The AFL supposedly instituted these separate contracts - rather than a payment via the new club - to avoid what happened in the Treloar deal, where after he was traded the Pies went 'well, we only meant $200K not $300K' and it became an extended mediation.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

The Herald Sun has a new top 40 and lists Cleary at 33. Here's the descriptor:
"While he might not have the level of polish of some of the other midfielder’s in this year’s draft class, Cleary does know how to find the footy and plays with a lot of heart. He is a quality transition runner who has the ability to get involved in attack but also has a great wiliness to tackle and defend. His attack on the ball or any opponent who has got it is ferocious and Cleary is able to impact both inside and outside the contest with his run. He impressed during the under-18 national championships with the Allies and was named in the midfield in the All-Australian team. Cleary has since gone on to play some good VFL football for Sydney, including in round 20 when he recorded 22 disposals (12 contested), six clearances and seven score involvements against GWS."'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

No, apparently. I saw some extensive reporting on this and the Pies have a separate contract with him that extends as far as his prior contract with them.

So he still has a deal with Pies for $250k
Get Melb to go $250k
We give him 4yrs $400

And the door opens, with Hickey announcing he'll retire at year's end.
God love him - he was an integral part of our rise in 2021, which along with 2003 was one of the most enjoyable years - outside the premiership years - I've had watching footy.

This is correct, and if my memory serves me correctly Melbourne were picking up in the vicinity of $600 to $650K over the duration of the contract. Would be a great pick up for the Swans if they can do it with a pick 2, which again from memory is what he cost Melbourne.
It would certainly go a long way to helping solve our clearance problems if we could pull this off. Grundy was ranked in the top two ruckmen last and certainly knows his ruck craftComment

Loved Hickey.
Thought it was an absolute mistake bringing him to the club, but he had a late career revival with us and will be remembered as one of my faves from the last few years. Did think he'd go on for another year as he started to come good the last few weeks.
Surely we go hard for Grundy now. Ladhams is not the answer.Comment
