their existing overly large contract.

Haven’t drafted anyone for years and the chickens are now coming home to roost. Now looking at Grundy and Smith from Dogs who will cost more draft picks and just add to their troop of geriatrics.
Geelong are long overdue for their turn at the bottom of the ladder. The last time they finished in the bottom 25% of the ladder was when they finished 11th out of 12 in 1975.

Next year could be interesting for them if they have an outbreak of calf injuries (a common injury among older players). Bottom four for Geelong next year?

McKay is a hard one to call he seems more hype than substance, Grundy has a body of work that shows at his best he would make us a better team.

At a million dollars a year Grundy is a no for mine. Someone like a Sweet from the doggies would costs much less and do a good job.

Mackay I think will be too hard to resist if we get him for zero draft picks.

I’d be keen to try and get the GC pick 4 as well as our first rounder. Our two second rounder plus a future first would go close. Draft at least one Key Forward with those picks plus Cleary and another mid

Deaft at least one (or more than one) key forward?
Do you expect one or maybe even two of Logan, McLean, Amarty and Buller to be complete washout for the Swans? I see all four as dstinctly promising.

Its been done to death but the whole point with Grundy and how a guy on his level is even a consideration is that he is on 900k, Pies are paying 250k and the deal would seemingly have Melb paying a portion of the remaining 650k.

So Grundy at closer to 500k is an absolute steal

                            - - - Updated - - -

With Mckay, we are in a sleers market so with that comes the teality of having to play overs.

If he was as good as Paddy you would be more than happy to have however, no one would have wanted to pay 700k for Paddys output. So closer to 500k is better, give him 6yrs no problem

I note your comments on the possible sizeable discount on Grundy. Educated guess rather than hard data/inside knowledge?
