Why wouldn't Stephen's manager advise him to consider other options. At the moment, most of this year in fact, he is not guaranteed a spot in the starting 22 and it is hard to see where his best position is in our current structure. As a no. 5 draftee that must so disappointing and depressing! If another club can offer him more certainty why shouldn't he be open to that. At the moment he faces a future at the Swans similar to that of Wicks, Clarke and Francis.

It’s another incredible circumstance in footy
Fischer didn’t turn out as well as expected for Adelaide and he was one of their all time highest picks in the draft
But a young nsw boy who played a litttle in the GWS academy goes and cracks in for a KPD spot and Adelaide got him effectively for free !
Nick Murray…….I wonder if he wants to come back to NSW ???

Stephen’s for Murray ?"be tough, only when it gets tough"

My thoughts exactly. If a contract is in front of a player the whole year and his management don't to bite then he's gone. McLean's management is doing the same thing but with him it's a matter of getting a little more not moving on

Hope you're right. Not that he is in the same class, but I'm still carrying scar tissue from the Dawson episode.Comment

That is simply not true. While all of these have Sydney taking Flanders (some after bidding on Green), he is mentioned by the most credible of these (as Twomey has contacts within the industry) as being under consideration, not just by the Swans at five but by other clubs with picks shortly after.

We used pick 5. Which should be for a substantially better player than pick 10.
Right now, a redraft of 2019 would have him past pick 20. Even Jake Riccardi at pick 51 is ahead of him.
He has been a waste of pick 5. His market value is probably between pick 15 ( potential) to pick 20 (reality).
If we get something like that, take it

Correction. If we get Anything better than pick 15, take it. Otherwise hold him. He's on track to be in our best 22 in the coming years, and a pick 20 is still a good player.Comment

Stephens was at best predicted to go pick 10 or later.

Here is an article on SEN that lists every AFL player linked to a trade or free agency move in 2023.
Sydney has two players listed: Dylan Stephens and Hayden McLean. Of course, this isn't telling us anything we don't already know.
I've linked the article to provide some perspective. Six clubs have two players listed; no club has fewer. St Kilda has six players on the list, four clubs have five players. The average is 3.4 players per club (61 players total).
Some of the players are given as links with more information. This may be useful later."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment
