Hickey may agree about his own career, but I didn't see anyone agreeing we should shed 3 rucks in one go, and brng in 1.
Owens has had a single season hasn't he? I can't see him going unless we bring in another tyro.
With regards Mensa, but I can't see who'd take him. The other club after Grundy is apparently Port - they surely won't want him back. Don't get me wrong, he's giving me the irrits big time, but I'm not sure McAndrew is ready even as a backup yet.

SMH/Age reporting we’re favourites to land Ben McKay, triggering a story we’d be paying so much the Roos would get pick 2 in the draft. However that’s ultimately speculation from other clubs and the journalist. Knowing the Swans, they tend to keep their plans very close to their chest so if something entirely left field happens instead it wouldn’t surprise.

If we could get McKay as a FA and Grundy for a second rounder that would go a long way to fixing our two biggest problems and leave us plenty to take to the draft.

Tom Doedee unhappy with the offer from the Crows and now on the market too, although he’ll miss a big chunk of 2024 with his ACL.

Getting McKay and Grundy would put us right in premiership contention. Would be amazing. Doubt we will get one of them, let alone both though.

I suppose it depends how long can we carry contracts like these two will demand

But they would definitely help our cause fix our 2024 weakness’s……a lot

Maybe we can front end a contract for McKay that still allows north to get the second pick ?
Could possibly do the same for Grundy but I don’t think he’s the ruck messiah that everyone craves . His last year at The pies before he got injured was ordinary to say the least. But a new environment were he would be the No1 ruck might help him turn his career around.
With the new Veterans list maybe Reid could be added to that or maybe Rampe so that gives us potentially another pick.
I think Cleary looks a great pick and will add something different to our midfield , imagine him and Sheldrick dishing it out to Gulden and Chad.
Whatever we do we just need to make sure there is $$ left for long term contracts for Gulden ,Chad and McDonald. Also Florent and Hayward in the short term

Trade him back to Port. A third-round pick could get the deal done. Ladhams was traded for a deal equivalent to pick 40.

We need Ladhams and i still think he can play.

The problem i have with Mckay is paying him enough to satisfy 1st rd compensation

Id happily go long term but he isnt worth more than 550 to 600k

To be fair, North Melbourne have a valid point regarding free agency compensation picks. They are flawed.

FA compensation picks are first round (after the team's first round pick), end of first round, second round and so on.

For a team finishing last, there is little difference between the end of first round pick and second round pick. If there are no other end of first round compensation picks, these are functionally the same except for the order of the picks.

Assume North Melbourne end up finishing last. A first-round compensation pick would be pick 2. An end of first round compensation pick would be pick 19 (North's second-round pick would be pick 20; Adelaide currently has this pick). A second-round compensation pick would be pick 20 (North's second-round pick would be pick 19). That's 17 draft places different versus one place. So it's not surprising that North are keen for a first round pick or a trade.

This is why I have been saying for some time that the end of first-round and end of second-round compensation picks are flawed. I've previously suggested the idea that these should be replaced by compensation picks that are half-way between where the first-round picks and second-round picks would be awarded. So on this formula, a bottom side's compensation picks would be picks 2, 11, 20, 29 and 38 (assuming no other picks). Every team's compensation picks would also be spaced out the same way, but the halfway picks would be one round later for teams in the top half of the ladder.

If this was the formula, I think North would consider pick 11 as acceptable. They would have 11 and 17 (Port's first-round pick) available to package up for a trade, and they could trade them for a top-5 pick.

The current system is designed to favour poorly performing clubs who get free agents poached from them.
So North losing McKay gets better compensation than say, Collingwood losing Moore.

I dont mind it. Free agency does, in general, allow successful clubs to plunder weaker clubs, and this does some small step to address that

I agree about not wanting to pay too much for McKay. He seems to always be injured.

That’s my query on McKay too. I think he can really play, but he is a bit injury prone - which makes the level of investment Norf need to get pick 2 a dubious call.

Whats with the headline "Melbourne in talks with 3 clubs for Grundy". Surely the protocol is, Grundy nominates a single club (eg Swans) and we screw melbourne on the deal.
                                Have I missed something?
